As good as it gets

I had the fortune, and sometimes misfortune, to read a fair number of textbooks. All of them did promise to teach, though some proofed rather very disappointing on closer inspection.
This book on the other hand most certainly holds everything one can expect.
The book is divided into four parts: first, there is a small introction into the basics of astronomy, followed by a more in depth discussion of the solar system. The third part then covers stars and stellar evolution, while the final part is devoted to galaxies and cosmology.
The math required is minimal (i don't think the average high school graduate should have any problems), and a wealth of pictures and graphs, together with elaborate explanations in the text make sure, that this book will be a pleasure to learn from for the interested college student.
Every chapter (30 in all) ends with a short recapitulation of the most important concepts learned, a good number of review questions (to which the answers are supplied in the back of the book) and suggestions for further reading (books, magazines and weblinks).
The book comes also with a CD, on which there are further review tests to all chapters (of course with answers), as well as additional animations and much more.
As if that were not enough, there is a companion webside that offers additional tests and answers plus updated information, since after all, astronomy is progressing swiftly.
All in all, there cannot be much doubt that this is one of the best and most well rounded astronomy textbooks on the market. If you have to learn the basics of astronomy due to a course, or if you simply want to enrich your horizon, this book will make either task both easier and more enjoyable.

I'm the author of Universe w/ Starry Night Enthusiast CD-ROM, and I thank Lonewolf Astronomer for pointing out Amazon's error in describing the book as a hardcover --- it is in fact a softcover. I've asked Amazon to change their description to reflect this, and they have done so.

Lonewolf Astronomer included a link to Universe: The Solar System w/Starry Night Enthusiast CD-ROM, which is indeed cheaper than Universe. It is also quite a bit shorter, since it omits all of the chapters from Universe which concern stars, galaxies, and cosmology (Chapters 17-27).

Another abbreviated version of the book is Universe: Stars & Galaxies w/Starry Night Enthusiast CD-ROM, which includes all of the chapters from Universe on stars, galaxies, and cosmology but omits Chapters 9-15 on the solar system.

All three versions --- Universe, Universe: The Solar System, and Universe: Stars and Galaxies --- are available with the Starry Night Enthusiast CD-ROM.

Finally, in order to post this response, Amazon forced me to rate my own book. I hope the vast Amazon public will excuse the fact that I gave it five stars.

excellent, informative, illuminating

This is a premier text for the fields of astromony and comsmology. Thorough, deep, professional, concise, technically and scientifically accurate, but also, imaginative, filled with the wonder of discovery and learning. Beginning with the ancient origins of astronomical pursuits, the reader is taken through the unfolding world of space and time. The electromagnetic spectrum, light and optics, telescopes, planet and solar system formations, stars-their nature, galaxies, quasars, black holes, all of these wonders are explored. Do yourself a flavor-get it!

Good easy to read and understand book!

I ordered this book from BOOKS4CHEAP and they never sent it, so I ordered it again with Classicbook and it shipped supper fast. I needed this book for my social welfare class, so I had to rent it or buy it. I am studying to be a social worker, so I thought it would be better to buy the book. I am so happy I did. I love the book; it has a lot of interesting points of views on how the social work life is. I also love the book because it is easy to read and understand; I am not a fan of big and complicated words so this book is perfect for me. Highly recommend it ;)

Received very outdated copy of the book, as such of no use to me in my PhD research

The book I received was a very old version of social work practice and as such is of no use to me. I needed it for my PhD purposes and since the version I have received is very outdated, I cannot make us of it at all. The sad things is this old 1986 book still depicts its Barnes and Noble price of $23.95 and to I had to pay ZAR 492.59 for it.

Just what I needed

This book is required for my social work classes, and is priced a minimum of $20 more in the student store. I ordered it when my classes started and received it before my next class meeting. It was used, but there it was in better condition than the used books at the student store. I am very happy with my purchase.

Egan Channels Robert L. Forward and Hal Clement in a Hard SF Tale

Greg Egan is one of my favorite science fiction authors, but he seems to be nearly unknown in the U.S. I have been waiting for this book to arrive for some time, so I wound up ordering a British edition from Amazon UK. This review assumes the text is the same.

Egan's story is set in the galactic core, inhabited by a race known as the Aloof, because they seem almost indifferent to any attempts at communication from the Amalgam, the loose network of civilizations that inhabit the rest of the galaxy. However, they do allow thrill-seeking members of the Amalgam to enter their transportation network, digitizing themselves for transmission at the speed of light across the galactic core, instead of the long way around it.

A chunk of rock containing DNA leads a couple to commit their efforts to tracking down the mystery of a lost alien race inside the Aloof-controlled core. That's the setup, but the real fascination of this book is the weird physics and civilization of the surviving aliens, who live on a fragment of rock in the gravity well of a neutron star. By a process of deduction and scientific measurement using primitive tools the inhabitants are able to deduce their true situation in the universe and also to come to understand the perils they face.

Much of the book consists of the scientific inquiries of the aliens, rendered in great detail, in particular the way they deduce their orbital mechanics by measuring the forces at work inside their world. It reminds me of Robert L. Foward's fantastic hard SF novel Dragon's Egg, which describes a race living on the surface of a neutron star, their bodies made out of degenerate matter, and also of Hal Clement's Mission of Gravity.

Egan tries to make his stories character-driven, and although we do wind up caring what happens to his characters, he really shines at the physics. If you don't have a good working knowledge of gravitation and the forces that act on a body while in an orbit or rotating, you won't really get much out of this book. Perhaps that dooms it to a relatively small audience. But if you like physics and you like speculative fiction, and in particular like thinking about the scientific method and how we came to discover what we know about the universe, you just might love it!

Remaining Aloof

Egan's first novel for 6 years is set in a very far future where an evolved humanity has spread out to inhabit the galaxy's spiral arms, where lifespans are measured in millennia and travel is possible almost anywhere in the galaxy. The exception is the central galactic bulge which is inhabited by the aptly named Aloof, who exist in splendid isolation and firmly but gently repel all attempts to go there.

Sounds pretty intriguing, doesn't it? The Aloof are a mystery. Obviously highly advanced, but unwilling to interact with humanity. Until two intrepid humans accept an invitation to travel to into Aloof territory to examine a strange rock world inhabited by sentient insect-like creatures.

Still sounds intriguing, doesn't it? As always, Egan is concerned with hard science - mathematics, physics, genetics and astronomy - and indeed the nature of scientific discovery. And therein lies the problem. Incandescence suffers from the same shortcoming as did Schild's Ladder - too much science, not enough fiction. Both the human and insectoid characters are painted far too thinly to arouse any real emotion and the dialogue serves mainly as a vehicle for explaining the science rather than giving any insight into the characters themselves. As a reader I felt a kind of intellectual detachment from the events - like I was watching but not particularly engaged. Rather like the Aloof, in fact.

Nonetheless, the science is intriguing, even for a non-scientific type like me, and the ideas are really big. So, if that's your thing, you'll probably enjoy it more than I did. For me, though, the biggest most intriguing mystery of all, the Aloof themselves, remained unsolved. Indeed, I gleaned little insight into their nature or their motives. For me they remained as aloof as ever.

I still think Egan is one of the best SF writers around, but Incandescence is not his most engaging work.

Where was the editor?

While the book has a wonderfully evoked sophisticated far future, that does not forgive the missing fundamental requirement that the plot go somewhere and make internal sense. The two, obviously converging plot lines don't converge. I had to go back and re-read the ending to make sure I hadn't missed something. Another reviewer here confirmed my confusion --- you can't tell if one plot preceeded or followed the other by a huge span of time. It is also possible that the Splinter of the "Splinter" plot line was NOT the populated fragment found in the other plot. The Aloof remain so from beginning to end.
I would only recommend this book to college physics students having a hard time and looking for a painless way to have orbital mechanics explained without math.
Given Egaan's earlier, much better work, I was very disappointed. Perhaps there is a sequel in the works that will tie things together. If so, would it have hurt to put a teaser to the next part so that we don't have to wonder if Egan and his editors went over the edge. Which brings me to the title for my review. Where were the editors? A published book is not just the work of the author. Decent editing could have saved this book. Likewise critical reading in draft form by some cogent sci-fi readers or authors.
If this is part one of an unannounced series shame on Egan and the publishing house. I don't mind buying several books to have one story told (although I would prefer one, fat book to three skinny ones) I don't like be lured into thinking I'm buying a complete work only to find I have a fragment. I actually prefer to sit back and wait until the series is compete and then buy and read them at once, in sequence.

Too many errors. I could not get past the spelling "pearl" for "purl". This book must not have had any editor. I am glad I did not spend money for it. Bi read the patterns and deleted it.

Good book for beginners with some experience

It is a really great book for knitters with a little more knowledge than just beginners (but not necesarily as much as intermediate level). The knitter should already know how to read patterns, and have developed a level of patience for not so small projects, but otherwise the book not only offers easy to follow instructions, but also patterns that teach you different techniques and help you feel more confident to tackle future projects.

a whole lot of cookbook

This book has a lot of engine type descriptions as well as engine component descriptions that will be very useful for the student or the engine enthusiast trying ot advance his/her knowledge. Many different types of engines are described from many different manufacturers, lots of them european. This book is good for learning about engine and engine operation but is not detailed enough for engine design (it is not heavy on the math). there are a lot of rules of thumb for engine component modifications (such as manifold design) which may be useful for someone enhancing a performance engine but for the engine tuner, there is very little information that applies (electronic spark advance theories for example are sorely lacking while too many pages are used to describe electronic components theory of operation). this book is the best and most modern tutorial available today however.

Dated, but great reference for engine balancing

This book is older now, so not all of the technology is necessarily up to date. However, the section on engine balance is excellent, and I actually purchased this book specifically for that reason. It goes into better detail about several crankshaft configurations and how they are balanced, better than many other books on the subject.

Beautiful

So Beautiful!!!

I can honestly say I was surprised when I found out there was going to be a sequel to The Edge of Never. Don’t get me wrong, I was thrilled to know there was going to be more of Andrew and Camryn’s story, just surprised because I really didn’t think it needed a sequel but boy was I wrong.

I could go on and on about Andrew and Camryn but I’m going to make this a short and sweet review because honestly if you loved
The Edge of Never, I think you’ll love The Edge of Always. It’s a beautiful continuation of Andrew and Camryn’s journey. What I loved most about this book, besides the fact that these two make me laugh and make my heart swell and I admire how they live life to the fullest, is that this story eventually takes you deep into the future. There have been many times where I have finished a book and my mind goes off and wonders how most of or the rest of the couple’s life was together so I couldn’t be happier that I got those answers for my favorite book couple.

The Edge of Always gave perfect closure to my ALL time favorite book. I will Never forget this story…I will Always cherish it!

The perfect ending to a perfect love story

I simply loved The Edge of Always. I was truly satisfied with the end of The Edge of Never but am glad that J.A. Redmerski gave us more Andrew and Camryn.

This sequel is clearly Andrew's story although there are alternating POV's throughtout. I loved getting more of their story even though they are dealt some more heartbreak.

But in the end this is the story of a beautiful, almost perfect love. Andrew Parrish has remained one of my top 5 bbf's for a reason. He lets Camryn be Camryn. No matter what, he is by her side and supports her 100%. And it's never a sappy kind of devotion. It's the kind of devotion that lasts a lifetime, that makes you know that this will be the couple that lives to their 80's or beyond and die within hours of each other because they simply cannot live without each other.

I really enjoyed getting an update about Natalie and Aidan and Asher and getting that glimpse into the future seeing how they all continue their lives.

Andrew and Camyrn's road trip was yet another great journey and I'm so glad to have been able to read about it.

I cannot recommend this book enough. It was the perfect continuation of a love just so incredible.

Its not the Edge of Never, 3.5 stars

Im having a hard time with what to rate this book although it wasn't horrible it wasn't great either. I wish we could do half stars on our rating, I would give this a 3.5. First off I love Andrew and Camryn for that reason alone I would give it high marks. However this book fell flat for me especially with the anticipation of it. It started off really slow and I was hoping it would pick up. It seemed like it was headed that way then it just sort of droned on and on. Also the road trips was just long and boring except for one really bad incident. Which I just thought was not really needed. There were definitely some memorable parts and great interactions between Andrew and Camryn, and Andrew was as yummy as always. I really wished it was a little steamier and just had more of something.... Small ****spoiler alert**** I also did not find the whole having to live free and on the move all the time very realistic. I love that they are both free spirits but it drove me crazy that they kept alluding to the fact that those who make a home in one spot have something wrong with them and are destined for unhappiness. Ultimately the book was more about Camryn and her feelings and what she was/is going through. I love Andrew and I love the way he loves Camryn and wants to give her the world, but it was like he never got to grieve over the miscarriage or even reflect on the fact that he almost died.

A Meeting of Art, Reason, and Fun.

Patricia O'Conner's Words Fail Me presents so many practical insights into effective writing that I suspect it would be valuable to almost any writer. And there's a bonus: she has a great sense of humor. She debunks the faux pas fallacies that snobbishly tell us how not to write -- don't use contractions, don't start sentences with conjunctions, etc. And she tells us how these supposed `rules' came to be. Wisely, O'Conner's most important rule is this:
"Your first duty to the reader is to make sense. Everything else -- eloquence, beautiful images, catchy phrases, melodic and rhythmic language -- comes later, if at all. I'm all for artistry, but it's better to write something homely and clear than something lovely and unintelligible."
I read quite a lot, mostly nonfiction (philosophy, reference, science, theology, and wilderness travel). Inevitably, reading compels me to write -- I've submitted more than fifty book reviews to this forum. Yet I'm never quite happy with my writing. This is not unusual. "Your favorite novel or history or memoir is just someone's last revision," says O'Conner.
As a student I disliked studying the nuts and bolts of English. Words, their accuracy, economy, and artistry, interest me far more now, and this book is the first "how to write" text I have read. At the risk of belaboring the obvious (because good writing doesn't): it was a good choice.
Highly recommended.

Another useful AND entertaining book from Ms. O'Conner!

I bought a personal copy of this author's last book, WOE IS I. After reading it and realizing how clevely it was written and how useful the content was, I went out and got 5 more for several friends. We have all found it wonderfully helpful for those vexing questions of grammar and usage. Well, Ms. O'Conner has done it again. In her witty, breezy, upbeat style she has written a truly readable book about writing. It seems like literally millions of us are communicating more and more - both instantly and globally - these days thanks to the Internet. Writing clearly and in an interesting manner has become more important than ever. And, since our own written words are often our first introduction to others, it's beneficial to each of us to learn the tricks and tips that make writing flow smoothly and represent accurately what we really mean to say. Ms. O'Conner example's are from all sorts of literature and from her own imagination. I laughed out loud at Kim and Alec in the hot tub. And several quoted passages have inspired me to read the works in which they appear. I hope this book finds a wide audience. It would be useful for anyone who writes and aspires to do it well.

There are many excellent parts in this book, it should prove useful for the newcomer to SQL server development.

This book aims to get the newcomer started in SQL Server development, how does it fare?

SQL Server is one of the most popular databases in the world, so breaking into this area should be rewarding. This book is targeted at the beginner, it should also be helpful to others wanting to improve their database knowledge.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 What Is SQL Server?

This chapter opens with a brief review of SQL Server’s history, from the original Sybase/Microsoft offering through to SQL Server 2014 – and the major features of each version are listed. Next, the major components of SQL Server are briefly described (e.g. database engine, SQL Agent). Business Intelligence (BI) components (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS) are briefly described – these allow the import, analysis and reporting of data.

The chapter continues with a look at the various editions of SQL Server, highlighting their major features. The chapter ends with a brief overview of some useful SQL Server tools including: SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT), Configuration Manager, and SQLCMD.

This chapter puts SQL Server into context, its history, editions, and tools are briefly described. There’s a very good point about buying the developer edition of SQL Server, this gives enterprise functionality at a cheap cost.

The chapter is easy to read, starts with the basics, and has good explanations and discussions. The author has a relaxed manner – including some humour, and gives positive feedback, which should be reassuring for beginners. Subsequent chapters have useful screenshots, step-by-step walkthroughs, and helpful T-SQL code. These traits apply to all the chapters of the book.

Conclusion

This book aims to get the newcomer started in SQL Server development, and succeeds. It is mostly easy to read, with good explanations, discussions, screenshots, T-SQL code, website links, and practical step-by-step walkthroughs. Additionally, the author provides a humorous dialogue, and positive feedback, which should be especially useful for the beginner.

In some parts, this book could have been clearer and simpler, with fewer tables, and less scripts changes (very repetitive). Since it is an introductory book, it would be useful to have a section on where to go next for further information (e.g. newsletters, blogs, websites).

There are many excellent parts in this book, it should prove useful for the newcomer to SQL server development.

About the Author
Ricardo Zavala has a BS in Geophysics from UNAM in Mexico and a MS in geophysics from the University of Oklahoma. He started work for Pemex Exploration and Production, Mexico’s state-owned oil company in 2000 and currently is studying his PhD in Geophysics at the University of Houston focusing on unconventional reservoirs.
