While wisely rated G for Gross ("Contains immature material not suitable for adults"), Andy Griffiths' very funny debut novel will almost certainly blow away--perhaps literally, stinkingly--anyone of any age who's ever suspected that their backside might be up to something.

Translated from the Australian (sold Down Under as "The Day My Bum Went Psycho"), this adventure begins with the nighttime flight of our 12-year-old protagonist Zach's pale little heinie and doesn't let up for over 200 pages--most of which are filled almost exclusively with the word "butt." At first, Zach believes his butt might be leading some sort of minor butt rebellion, but the plot quickly thickens to include a global army of feral butts, the "greatest buttcano in the history of the world," and a head-butt "rearrangement" conspiracy that goes all the way to the... um, bottom. Our well-meaning but naive hero Zach soon gets mixed up with the butt-fighting "B-team" (the Kicker, the Kisser, and the Smacker, who all "love the smell of freshly smacked butt in the morning!"), fires his very first 4502-LL ("The LL stood for Laxative Launcher"), learns how to "butt-hop" ("The average butt has enough gas to propel itself and a rider for twenty minutes...."), and goes on a long, wild chase involving cluster butts, buttcatchers, kamikaze butts, stinkants, and even the fearsome Stenchgantor, "the Great Unwiped Butt." (And that's not even counting all those seagoing butt piranhas and poopoises.)

Griffiths surely likes the cheap laughs and doesn't miss a single opportunity for buttly wordplay (from "high-frequency emissions" to the smell-ranking "Rectum scale"), but that doesn't make The Day My Butt Went Psycho any less clever--the fast-moving plot has as many double-crosses as double entendres, and Griffiths weaves in some pretty brilliant ideas. Who knew you could have a death throe scene between a butt and its owner? Also includes a snarky butt glossary in the book's... uh, rear. (Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes

Griffith's fun gross-out adventure novel follows Zack Freeman, who awakens to see his rear end leaping out the window to lead a bum rally. Zack's butt urges bums to "assume our rightful positions on top of the neck." Zack searches for the "one person who can stop [the plan]," the Bum Hunter, and in the process meets up with legendary bum fighters like the Kisser and the Smacker-plus the Bum Hunter's tough daughter, Eleanor. As the team tries to stop the bums from erupting a disgusting bumcano (hint: it's not filled with lava), they encounter a stink tornado, swimming poopoises, the Stenchgantor, "also known as the Great Unwiped Butt"-and a traitor in their midst. Though Zack finally tells his bum, "Well, maybe if I'd taken better care of you... you might not have gone psycho in the first place," kids will gleefully discover there's no great lesson learned here. Some of Griffith's details are hilarious (a fluffy pink toilet seat cover is the perfect tool for trapping bums, who "are powerless to resist them"), others plain disgusting (Zack and Eleanor hitch a ride on an exploding bum pimple), but young readers will likely get a kick out of it all (there's even a glossary included). Love It or Hate It, This Book Is About Butts.

It's interesting to look through the reader reviews for this book; I don't know that I've ever seen a book veer as wildly between 1 and 5 star reviews. The lower ratings often express dismay and outrage at the book's subject matter, which, given its title, may strike one as a bit silly.

"This book is about butts? What trash!"

Not only is this Australian book about butts (the title originally used "bum"), but the word "butt" is in virtually every sentence. If you or yours enjoy scatological Aussie humor, you'll love this. As a middle school teacher, I've seen this book in so many hands, I felt obligated to read it. I may have regretted my decision when the book's main character and his pal ride an exploding butt pimple, but I stuck in there.

So to summarize: The Day My Butt Went Psycho is funny, and it's about butts. Be warned.

All I can say is my 8y.o. son loves it...

My 8 y.o. son is not a big reader and trying to find books he actually wants to read is hard. Like a lot of boys his age he is (unfortunately) obsessed w/potty humor. I saw this book and knew he'd like it. Understatement. He can't wait to read it b/f bed and I've found him reading it on his own during the day. It's full of butt-humor that boys his age find hysterical. Went ahead and ordered the others in the series as well. One good thing seems to be that reading about it seems to have cut down on his need to potty talk all the time. Being a good reader is instrumental in their future academic success so I get him whatever will hold his interest. He finds the Frannie K. Stein books entertaining as well.

Not Funny to my 8yo son.

The title of this book was so exciting to my 8yo. He started reading it as soon as we received it. He quickly became bored of it. He tried picking it up three or four more times but couldn't bring himself to read it. He's all about crude humor but just didn't find it funny. He ended up giving it to a friend. For a frame of reference to his humor, he laughed out loud several times to the Judy Blume "Fudge" books.

Another favorite!

My 12 year old has enjoyed this entire series since 3rd grade. He is now in 7th grade but still loves to read the humorous saga. It is an easy quick read for him which is a nice break from the more age appropriate, school required novels.

Dan Gutman understands young reader’s humor and has created a fantastic book formula to draw in even the most reluctant of readers. The My Weird School series is perfect for students to practice their reading skills with its repetitive yet hysterical narrative and story lines. But don’t mention that part to your kiddos, they might run away in fear they could learn something. A must have collection for any grade school library or classroom!

Great Series of Books!

My daughter loves this series of book and even though she can plow through one of them in a day it is still a book that distracts her from TV, computer or video games. That is a plus in todays society. The content is decent for late second graders but I always would advise a parent to skim a book before handing it over to their child to read.

If you lack of self confidence or the conviction to stand your ground then this book is for you. It's focus is definitely as the title says, MAN UP! Many men mistake being an alpha with not feeling but they are wrong. The alpha has the confidence to feel deeply whilst still being connecting to his masculine power. This book does a great book of covering all the fundamentals. If you need to step into your manhood with power, then buy this book.

providing reassurances like a broken-record

Curiosity had me reading this book. The powerful, no-nonsense, no-excuses assertive style of writing peaked my interest in wanting to know more personally the difference between the Alpha & Beta male. This isn't just an informative read for males. I'm sure every female, at least once in her life, has fallen for the false confidence, the scripted lines, the staring eyes, the seeming, "I'll do whatever it takes to please you," to eventually find out the hard way the powerful, underlying insecurities and instabilities of the Beta male. Next thing you know, you're spending the majority of your time catering to these insecurities, providing reassurances like a broken-record, and reinforcing their fixated focus on self, so much so that you feel like nothing more than a pawn, and completely overwhelmed and suffocated. A lot of the characteristics of the Beta-male can also be said for the insecure female. Awareness is the first step toward empowerment, and this book doesn't soften the blow. It provides exactly what it promises. I am happy to have read this book, and recommend it for all and everyone who blame their failings on external things, as it will teach you how to take control of your own self and your own life and make your own success.

A Story Lovingly Told

In this book Anna Quindlen delivers a lovely story of strength, support, and love.
Late one night, a teenaged couple abandons their newborn baby at the garage door of "Blessings", an estate inhabited by the elderly Lydia Blessing and her young handyman, Skip Cuddy.....and thus set off a chain of events that will propel both of these characters on a journey of discovery.
Skip, who lives over the garage and finds the foundling, will discover unexpected depths of feelings for this little one, whom he names Faith. He also discovers the nurture of which he is capable--and what the tribulations of fatherhood can be. This baby gives Skip's life a structure and purpose that it never had before. Lydia discovers that perhaps doing what is expected is not always the "good" thing to do....and questions what the "right" thing to do really is. She has lived in the past for so long, thinking about her family's many secrets, but this baby brings her into the present with a welcome jolt.
Despite trying to keep Faith's presence a secret, Lydia finds out that Skip has taken on the role of "father" to this baby, and the three of them become an unlikely sort of family. Quindlen shows us how a family is not necessarily comprised of those related by blood, but can be a unit made up of people who need, support, and care for each other. Together, Skip and Lydia find unexpected joy in Faith and find resources within themselves of which they were unaware. These two characters, of such different backgrounds and ages, also allow the author to tell the same story in two very different ways.
Quindlen has written a richly descriptive and moving novel, one of redemption and personal growth, and about doing the right thing. Her observational skills, so evident in the columns she has written over the years, make us understand and care about these characters, their pasts, and how their lives affect others.
I loved the double meaning of the title,"Blessings"...for not only was it the name of a house, but blessings were what these characters bestowed on each other.
A wonderful reading experience that this reader will remember with great pleasure.

What A "Blessing" To Read!

This is such a beautiful story. I could not put this book down so I stayed up and read it from cover to cover.
The story begins with a baby being abandoned late one night by a teenage girl and the father of the baby. The baby is dressed in a flannel shirt with a hair clip on its umbilical cord and left by the garage in a cardboard box.
The box is then found by Skip, a house hand. Skip has never been around children much less a baby. He takes the newborn in as his own and the story begins. He becomes attached to the baby and raises it as his own... all the while keeping it a secret. We are then swept along as Skip learns to care for the baby and ends up dedicating his life to the baby. (I don't want to give up to much information on the baby.)
The name of the estate where the baby is left is called "Blessings" ... owned by an eighty-year-old wealthy woman named Lydia Blessings. As the story continues we learn the secrets of Lydia Blessings and her family ... AND, there are many secrets! The characters are richly written ... you will find yourself bonding with many of them as you learn their secrets. BUT, be prepared for some tears ... keep the Kleenex close at hand.
There are many "BLESSINGS" in this story. You will not be disappointed with this novel. It is a must read.

Nice, feel-goog story

A baby is abandonned by its teenage mother at the Blessings estate in a cardboard box. When found the next morning by Skip, the caretaker who has associated with the wrong crowd in the past, he decides to keep her.
Blessings is the story of how this child changes Skip's life, as well as that of old, bitter matriarch Mrs. Lydia Blessing, who surprises us by helping Skip keep the baby.
This slow-paced, descriptive novel uses flashbacks from Mrs. Blessing's life, allowing the reader to discover this woman little by little, from her childhood, to her brother Sunny, to her marriage and her relationship with her daughter.
This novel includes some unexpected twists that help to make this cast of wonderful characters oh so human.
I hope you enjoy this book as I did.

About the Author
Chantal Wright is Honorary Fellow of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at Durham University and Visiting Fellow of the School of Translation and Interpretation at the University of Ottawa. She studied at the University of Cambridge and the University of East Anglia in the UK, and previously taught at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the University of Alberta, and Mount Allison University. Her research interests focus on the theory and practice of literary translation, stylistics, and exophony. In 2012, her translation of Tzveta Sofronieva’s poetry collection, "A Hand Full of Water", won the inaugural Cliff Becker Book Prize in Translation. Chantal Wright has translated some of Germany’s best-known children’s authors including Milena Baisch, Zoran Drvenkar, and Cornelia Funke. In 2011, her translation of Andreas Steinhöfel’s "The Pasta Detectives" was shortlisted for the Marsh Award for Children’s Literature in the UK. From 2005 to 2008, Chantal Wright was the editor of "Transcript", a European Union funded, online review of international writing published by Literature Across Frontiers at the University of Aberystwyth in Wales.
