About the Author
Mark F. Beck has been a massage therapist since 1975 and a massage educator for over 20 years. He has served as a school director and was active in the National Massage School Association (AMTA Council of Schools). He has held several offices in state and national professional associations. Mr. Beck was the owner/director/instructor of Magic Valley Massotherapy Institute from 1980 to 1990 and is currently the owner/director of Cooperative Training Systems (1996 - present). He is recognized as one of the original "thought leaders" in massage education and is the creator/author of Structural Muscular Balancing.

Great Starter Book

This is a great book for the massage therapy student. Its filled with all the information you will need to begin your education, and a great reference source after you are practising. I especially appreciated the information about business.

Expensive, but there really is no substitute in terms of its scope

Though it has a hefty price tag, this book remains THE CLASSIC for beginning students of professional massage and bodywork. And although I've been a certified therapist since 1991, I still keep the book on my reference shelf (several editions, actually).

So if this text is required for your classes, grit your teeth and buy it; the scope of material should continue to serve you long after graduation.

Disappointed

Compared to the other reviews I am very disappointed with this book. It does cover a wide range of information necessary to become a good massage therapist, including anatomy, physiology, microbiology, massage techniques, history, business practices & ethics, etc. However, I am very dissatisfied with the accuracy and organization of information. Despite a 4.0 in college Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Pathophysiology, Allied Health Chemistry, etc., I found the information presented within the text challenging to follow in some sections. The presentation of information lacked clarity. The diagrams and pictures were confusing due to several errors or mislabeling, lack of sufficient explanation within the text, and/or incongruence between instructions in the text and what the pictures presented. I also found it very hard to complete sections of the handbook because the information was not presented in the textbook. I have chosen to look for another book that presents information clearly and accurately.

Great for Advanced or Novice in Real Estate - Has it All.

This book is very comprehensive, yet easy to read. This book has it all, buying, selling, financing, forecast trending, foreclosures and a detailed method making money in the current market cycle.The book covers market trends, historicals and gives you 7 years worth of future projections in just about every area imagineable.

I own two properties (my home and an tri-plex), one of which I have been trying to sell, without any success. My biggest challenge presently is to sell my home and figure out if I should buy a new one or rent. After reading this material I have a lot more confidence that renting would be a bad idea. Meanwhile the author gave me a bunch of creative ways to expedite the sale my property. One of my concerns was that once I sell it, lenders will likely make it difficult for me to get financing for my next home. Again Ross detailed how to use other sources for financing, specifically in Chapter 6. This is a great book for answering the what type, where, and how much you spend on any property, even when the market is in a difficult period. The book has so much information that it is next to impossible to just read it once, or explain it in this review. It is a good book for the experienced investor who wants to make a lot of money in this real estate market, but also from my first read it was written simple enough to benefit any first time home buyer. It has a lot of complex calculators and algorithms for measuring the quality of a property, but then the author gives you free access to web sites so that you do not have to do anything manually. I would recommend this to just about all levels, novice or advanced, real estate buyers or sellers.

Ross Is Boss

Ed is best read.

Simply put, Ed Ross is real about real estate.

Look at his record: has owned over 200 properties and has custom-built, renovated and personally rented more than 100 dwellings and office buildings. And that's just data on the jacket.

The information on the 230 pages builds his case -- that you can make serious money. Even in this flopping housing market.

As Ed writes, it's all about doing your homework. With his textbook.

Ross spells it out clearly: 65% of our country will stall on the housing front until 2013. That's in keeping with his cyclical call of 2006 -- that we're in for seven years of drought.

Still, that leaves 35% in for rain. So natch he points to the Pacific Northwest for a floating housing market. In his Top 10 U.S. Cities section, Bellingham, Wash., comes out No. 1 and Bend, Ore., No. 2.

Why Bellingham? Says Ross: It's between two heavyweights in Seattle and Vancouver, directly in line of residential migration growth. Add the sharing of those two cultural meccas, thriving biz and Northwest lifestyle, and the sum question follows: What's not to like?

I edited Ed Ross' previous book, "The Spill Zone." The man knows real estate. Most of us don't. So ya gonna call? The Boss: Ross.

Technical and thorough

If your intent is to create music *by synthesizing the tones with a computer*, with a program such as Csound, this book is invaluable. It is *not about sequencing*, looping, controlling synthesizers or samplers with MIDI, etc. That said, the serious treatment of various types of sound synthesis is more than adequately technical, with lots of flowcharts, diagrams and a little algebra. The flowcharts illustrate generically how sounds can be synthesized, without getting into the specifics of particular programs. You must be able to leap the gap between the concept and the realization in a particular computer music program. Other chapters nicely introduce psychoacoustics, fundamentals of digital audio and the use of sound processing methodology. Warning: For a person with little technical (engineering-type) background, the book will be tough going in places, possibly overwhelming. It is not an introductory-level text.

should have been my first book

i've been making computer music with supercollider and before that
with a commercial graphical patch up package for several years now,
and i wish that this had been the first book i had read.
the first book i did in fact read was roads' 'computer music tutorial',
which is a great book which i also highly recommend, but is more of
a reference than a tutorial, both in its layout and style. the dodge/jerse book
is so clearly and pedagogically written, that even though i already knew
a great deal of the material, it solidified quite a lot of it into place for me.
the thing i liked best about it is that the authors invariably direct you
to compositions made using the methods just described. in other words
the methods are not just described in a vacuum.
expect to learn from this book the basics of acoustics and psychoacoustics,
digital audio and sampling theory, and a slew of sound synthesis techniques,
as well as about composition.
who should buy this:
the serious computer music student, who does not necessarily have any
experience yet in computer music, but who is not afraid of some hard study.
the computer musician using either a graphical patch up system ( max/msp, reaktor, pd etc... )
or using some Music-N derived language (supercollider, csound) would both benefit tremendously
from a thorough study of the contents of this book.
the mathematics level required for this book is not high. your algebra should be strong
with a solid understanding of exponents and logarithms, and some basic trig wouldn't
hurt either.
a note about the C++ source code. first off if you don't program, there is nothing to be scared
of, the source only appears in the chapter on composition, and if you do program in C but not C++,
then you should know that you will be fine, because the code snippets are effectively written in C.
aparantly the first edition included fortran code for ugens and was quite a different book. if you want a book on ugen internals, you won't find it in this second edition, but Moore's is terrific, 'Elements of Computer Music'.

Excellent first book on computer music

This is a great first book on computer music for anyone who already has some training in music theory and computers. By "music theory" I simply mean that you should be able to read and write music and understand its terminology. By having knowledge of computers, if you have had any college course equivalent of "Introduction to Computer Technology" or equivalent work experience, then you qualify. I discuss the contents of this book in the context of its table of contents:

Chapter one is a broad overview and introduction to computer music and its components - operating systems, block diagrams, software, and the use of a computer in computer music.

Chapter two is a very basic introduction to acoustics and psychoacoustics in music. It presents the basic measurements of acoustics, describes the transducer mechanism of the human ear, and then discusses the psychoacoustic response of pitch, loudness, duration, and timbre.

Chapter three, "Fundamentals of Digital Audio", discusses the process of converting a signal between its analog and digital forms. This includes the restrictions, errors, and limitations imposed by the numerical representation of an audio signal. Finally, the chapter addresses the issues raised by the speed at which digital audio can be synthesized or processed. This last issue is a moving target and has changed considerably since this book was published.

Chapter four, "Synthesis Fundamentals", begins with the fundamentals of signal generation and presents techniques of additive synthesis, modulation, and noise generation. Several example computer instrument designs are shown along with examples of composition. This chapter is very important because it introduces the building blocks of synthesis - the oscillator, unit generator, etc.

Chapter five, " Synthesis Using Distortion Techniques", concentrates on frequency modulation and nonlinear waveshaping. The chapter concludes with three examples of synthesis methods that explicitly use discrete summation formulas.

Chapter six, "Subtractive Synthesis", is about creating musical tones out of complex sources by sculpting away selected portions of the spectrum of the source. Filtering is discussed at length, and musical examples are provided to show the design considerations for computer instruments with noise and periodic sources. Several examples from musical literature are given. The chapter ends with a technical description of digital filtering and some filter recipes.

Chapter seven, "Analysis-Based Synthesis Techniques", discusses techniques such as the short-term Fourier transform and wavelet methods and also discusses limitations. The operation and application of the phase vocoder is presented.

Chapter eight, "Granular Synthesis", is a very brief discussion of a complex synthesis technique whose name was coined by Xenakis, who detailed an extensive theory of grain selection in his writings. If you want to implement this technique you should read Xenakis' work on the subject plus there are some applicable articles in "The Computer Music Tutorial".

Chapter nine, "Physical Modeling", is also a very slim chapter on a very complex subject. It talks in very high level terms about approaches, excitation for physical models, waveguide filters, the physical model of the vocal tract at a block diagram level, and the use of mechanical models. The authors rightly refer the reader who wants details to "The Physics of Musical Instruments" by Fletcher and Rossing. Another and more recent work on the subject published after this book is Perry Cook's "Real Sound Synthesis for Interactive Applications".

Chapter 10, "Reverberation, Auditory Localization, and Other Sound-Processing Techniques", talks about various techniques that have to do with sound reflection, sound placement, and sound motion. This book has more implementation details than the previous two chapters had.

Chapter 11, "Composition with Computers", examines the techniques of using the computer for both random and deterministic operations to produce a composition. There are examples of actual compositions shown to help the reader develop a sense of the possibilities that are achievable with computer-aided composition. This is a chapter where musical literacy is necessary. There is also some C-code present, but it is well commented and should be somewhat legible even to the layman.

Chapter 12, "Real-Time Performance of Computer Music", presents various modes of computer music performance and some of the many devices that can be used to change the actions of a performer into musical information. Methods of transmitting information between pieces of computer equipment are discussed as well as the use of a computer to respond musically to the sound from a live performer. There is a discussion of MIDI in this chapter that may be inadequate to some readers. I suggest the latest edition of "MIDI Power" for those readers. Also, there is some discussion here about the speed of computer equipment that is no longer relevant given the date of publication.

In spite of the fact that it is nine years old, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in computer music. With the exception of a few paragraphs on computer technology, the entire book is still relevant, and it introduces all of the terminology that anybody interested in this subject must know. Also it is a well written and well illustrated book that reads easily.

Hysterical! A fun read!

This book is really fun! A great book to gift to a friend. It's well written, clever and surprisingly chock full of fact.

It's also a good one to read on the bus, when you want the seat next to you to stay open and untaken. Especially if you read it at night, looking shifty and sweaty, with some claw marks put in the cover.

If You've Just Been Bitten, You Need to Get a Copy of This Before Your First Moons

Many people who suddenly are infected by the medical condition known as lycanthropy according to this book die before during their first transformation into a werewolf. The Werewolf's Guide to Life is just what the title suggests, a handy guide that tells you, the recently bitten one, what is about to happen to your body, how when you do transform into a werewolf you won't be able to control yourself from ripping apart any human in your vicinity, and the guide will stress over and over again how important it is that you restrain yourself properly when the next "moon set" occurs. Also importantly that you restrain yourself in a way that will enable you to get yourself out when your full human intelligence returns after you returned to your normal human form. Handily at the back of the book is a nice appendix that tells you every date those three moons will occur until December 2011. Not sure if the publishers will release an updated version for the years after but if not that appendix info will be a bit dated if your reading this review after 2011.

This book dispels the myths and wrongful assumptions that are out there about werewolves. If you've just been bitten you need to read this book. I had never even thought about how still wearing a wedding ring would mean the loss of a finger as the hand expanded cutting off circulation to the finger. Likewise don't make the restraints you are using to secure yourself so as not to wipe out innocent humans to tight for similar reasons. There's tons of information in this manual that you just probably have won't have thought of before it's too late.

There's also information on how to deal with fur chasers (those who want to be bitten by you), werewolf hunters (those who wish to kill you simply because you are a werewolf), where to buy your restraint system materials, where to build it, places you can secure yourself in an emergency, what to do if you got loose during your transformation and killed, the four types of werewolf bodies out there and basically how to live as normal a life as possible with the lycanthropy condition.

This is no boring book of rules or a you won't want to finish how to manual. It is quite entertaining and even if you haven't been bitten yourself quite informative on just learning about lycanthropy and the burdens your friends who may well be transforming into werewolves during every full moon have to deal with. Like learning first aid, this book is worth reading before you're bitten so on the off chance you are, you'll know what to do. Hopefully I'll never need this advice but it's good to know if I am I will know what to do.

Furthering your situation

Similar in fashion to The Zen of Zombie and The Vampire Survival Guide, this handbook for the newly bitten werewolf shows you how to handle your transformations, new life, and cravings without hurting anyone. While the book on the whole was mildly entertaining and easy to read, all it really presents is a repetitive reminder on chaining yourself up in a saferoom for three nights a month (your moons). It covers concepts like your different stages you will encounter, longevity, how to feed, who to tell your secret, where to live, and avoiding doctors but always comes back around to securing yourself for those nights. You quickly grow tired of it. There's even mini-sidebars on real people that were purportedly werewolves, at least in the authors' presentation. I will say my teenage son read it after me and he laughed constantly. He's not a bookreader but he finished this in two days so it really interested him. The books not bad but it is far from great. Don't get me wrong, if you like these types of humor, tongue-in-cheek guidebooks, it is certainly worth adding to your collection.
