The term "statistical literacy" is used to emphasize that the purpose of the school curriculum should not be to turn out statisticians but to prepare statistically literate school graduates who are prepared to participate in social decision making. Based on ten years of research--with reference to other significant research as appropriate--the book looks at students' thinking in relation to tasks based on sampling, graphical representations, averages, chance, beginning inference, and variation, which are essential to later work in formal statistics. For those students who do not proceed to formal study, as well as those who do, these concepts provide a basis for decision making or questioning when presented with claims based on data in societal settings.

Statistical Literacy at School: Growth and Goals:

Six specific topics in Statistics Education

This book is an excellent resource for teachers, curriculum planners, textbook writers, and researchers. It is the result of many years of research into the development of students' understanding of statistics during, but not limited to, the compulsory years of schooling. It is clearly structured and well written, with many examples of tasks and student work on those tasks, and what this reveals about students' progress.

The author recognises the goals concerning statistics in the school curriculum: to prepare all students to participate in decision making based on data and to prepare some students for further study in statistics. The primary purpose of the book is to contribute to the first of these goals and uses the term statistical literacy in this context. Three tiers of statistical literacy are defined and used as reference points throughout the book. They are summarised here from pages 15-16, and constitute aims for statistical education.
* First tier: the development of appropriate terminology to be used for statistical decision-making.
* Second tier (with an obvious overlapping with literacy skills): an understanding of probabilistic and statistical language and concepts when they are embedded in the context of wider social discussion.
* Third tier: the ability and confidence to challenge statements that are made without proper statistical foundation.

The book is structured around six specific topics in statistics that are found within the "chance and data" strand of the mathematics curricula of most western countries. These are sampling, graphs, average, chance, beginning inferences, and variation. A chapter is devoted to each of these in turn, beginning with an introduction to the term and some historical insights about prior research into student understanding. Next, the results of appropriate research from publications by Jane Watson and collaborators are carefully presented in the form of analyses of student answers to open-ended tasks, and interviews. The SOLO taxonomy (Biggs, 1982) is used to analyse these responses and they are discussed in order of increasing sophistication and relevance to the task. Readers unfamiliar with the SOLO model are well catered for by the introduction and examples in Chapter 1. Each chapter ends with a section headed "Implications and recommendations". Explicit suggestions for classroom activities and discussions will be found here, based on the tiers of statistical literacy.

One of the many useful insights in the chapter on graphs is a discussion about the source of possible confusion inherent in boxplots (box and whisker plots), due to the inverse relationship between the sizes of the boxes and the density of the data points that they represent. A sensible way to introduce box plots is via the stacked dot plot, so that you can see that the smaller the box (or half a box if we are talking about a quartile), the more densely packed it is.

I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone interested in the teaching and learning of statistics. It is useful for teachers of senior years as well, since it describes the kinds of understandings that students may or may not possess as they begin more formal studies in statistics. As an example of summarising and applying years of careful research to make recommendations for teaching and curriculum planning it is an outstanding contribution.

Brislin makes it easy

Understanding Culture's Influence (2nd edition) has been my "foundation" book for a college course entitled Diversity In the Workplace.
Dr. Brislin uses an easy to follow format which is loaded with excellent analogies, making complex topics understandable.

My only negative comment would be for the publisher. As this book is used as a text, the selection of print paper was poor. Highlighters bleed through from one page to the next which makes spotting important information difficult on review.

Much the same

I felt like I was somewhat forced to read the second book. The whole first book lead up to an escape which stopped right when they got started. The second book made me angry because I like to choose if I read a book, not feel obligated because I committed so much time to the first one. This book was much the same as the first. You did learn a few things but it wasn't enough to make me rush out to buy the third. I felt like it was dragging too much and it was just bad news followed by bad news. It didn't leave me with any hope they would ever get out or any hope that the series would end any time soon so I wasn't inclined to keep going with it in case I ended up having to read another five books on it.

Akroyd has been removed by Yahweh. She has intentional leaving quotations off the work to make people believe she wrote it. She's no longer part of the holy family. Other things she was ousted, but this pertains the book she claimed to authored.

nothing christian about this book

In this age we are constantly fighting against the teachings of things that "itches the ears" (2 Tim 4:3-4). The Chosen is a book that claims to be christian yet a majority of its claims go directly against God's word. Diana Akroyd, the chosen has personal visits and additional revelations of truth from angels. I think she has been visited but not from angels of God. She totally discounts the possibility, and the warnings of many scriptures, that these visits could be from those pretending to be angels of light. The bible warns that even the elect will be deceived - what greater indication that one is a false teacher is that they say they are never wrong, just like Diana does. The main problem is that she will not take biblical correction or reproof (which the bible commands). She wont even discuss or dispute her "out of context" scripture usage. Diana states that its all real and her experiences are proof that everything is from God and therefore true. Unfortunately the bible says the heart is deceitfully wicked and not to be trusted. Anyway take a look at just some of the claims that Diana makes. I went over her website and there is just too much false teaching. They include...

1. Angels will kill people here on earth after the rapture = no biblical support

2. Claims there is no one Holy Ghost, but multiple holy ghosts = heresy

3. Claims that in the next 2 years the earth will be bankrupt = if this doesnt come to pass she is a false prophet

4. "We do not debate the Scriptures" = the bible says the opposite, be like the Bereans; besides the bible says its useful for correcting and reproof but the author chooses not to heed this command

5. Says she doesnt want to sell the book for money but she has no choice - YES YOU DO, PUT IT INTO PDF FORMATE AND GIVE IT AWAY!

6. Claims to have 70 spirit guides surrounding her at all times - no scripture says christians are to have spirit guides

7. Claims that she is a "Chosen" one to disseminate truth and that the "Messenger" only comes around every generation = there is no office, agent or duty like this seen in the bible (can you say FALSE TEACHING?)

8. her angel pictures look like they are made with KY Petroleum Jelly - i would make a recreation on my window but it would be a waste of good PJ and its hard to clean up.

The author says she was into Psychics, Astrology, Nostradomus, Palm Reading, Past Lives and Past Life Regression, Soul Mates, Star Seeds, Witchcraft, Tarot Cards, Tea Leafs, Numerology, The Bible Code, Buddhism, Wicca, Paganism, demonology and more, but its funny how there is no evidence of any gospel message that includes the sin, repentance, confession or believing in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Heck the author never says that she repented of any of her past actions in the occult even tho almost all of her experiences are denounced in the bible as witchcraft, divination and idolatry against God). The bible never says that personal experience trumps the doctrines and teachings found in the bible. Oh well I wish there was truth in advertising because this is not a Christian book at all.

My hopes are that you stick to God's word, examine yourself daily and search the scriptures like the Bereans in order to stay on the narrow path of salvation, and to help others that wander off on the road that leads to destruction. Remember last of all the bible says...

"I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-- not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed."

Smart and Witty with New and Familiar Faces from the Series

"Becoming Forever" is the second installment in the Waking Forever Series. Though "Becoming" follows a new protagonist, Ash, who has the wit and determination standard to a McVea lead character, the homicide detective has nerves of steel that make her even more endearing. The supporting characters are great comic relief, especially Ash's best friend Alan. (I love Alan!) There is even a brief love triangle between Ash and two beautiful women: Emma the Medical Examiner and Lara the blind date. The sexual tension is on the rise.
But perhaps the most interesting feature of McVea's new novel is the reintroduction of familiar faces and events. The story starts with the murder of Paul Garrett from "Waking Forever," something followers of the series know all too well. As a result, we have a brief interaction with Sarah and Rachel, and of course, Ela. Overall, an engaging and quick read, ending on a cliffhanger that leaves me excited for the last installment in the Waking Series!

A Gem Among Stones

Again, I was surprised to see how little this book actually cost. I had barely finished with "Waking Forever" when I bought this. I had just begun to read the teaser for it at the end of WF and read Ashley Haines' name. From the moment I read her name and description in WF I hoped that she would be brought back.

Now here she is again and we get to learn more about her back story and how she became involved in WF. I am truly excited about what this book has brought to the table in the way of the supernatural beings. Of course we had learned of the Lycans from Rachel in WF, but getting a better peek into their world in this installment has been great.

I don't want to give away any spoilers, but the challenges that face the women in this book are what I would call believable in the world the story has created, and I couldn't help but cheer and laugh out loud at the 'shifting' scene near the end of the book. Heather McVea must have a wonderful imagination and I can't wait to see what she dreams up for the next book in this series.
The way this one ended...I'm waiting with bated breath for August.

Original and wonderful

I had read the first book in this series, Waking Forever, and really liked it. The characters were interesting and the plot flowed well. I hesitated for a second to buy Becoming Forever because of a review about it being too much like the first book, and I’ve definitely had issues with that in books by other authors.
I’m glad I went ahead with the purchase!
Okay, so some key story points DO overlap between the two books in the series, but it’s important that they do! (I don’t want to say too much about that and spoil the story.) And Becoming Forever is a fantastic story on its own. The two protagonists are into each other right away, so there is not the uncertainty of Is she gay? Or isn’t she? thing that drove part of the first book. That means we can go straight into the action of the second book.A lot more is happening in Becoming Forever - I’ll just say, lycans and shifters! - and the author moves you through the book seamlessly, all the way up to the cliffhanger ending. There’s more humor in this book, too (wait for the super funny scene involving a German Shepherd.) I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
