SIMPLY THE BEST!

As an Instructor of Hypnosis, I not only read this wonderful book, but it is also on my required reading list for my college students. Never before have I seen such a comprehensive text written on hypnotherapeutic practices that is so well written even one with no knowledge of Hypnotherapy can relate to it as well as understand the techniques. Hogan should be proud to accept his position beside such modern Hypnosis greats as such as Rossi, Cheek, and Erickson among others. The Time Track piece is simply amazing.

Basic and Advanced Hypnosis

The New Hypnotherapy Handbook was one of my textbooks for Kevin Hogan's hypnosis certification training. I particularly liked this book because it offers a model of hypnotherapy, a number of useful scripts, and solutions to dealing with difficult problems in hypnosis.
First, the model. CARPETS is Hogan's anacronym for Case Analysis, Regression, Parts/Ego State, Time Track Therapy and Suggestive Therapeutics. The highlight of the model is the Time Track Component. Never have I seen such a beautiful piece of work in the field of hypnosis. What you learn is how to weave a clients past and future positive resources into their present day state of mind. This modality alone is worth the ... price of the book.
The discussion of ethical issues, case analysis and legal issues is first rate. The details of regression are sketchy at first but made clear later in the book when his co-authors give verbatim transcripts of their session work. The ego state therapy is better described in Ego States by Watkins, but the treatment is sufficient. The specialty chapters on Emergency Hypnosis, Past Life Regression and even UFO abductions are tantalizing and always prefaced with cautions of ethical use and careful handling of the client.
This book started off a bit clumsily and then by Chapter Two it was clear it was one of the finest books on hypnosis I have read.
The New Hypnotherapy Handbook is a wonderful book for the advanced beginner and the seasoned practitioner.

If you are a hypnotherapist who wants to really help people create permanent change this book is a must - period.
I own and have read, highlighted and reread the original Hypnotherapy Handbook. The pages are tattered because the concepts keep displaying deeper levels of understanding each time I read it.
Wow, despite that, I have gleamed even more insights from reading this one.
As I said above, if you want to really help people, buy and study this book.

However the speed of change in markets, technology and communication combined with the diverse sources of risk, means that for risk management to be effective, it has to be methodical and broad in its approach. Additionally it has to be ingrained in the business psyche, the ‘normal way of doing things’.

Simple Tools and Techniques for Enterprise Risk Management builds from the bottom up to provide a readily understood methodical approach to risk management, while at the same time describing the diverse sources of risk, to encourage a broad approach. A Summary of the Current Techniques

It is not generally considered that business, all business operates in an element of risk. Everything from the price of supplies to Government actions involve risk. Often this risk is absolutely impossible to predict, i.e. those who went to work at the top of the World Trade Center one September morning. And as a result the analysis of risk in ventures has taken on great urgency.

Commensurate with this has been the development of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) tools to provide a framework for managing company-wide risk. It begins with overall corporate governance which establishes guidelines for the company to operate. Various phases within the process then include such activities as identifying, evaluating, and controlling risk within those guidelines.

The book is written from a worldwide basis and discusses recent changes in various countries such as the U.K., U.S.A. and Canada. These changes brought about by spectacular busines failures such as Enron, WorldCom, and the resultant troubles of companies such as Arthur Anderson have created an environment where the executive is taking a much greater interest in the management of the company as his risk of prison increases.

Dr. Chapman has a long history of working in the risk management area, including getting his Ph.D. in that area.

It's a good book

I needed to get this book for a course I'm taking, and I have to say it is really well written. Can't say it's on my favorite subject, but it's light enough that I can read it without feeling a headache afterwards. I can't think of any reason why anyone would want this expensive book if they didn't have to buy it. It makes this review kind of moot, doesn't it? I mean, you're looking at this book probably because it is required for your sociology course or something. You have no choice but to buy it. If you're one of the few who wants it for fun, well, it's a fine book. Enjoy.

About the Author
Montague Rhodes James (1862–1936) is one of the originators and most influential writers of supernatural fiction. Among his many honors was the Order of Merit, bestowed upon him by King George V in 1930.

S. T. Joshi is a freelance writer and editor. He has edited Penguin Classics editions of H. P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories (1999), and The Thing on the Doorstep and Other Weird Stories (2001), as well as Algernon Blackwood’s Ancient Sorceries and Other Strange Stories (2002). Among his critical and biographical studies are The Weird Tale (1990), Lord Dunsany: Master of the Anglo-Irish Imagination (1995), H. P. Lovecraft: A Life (1996), and The Modern Weird Tale (2001). He has also edited works by Ambrose Bierce, Arthur Machen, and H. L. Mencken, and is compiling a three-volume Encyclopedia of Supernatural Literature. He lives with his wife in Seattle, Washington.

Not as Comprehensive as the Oxford World Classics _Casting The Runes_

I realize that no one will probably put out a book to rival the amazing and beautiful _A Pleasing Terror_ put out by Ash-Tree Press several years ago, but Amazon's description of _Count Magnus and Other Ghost Stories : The Complete Ghost Stories of M. R. James, Volume 1_ (Penguin Classics) made it out to sound much better than it actually is, since it was listed at being 400 pages long, but is in reality a far slimmer tome of 288 pages. Very disappointing.

The book does have a nice sized font, but suffers from a thin cover (albeit with a great cover illustration), and a bit floppy overall.

The 15 stories included are among the best ghost stories ever written. But with so many book containing the works of M. R. James, I try to be a bit more discerning. This edition is brief and of decent publishing standards.

Stories Awesome: Annotation Lame!

The stories of Mr. James are above reproach; unique in English literature for being subtle and creepy at the same time and shaped by James' knowledge of medieval history, English history, and the occult. The question for the reader is whether they want to pony up [...] for the Penguin annotated editions of James' tales, as the James repertoire is in the public domain and you could read many of these stories for free on the internet and / or get a [...] copy of the "Collected Ghost Stories" from Wordsworth Press and get 30 out of 33 of the stories featured in the two combined Penguin volumes. So the question then is are Joshi's notes and intros worth about [...]?

S.T. Joshi is an immensely gifted editor and critic. His studies of the "Weird Tale" are modern classics in the field, and the immense work he has put into his Lovecraft bio and his annotated Lovecraft volumes are a paradigm. There is no doubt that if Mr. Joshi put the full focus of his attention on working with James' material that he could have easily justified the purchase price for these books. Unfortunately, Joshi, for whatever reasons, just went through the motions here and produced a fairly pedestrian work of annotation and criticism to accompany the text.

Joshi's annotated Lovecraft or annotated Blackwood (also available from Penguin) are superb works of annotation - each story has copious notes explaining themes and background of the work at hand. In approaching James though, Joshi appears dutiful at best or even bored. Many tales here have less than half a dozen bland notes, and many of the notes are nothing more than scutwork, translations and nutshell bios of historical figure mentioned.

This would be fine if James needed no annotation. (But then why buy these books at all?) The true issue is that James' work would indeed benefit from some first grade notes. For instance "The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral" is a story involving an ambitious clergyman who schemes to murder his inconvenient predecessor who is holding him from a promotion. The career of the sinister cleric has many subtle details that point up James' low opinion of him based on his theology and clerical administration policies.

For a modern reader who is not fully aware of Episcopalian intra-denominational quarrels in the late 19th Century, knowing this info will add a new level of depth and interest to the story. Instead, Joshi tells us none of this and simply translates a few Latin phrases and fleshes out a few Biblical citations, something the ordinary reader with internet access could do on their own with a [...] copy of the stories. In comparison, Joshi's notes in his annotated Lovecraft for "Herbert West Reanimator" (one of the slightest and most pulpy of fictions in the HPL body of work) are far more detailed, engaging, and affectionate.

Now you might say "well who cares about Episcopalian church governance squabbles of the 19th Century?" and indeed the Barchester story works very well even if the reader knows none of the "extrinsic" detail. But yet the entire point of an annotated edition is to add maximum depth and detail to a story for those interested in pursuing such a level of analysis. To provide a minimalist annotation defeats the entire purpose of the endeavor, as the reader may be better served by dispensing with the slight commentary offered and simply reading the work in question cheaply or for free while doing their own cursory research as needed for historical figures, translations, etc.

The problem may be that Joshi is well-known for his postulate that a Christian perspective is incompatible with effective horror writing. Joshi is a rather strident atheist and feels that atheism and similar godless perspective make for the most creative and interesting horror. I see his point, but yet the existence of effective horror by pious men like Hawthorne and Montague Rhodes James acts as a counterpoint to Joshi's thesis. This is not to say that Joshi sets out to sabotage James with lame notes - rather it perhaps shows why Joshi viewed this particular exercise as a bore and a task rather than a pleasure.

I do not wish to psychoanalyze the editor too much; my theory above may be entirely wrong. However, the heart of the matter is that if we compare Joshi's notes and analyses on the stories of the pantheistic Blackwood, the existensialist Lovecraft, or the atheist Ligotti, we see that he has done a much better job than here. Maybe this is due to the fact that he finds these others more personally simpatico, or perhaps he simply finds detailed textual analysis of James to be uninteresting.

In any case, the ultimate answer to the question of whether a reader should purchase these two volumes of James' ghost stories is probably not. The much cheaper Wordsworth edition (though less aesthetically pleasing) will offer all the pleasures of the original text (or 90% of them anyway), the somewhat cheaper Oxford World Classics Edition though offering only 20 or so tales has a far better intro and notes by Michael Cox, and for the ultimate discount, most of these tales are in the public domain and can be tracked down and read for free over the internet. Joshi, though ordinarily adding enough value to an annotated edition to justify a higher price, has fallen down on the job here and given us a bare-bones minimal effort annotation effort.

Academic and Exciting Ghost Stories

M.R. James' scholarship in the areas of medieval manuscripts and church history manifest themselves in appreciable ways throughout his many stories. The stories range from definitively supernatural (Canon Alberic's Scrap-Book) to those that really allow you to question the reality of the events described ("'Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You My Lad'"). James has a wonderful grasp of just how much background story is necessary to create story and character depth, while at the same time establishing a mood conducive to truly spooky and chilling revelations.

Jame's training and knowledge allow him to tap into real history and geography, as well as invent things which seem utterly plausible - the Penguin notes are helpful in circumventing extensive research to determine whether a place is real or not, and what historical relevance there might be for the story. However, those not interested in this may grow tired of the notes and those pursuing studies will find the recommended reading of far more pertinence.

This is a nice, portable introduction to M.R. James' ghost stories and is highly recommended to those that are interested in the gothic and to anyone who enjoys a good short story.

Man, There's Some Women for You

What an intriguing collection of Biblical figures -- and non-figures. Sharer Robertson brings refreshing insight into some familiar stories by positing the thoughts and feelings of those often overlooked -- the women who witnessed the ministries of Moses and David and Peter and, of course, Jesus.

The "non-"figures are often the most interesting -- unlike Hannah or Tabitha or Mary, who actually existed, telling a tale from the perspective of Reuben's daughter or Andrew's cousin brings new sensibilities into the old stories.

I especially enjoyed the tale of King David's Auntie -- as they say, she was a character, definitely not afraid to say what she thought. And I think the rich humanness of these women - even some who are only characters in a parable (the Foolish Bridesmaid, the Persistent Widow) - makes them relate easily to today's hearer.

And I do think these are best heard aloud. There is something about hearing them voiced by someone who's taken the time to absorb the character that will best convey the meaning. Sharer Robertson's "Making It Play" section before each piece will be particularly helpful with that -- she offers useful suggestions for 'getting into the skin' of the character she's presenting.

Ah . . my only regret is that I'm not woman enough to do these protrayals myself!

Connections

The abilbity to put real, human characteristics to these women allows the listner, or reader, to connect with them. By adding this depth of personal traits make these women come alive and tell their stories. Sharer Robertson has created the backgrounds of women to enhance the tradtional Biblical stories and make them more meaningful to modern listners. Supplying dramatic story telling techniques also enchances the use of these monologues. What a wonderful way to bring the Bible to life! The continuity of emotions, spirit and humanitiy is bridged through these women's stories.

Read the Monologues aloud to others or Memorize and perform them - they are everlasting and very real

I've known and admired Jacki for many years, just haven't seen her in a long time. I really miss her. This is the second "Women in the Wings" I've purchased. She is extremely talented with words as well as musical notes. Her monologues touch the heart of what is happening in each of these 20 woman's world in a way not unlike women today, not unlike me. I plan to use these monologues often and recommend them readily for performances. The words, whether humorous or serious take the audience deep into these women's lives to share their loves, hopes and realities. Jacki and her magical talent caused a startling influence on my life. Her love, joy and belief enabled me to come out from the wings and live an incredible adventure in the Kingdom of God. The world of music at your fingertips, with 2 CDs

This is a beautiful book. Anyone who wants to learn more about music -- its notation, its instrumentation, its history, how and why it moves us -- will enjoy this book immensely. It discusses music theory in understandable terms, covering rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, timbre, and organization. The instruments of the classical orchestra are all explained, as are folk instruments. In fact, folk music from around the world is discussed as a prelude to the main sections on the so-called "art music" of Europe and America. I especially liked the Listening Guides. They correspond to tracks on the two CDs that come with the book. The author explains what's going on at each important part of a piece of music, with timings provided so you can follow along, and even provides musical notation showing important themes. I don't read music, but I enjoyed being able to see the score of a familiar strain and following along with the Listening Guide to better understand what the music was about. There are also biographies of each important composer and beautiful full-color reproductions of art from the period being discussed. The book also includes an appendix about musical notation (which if I had studied better would probably give me musical literacy). It also has a very useful glossary and index. This book is obviously a college textbook, but anyone who wants to increase his or her understanding and appreciation of the world music will benefit from reading it.

Don't Miss It

Unquestionably the most understandable,interesting,even entertaining text for introduction to music courses. It would also be an excellent gift for anyone wanting to know more about classical, ethnic and contemporary music. The CD ROMs add immeasurably to the book, providing graphic illustrations of the ideas in the text. An outstanding book.

This book is excellent for learning the history of music. Each period of music such as Classical, Baroque, and Modern are explained in great detail. Also, the text is very readable and has many pictures and facts about famous composers. It explains the key definitions clearly and helps you understand each concept in a way where most people who put the time into it can understand it.
