The Last Days of Judas Iscariot
ACT 1Darkness. Rain. From nowhere, a woman emerges from her past.HENRIETTA ISCARIOT: No parent should have to bury a child ... No mother should have to bury a son. Mothers are not meant to bury sons. It is not in the natural order of things.I buried my son. In a potter's field. In a field of Blood. In empty, acrid silence. There was no funeral. There were no mourners. His friends all absent. His father dead. His sisters refusing to attend. I discovered his body alone, I dug his grave alone, I placed him in a hole, and covered him with dirt and rock alone. I was not able to finish burying him before sundown, and I'm not sure if that affected his fate ...I begrudge God none of this. I do not curse him or bemoan my lot. And though my heart keeps beating only to keep breaking--I do not question why.I remember the morning my son was born as if it was yesterday. The moment the midwife placed him in my arms, I was infused with a love beyond all measure and understanding. I remember holding my son, and looking over at my own mother and saying, "Now I understand why the sun comes up at day and the stars come out at night. I understand why rain falls gently. Now I understand you, Mother" ...I loved my son every day of his life, and I will love him ferociously long after I've stopped breathing. I am a simple woman. I am not bright or learn-ed. I do not read. I do not write. My opinions are not solicited. My voice is notimportant ... On the day of my son's birth I was infused with a love beyond all measure and understanding ... The world tells me that God is in Heaven and that my son is in Hell. I tell the world the one true thing I know: If my son is in Hell, then there is no Heaven--because if my son sits in Hell, there is no God. 
JESUS, carrying a bucket, has approached the woman. He kisses her cheek. She does not notice. They vanish. 
A courtroom. Court is in session. A woman with wings, GLORIA, rises. 
GLORIA: Between Heaven and Hell--there is another place. This place: Hope. Hope--is located right over here in downtown Purgatory.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Next case!GLORIA: Now, Purgatory, contrary to popular belief, has plumbing, and bodegas, and they even got a movie theater and a little park that people can walk their dogs at. Hope--well it ain't got none a that, and it definitely don't smell good.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Next case, Bailiff!GLORIA: I worked here in Hope for two and a half years--thass how I got these wings. And I wouldn't trade nothing for these wings--I can fly with these wings! At night, I fly down to Earth, and I watch my littlest Babyboy sleep. He's seven, and he's got a picture of me on his wall--right in between Shaquille O'Neal and the Incredible Hulk. Then, I go fly uptown to the window of my oldest Babygirl's house and watch my granchild, Little Bit, sleep. Most nights I can see my oldest Babygirl, Tanya, with her feet in a pot of hot water, always studying books; and I'll stick around to see her man, Winston, come home late at night from work,always with a muffin or a hamburger for my Babygirl. Winston's love for my Babygirl is all over his face--I was wrong about him, I always thought he was shifty ... When I get back to Heaven, I tell my husband, DeLayne, all about it. DeLayne don't like to fly, but he likes to hear the stories, and he likes how I look like when I come home from Earth all "windblown" ... Now Hope, it changes with the times, but has stood always as God's gift to the last of his children. It is said that every civilization rearranges the cosmic furniture differently. In biblical times, Hope was an Oasis in the Desert. In medieval days, a shack free of Plague. Today, Hope is no longer a place for contemplation--litigation being the preferred new order of the day.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Where's my damn bailiff??!!BAILIFF: Here, sir.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Then call the next damn case!!!BAILIFF: Yes, sir. "God and the Kingdom of Heaven and Earth versus Thorseen the Implacable: Motion to appeal"!JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Denied--Next case!BAILIFF: "God and the Kingdom of Heaven and Earth versus Henry Wayne Masters--"JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Nope!BAILIFF: "God and the Kingdom of Heaven and Earth versus Benedict Arnold--"JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Aw, hell, no!BAILIFF: "God and the Kingdom of Heaven and Earth versus Judas Iscariot--"JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: --"Judas Iscariot" ??!! Who brings this crap before me??!!CUNNINGHAM: Your Honor, my name is Fabiana Aziza Cunningham--JUDGE LITTLEFIELD:--Never heard of you!CUNNINGHAM: I live in Purgatory.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Well you shoulda kept your legs closed! Motion denied! Next case!CUNNINGHAM: Your Honor, I have a writ signed by Saint Peter at the Gates of Heaven!JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Next Case!CUNNINGHAM: But I have a writ!BAILIFF: She has a writ, sir.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Excuse me?!BAILIFF: Just saying: The lady, she's got a writ, so, I mean--JUDGE LITTLEFIELD:--Bailiff: let's set up a little signal between the two of us, okay?BAILIFF: Okay.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Good. Willing and able to prosecute this sham of a case and defend the Gates of Heaven and the Kingdom of God against this big shenanigan of a so-called writ, great handsome sir! Look no further, Your Honor! Yusef Akbar Wahid Al-Nassar Gamel El-Fayoumy is a beacon for justice!JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: A "beacon," eh?EL-FAYOUMY: May I approach you?JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: The bench, not me!EL-FAYOUMY: The bench! Of course! YES!--And it is a lovely bench, splendid and sturdy like the great derrière that rests upon it!! Your Honor, I received wind of this so-called "writ" several weeks ago. I have been preparing night and day to refute the allegations it contains!CUNNINGHAM: Your Honor, let the record reflect I have no opposition to Mr. El-Fayoumy here.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD (to CUNNINGHAM): Speak when spoken to!!!EL-FAYOUMY: Do not bait this great man, lady! He presided over the appeal of Attila the Hun when you were nothing more than a cheap shot of whiskey on your great-great-grandfather's first unpaid bar tab!JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Well said!EL-FAYOUMY: Forgive the outburst.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: ... You got a license to practice, Mr. El-Fajita?EL-FAYOUMY: A license? A license! Yes. Absolutely!! Submitted for your most scrupulously discerning approval, eminently great sir! 
EL-FAYOUMY crosses, fumbles, searching his pockets for the license. 
BAILIFF (cautiously): Sir, his name's El-Fayoumy.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: What?BAILIFF: You called him El-Fajita.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Just gimme my glasses!BAILIFF: You're wearing them, sir.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD (exploding): My other glasses!!!!!!!!!BAILIFF: Oh. Here.EL-FAYOUMY: Most worshipful lord and master: very tiny problem. My license, I seem to have left it in my other suit. I could rush back to Hell and retrieve it--JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: From Hell are you?EL-FAYOUMY: Temporarily detained--a problem with my papers.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: You sure about that?EL-FAYOUMY: Quite sure, your grace. I attribute the mix-up to the Americanization of the afterlife--completely understandable in lieu of recent events.JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: You're damn right.EL-FAYOUMY: Yes, your eminence--as are you, great sir!JUDGE LITTLEFIELD: Cunningham! Let me see this "writ."CUNNINGHAM: Here, Your Honor.

My Favorite Play Ever

This is my favorite play ever. I have lost track of how many times I have seen it in produced in different cities. Every time I see it I come away with something new. I love being able to read it. If you like bold, thoughtful plays this is for you. It is one of the most interesting treatments of what the love and grace of Christ means and role we may play accepting it. Warning though, do not read this play if you are easily offended by by strong language or Biblical themes presented in a non-traditional way.

I had such high hopes.
Maybe it's because I have a theological education, but I found this trite and eye-rollingly predictable. It purports to be a fresh, contemporary take on Judas but I thought it felt very dated -- something right out of the 70's.
Maybe you have to see it.

The Last Days of Judas Iscariot

This was an engaging and satisfying look at an old story from a very new angle -- viewing what is traditionally presented as a black and white story of betrayal and greed as an extremely complex web of the interactions of many complex personalities, both human and divine. The book itself, although advertised as in good condition, arrived in "like new" condition, and arrived sooner than expected.

Good book if you enjoying coding.

I'm not a huge fan of coding, but I needed this for a class, the book itself is well written but no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't get interested.

Not the best.....

This is a book I purchase for a college class. If you have a very firm grasp on c++ and are looking to learn data structures you may have better luck with this book than I have. The book is very repetitive on parts that most programmers at the level where they should be learning c++ data structures should already be very familiar with, but when it comes to the new material they are a bit vague. I do like that the example programs from the book are all online and can be accessed easily, however I have found that I have better luck learning the data structures by reading my first c++ book which was on learning c++ from "Hello World" to Binary Trees. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Readable but horrible

Our teacher assigned this text because we all had such a good experience with Savitch's "Problem Solving with C++". This book is however quite horrible. The text goes on and on and on and on! If you only needed a page or two of concise reading to get an idea, this book will make sure that you read through eight pages of unnecessary garbage to get there. Our teacher would assign the chapters as reading, and I would try staying up to 3AM the night before trying to read the very long chapters, and it is ridiculous!

Our teacher even turned on it later. The book breaks rules for good coding in its examples that our teacher had to explicitly point out (and she did take off for those errors in our own programs). I think there is only supposed to be "one entry, one exit" and no breaking out of a program, and the book has other errors too.

Surprisingly fresh sci-fi from nearly 50 years ago

Komatsu's Virus while published in 1964 was recently translated into English. In spite of the time span, themes and characters eerily resonate with today. Also surprising is that this story was published several years before the classic Andromeda Strain with which it overlaps. The story itself is set in the early 1970's but with an early 60's set of conditions: space exploration was advancing, biological warfare was still being pursued by major nations, and nuclear confrontation between the US and Soviet Union was front and center. In essence, a series of unfortunate steps some by nature and some by man, coalesce to produce a global apocalypse that leaves a tiny contingent of scientists in Antarctica as the sole survivors who must race to prevent their destruction from dead men switches left over from the defunct nuclear powers.

The science is surprisingly relevant even after 50 years. Komatsu weaves a complex web of outer space germs, a fledgling biological manipulation project, a credible influenza pandemic, and a concomitant chicken disease that wipes out vaccine production capability to craft the perfect storm of global annihilation. Societal breakdown and collapse occurs in a realistic, haunting manner. Perhaps the only ding to his prescience might be his optimism that earthquake prediction would have been solved within the decade.

For devourers of the end of the world apocalypse theme this is a definite classic that should not be overlooked.

The Cold War, Japanese Style

Reading this book in the early stages of the Ebola outbreak may not have been my smartest choice.

_Virus_ is grim, bleak, exciting, and even a little over the top campy--not quite in equal measure (it's mostly grim). Instead of a viral outbreak turning most of the world's population into rampaging zombies, an outbreak kills just about everybody. And rather than taking the post-apocalyptic moment as its starting point, Komatsu attends at great length to collapse of human civilization. In grand Cold War fashion, the militaries and governments of the US, Soviet Union, Great Britain, Japan, and others are tripping over themselves and each other (in ways I can't specify without revealing too much). Scientists make a variety of almost-right guesses in their efforts to stop the disease.

My biggest complaint with the book is a handful of long, very pedantic lectures about science, philosophy, history, and politics. As often happens with science fiction, the science both matters and doesn't--if you're a geneticist or microbiologist, I can imagine there are all kinds of problems that most of us wouldn't recognize. But it seems at times as though Komatsu wants to bury any problems with the science (or philosophy or history) in words words words! You can skim those parts and probably won't miss a lot.

That, and 1960s gender politics. Don't be surprised.

Can't stop reading over

This is the original novel by Sakyo Komatsu that was adapted into the 1980 movie "Virus" (Fukkatsu no Hi).
I was only a child when I watched it and since then my appreciation for any kind of catastrophical movies never lessened, especially those involving viruses and the likes . That is to say, the fascination that movie played on my imagination!
When I found out that finally the original novel had been translated in English, I rushed to get the book as soon as possible.
And the wait was all worth it: the story is enticing from start to end to read and follows step-by-step, deep in details, the plot portrayed in the movie.
There are some minor tweaks in the names, the major one being the disease name, that goes by "Tibetan flu" instead of the more impressive "Italian flu" like it was in the movie but, apart from that, I have no complaints at all.
A masterpiece I highly recommend to every science fiction reader, in particular those with a thing for disasters.

This book is a must read and is recommended for every household shelve, especially for parents with teenagers and young adults. It is intriguing, educational and morally inclined. It covers almost every area of our realistic everyday life we live, and the challenges that comes with it. The book is a source of inspiration and encouragement not only to the age groups mentioned above but for every works of life. My spirit was uplifted as I was thoroughly informed and entertained with every page I flipped through. The more I read, the more I wanted to find out what the next page had in store. This book is indeed written with love for our future generation, as obviously lots of thoughts and hard work went into it.

Brilliant anthology of Ender short stories

The `Ender's Saga' and its most famous beginning, "Ender's Game", are among the most revered science-fiction series of all-time. While Card did a marvelous job chronicling the life and times of Ender Wiggin in the first four novels of the `Ender's Saga', and richly enhanced that universe with his subsequent three-book "Ender's Shadow" series, one could not help but think that there might be more than need be told. Enter "First Meetings in the Enderverse", an anthology of four short stories that give even greater insight into Ender's world.

One of the four short stories included in "First Meetings..." is the actual original "Ender's Game" short story. Card wrote this in the mid-1970's and expanded it into the award-winning novel everyone knows in the early to mid-1980's. Here, fans of "Ender's Game" can read Card's original vision and appreciate how the full novel came to be. The other three shorts tell some fascinating tales. The first one deals with the life of Ender's father, John Paul Wiggin, when he was a little kid, not much older than Ender at the time of "Ender's Game". Without revealing too much, here, it can be said that the events of young John Paul's life explain a great deal about what came to pass for Ender a generation later. The second tale advances John Paul to college age and reveals how John Paul and Ender's mother, Theresa, came to meet and fall in love. The final tale (after the original "Ender's Game") bridges a period of time between the ending of "Ender's Game" and its amazing sequel "Speaker for the Dead". The mystery of how Ender and his constant virtual companion, Jane, came into each other's lives is explained and it makes for an amusing anecdote.

Once again, Card continues to show a brilliant grasp of human emotion and personal interactions in bringing these shorts to life. He doesn't get bogged down in the existentialism that plagued "Children of the Mind". He sticks with elements that make this saga great.

Fill in the holes of the Ender saga

Ender's parents never got their due in the original Ender's Game novel, but Card began developing them as fascinating characters in Ender's Shadow and its sequels. If you've only read Ender's Game, you probably think of Ender's father as a simpleton, and his mother as... well, as nothing, really, because there's so little about her in the book.

But of course, there's a contradiction in that. How could two people of average intelligence produce three super geniuses (Ender, Valentine, and Peter)? Ender's Shadow began to resolve that problem by presenting them as being very smart, but hiding their intelligence so they did not overshadow their children.

This book goes back in their lives before they got married. In the father's case, it begins when he is a small boy. Besides developing two great characters, numerous holes in the original novels are nicely resolved - the religion of Ender's parents and how that plays into the fertility laws, how Ender's family got to America, and how the family was induced to produce kids like Ender.

Another character's genesis is also covered in the final story - the computer program Jane, who will be familiar to readers of the Ender's Game sequels. It's a short, satisfying read, and very much in Card's distinctive style.

Finally, there is the novella that started it all. I read this when it first appeared, and this award winning story motivated me to get the Ender's Game novel as soon as it appeared. If you like the Ender universe, you really ought to read this just to see how it all got started. Be warned - there are some inconsistencies with the novel. But they are minor, and it's interesting to see the evolution from the novella to the novel.

This is a short read. It is suitable for teens and adults - the same audience as Ender's Game, really. If you liked any of the Ender series, you really ought to get this.

Filling in the blanks; Ender's mom and dad and more

This book of short stories contains material that will interest fans of Orson Scott Card's "Ender" series. There are two stories about Theresa and John Paul Wiggin--how they met and how John Paul grew up in Poland. These will be meaningful especially to readers of the parallel sequel to "Ender's Game", the Shadow series.

Also included is the ORIGINAL "Ender's Game." This is really fascinating. I have to say, the writing is very inferior to the revised and novelized version of this original short story. But for those who love the book, you have a glimpse into writer's craft. How did Card deepen each character? How did he revise his conversation and exposition? Good lessons here for any budding writer, and great for those who love the Ender's series as you can see the development of the books from an average short story to a thrilling series of books.

The short stories end with a small tale about a tax collector dealing with Ender as he roams from planet to planet after he leaves Earth. This is meaningful for the last in the Ender's series (Shadow of the Giant.) And it's a good story in itself.

Recommende for fans of the Card series.

In its two previous editions this book has proved to be an accessible and balanced introduction to modern particle physics, suitable for those students needed a more comprehensive introduction to the subject than provided by the ‘compendium’ style physics books.

Particle Physics is the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces between them.

Particle Physics, Third Edition, provides a short introduction to particle physics, which emphasizes the foundations of the standard model in experimental data, rather than its more formal and theoretical aspects. It is intended for undergraduate students who have previously taken introductory courses in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics and special relativity.

The structure of the book is simple. The first three chapters give a brief overview of the subject. They introduce some of the basic ideas that are used extensively throughout the rest of the book and discuss leptons, quarks and hadrons and the interactions between them. The remaining chapters discuss a wide selection of important topics in more detail. These include experimental methods; space-time symmetries; the quark model of hadrons; quantum chromodynamics and jet physics; the weak interaction, including its unification with the electromagnetic interaction, and CP-violation and related symmetries; and a brief account of some of the important open questions ‘beyond the standard model’ that are currently being investigated in laboratories around the world. Problems to aid student study are given at the end of each chapter, with solutions given in an Appendix.

good first introduction

The other two current reviews are far too harsh.

This book is a great introduction to the phenomenology, and is up to date.

I've been trying to figure out the theory of particle physics
for while now, by reading. I've thoroughly understood and taught nonrelativistic
quantum theory and also the Dirac Equation for decades, so I'm not
an undergrad. I've looked at Peskin and Schroder, and studied Gross carefully.

Gross is very good indeed, but not up to date and not a good intro.
I recently got this book and "Particle Physics A concise Introduction" by
Seiden from the library. I scanned through each of them. Both are good. I read through
this one today, and got to page 200 of 350 in one day. It's clear, and makes
lots of points very very clearly without proof. Oh, did I mention
that the points are up to date? I guess I did. Seiden does similar stuff
at a more detailed but incomplete math level. Then there are the detailed
theory books.

If you can find this and Seiden at a library, I very strongly recommend
you read them along with the more detailed textbooks. They will give you
a broad outline of the trees. But at the price ... publishers in general must
get special insurance riders for gunshots to the foot.

To quote a physicist with funny hair: "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler".

This book has the problem that it simplifies things to the point where I found them harder to understand than I think they would have been with a deeper, more complicated explanation. I have lost count of the number of times it says some variation of "If we used quantum field theory, we could derive the following result". Constantly being given bits of information with no real explanation of how they hang together makes the learning process very tedious, since it often boils down to essentially memorising trivia.

That said, it succeeds at giving a qualitative overview of particle physics. Not necessarily much deeper than a motivated reader could find by obsessively reading Wikipedia articles for an equivalent amount of time, but still.

Class Textbook - Poor Choice

This was my book for undergraduate particle physics elective. A younger professor taught it; I wasn't expecting intense rigor, but any non-physics person could follow along once we passed scattering. This book is more a Zoology of particles than physics. I know more content now, but I really don't feel I have knowledge of Particle Physics. I felt like we kept slogging through the same processes repeatedly.
