Incredibly deep may be too deep for an average reader to understand..
By Marina Tonkonogy
First off, the original title of this book is "The Art of Being Yourself". That's the title of the original Russian publication. I have no idea why they changed the title in the American publication. Anyway..

The first time I read this book was back in 80-s when I still lived in the former USSR, long before my family and I immigrated to the US. It was an eye-opener back then and it is still an eye-opener now when I am re-reading it 30-something years later. Now, when I am a much older and mature person I can see and appreciate the depth of the author's visions of human mind and behavior, which I wasn't able to do in my youth. One thing I can tell is that I haven't yet encountered any mental health professional, who would have such a profound, holistic and unique understanding of human nature than Vladimir Levi.

Yes, the book is designed as a self-help guide as it has specific exercises intended to increase your self-awareness and self-control.They helped me a great deal back when I was young and read the book for the first time and I hope they will be helpful this time again. However, if you are someone who just looks yet for another populist version of self-help that instructs you on how to be happy, "successful" and all that non-sense, this book is not for you. All the techniques and exercises in the book only work in the context of your general awareness of yourself and life around you. In order to benefit from the book you need to be able to think deeply, you have to be someone who likes to reflect, contemplate, question everything and willing to de-program yourself from the cultural, familial and other types of mind-programming. This is not something that people, and especially people in the US, like to do. So, if you are not interested in reflecting and questioning your current belief system, the book may not be for you.

a great learning resource
By Devon
This has been a great way for me to introduce myself to computer programming. It is kept at an easy pace with many examples. I have never programmed before, but this book is clearly comprehensible at my knowledge level, which means for a complete beginner. The instructions and explanations are straightforward and down-to-earth. I like the short chapters because I can read one chapter in one day, including typing in and understanding the examples. And the price was quite low, I actually wasn’t expecting this level of quality for an inexpensive book.

That was a pleasant journey!
By Daniel Müller
Some of my friends are programmers and they write their code in c++, so I spontaneously choose c++ for learning programming. I choose this book among other "Beginners" books based on its contents (using "LookInside"), where I saw that the book explains how to make animations. Computer animations are actually used as examples for explaining structures and classes.

The book could have a nicer and more modern look. You will find no icons or smileys in it. Not only because of that, the primary school children are not the audience for this book, as the arithmetic is not trivial enough for them.

It looks to me that the book is based on Mr Comptons lectures for his university students. It has a nice flow of interlinked chapters, and each execution of code-example gives you sense of achievement. That is very motivational and keeps you going on to the next chapter.

A “must read"" for every sales professional serious about making more money, Green Zone Selling is a collection of more than 50 best practices and winning approaches used by top salespeople in business today.

The Mind Zone
 How your belief system dictates what you do (and don’t do) every day
 Why 20 percent of all salespeople make 80 percent of the money
 Moving your mindset to a more positive way of thinking…today!

The Time Zone
 Time is money; what that really means to commissioned salespeople
 How to identify and concentrate on “high yield” sales activities
 Five easy steps for managing your day and taking control of your time

The Contact Zone
 Discovering and practicing the art of “sales speak”
 How to overcome sales call reluctance and a fear of prospecting
 The five most critical selling skills every salesperson needs to master

The Future Zone

Who says you can’t train a cat? Just when you thought you had reached the end of your ball of twine, one of America’s most popular cat behaviorists comes to the rescue of perplexed cat owners everywhere, providing practical and effective strategies for solving every feline behavior problem imaginable—from litter box issues to scratching, spraying, biting, and beyond.

Cat Whisperer Mieshelle Nagelschneider has been helping people deal with these dilemmas for two decades, achieving a near-perfect success rate. Central to her approach is a keen understanding of the unique way cats see the world—their need for safety and security, their acute territoriality, and their insatiable desire to catch and kill prey. Her proven C.A.T. cat behavior modification plan is a commonsense course of action that can be specifically tailored to your cat in the context of its behavior problems and its particular household environment. Easy-to-implement solutions help transform even the most anxiety-riddled companions into confident, gregarious, and relaxed cats who live longer, happier, and healthier lives. Inside you’ll discover

• how to harness the power of “friendly pheromones” to improve your cat’s appetite, exploration, grooming, and play
• where, when, and how to create a litter box environment that will  provide ease of access and reduce anxiety for you and your cat
• how to end aggression in multiple-cat households and help your cats coexist peacefully

Is it impossible to train a cat? Not anymore! Your days of yelling and tearing your hair out in the wake of the latest household “cat-astrophe” are over. In this fascinating and indispensable book, the Cat Whisperer takes you inside the mind of a feline to explain why members of one of the world’s most inscrutable species act the way they do—and how you can convince them to change their behaviors for the sake of your peace of mind . . . and theirs.

From Booklist
As one of the nation’s leading cat behaviorists, Nagelschneider provides excellent information on feline behavior and the effects of changes in the feline environment. She wrote the book that she felt cat owners need, as well as the one she always wanted to read. Starting with the basic tenet of “no punishment, no reprimand,” the author then defines her C.A.T. plan: Cease the unwanted behavior (make the behavior or its location less attractive); Attract the cat to a desirable behavior, location, or time (redirecting the behavior); and Transform the territory (change specific physical properties). One of her main pieces of advice for any training or retraining of cats is to go very slowly, at the cat’s preferred pace. Using the author’s methods, readers learn how to successfully introduce (or reintroduce) cats, curb feline aggression, retrain cats who eliminate outside their litter boxes, reduce excessive meowing, stop destructive behaviors (like scratching furniture), and curb compulsive behaviors. Full of “think like a cat” advice, Nagelschneider’s work will make for happier human-feline households. --Nancy Bent

Too narrowly focused, redundant; Emphasis on managing multi-cat households, elimination, spraying
By Douglas B. Moran
This review is based on a pre-publication copy: some illustrations are missing, incomplete "Endnotes" (footnotes + references), Index in progress, ... Page numbers may change.

This is an uneven book. If based on just the first part, I wouldn't recommend it, maybe even recommend against it. However, starting around page 130, the book becomes more and more worth reading, and by page 200 the density of useful advice is such that I would definitely recommend if your problem falls within the focus of this book (details follow).

Litter box and spraying issues dominate the book. This is not surprising because this is what is most likely to be serious enough to drive people to hire a professional behaviorist.* What is surprising is the paucity of useful anecdotes I would have expected the author to have acquired during such consultations. The result is prescriptive advice on these topics that doesn't go much beyond what one is likely to have encountered in run-of-the-mill books on cat care. And that advice is repetitive. It isn't until late in the book that I encountered non-trivial treatments of other issues.

The book's coverage is also heavily oriented to the interactions of cats within a household.** The author lives in a household with six cats and three people and many of her accounts seem to be of households with more cats than people. My experience is that the quality and intensity of interactions between cats and their people is very different in households with no more than one cat per cat-person (my situation and bias), although what is cause and what is effect is debatable. Although the book's title and description imply a close connection between the author and cats, what is actually written felt very detached, almost clinical. Similar to her describing lodgers rather than family members.

The author's attitude about cats falls into the school of "cats just are" and "cat have staff" and regards those who see their cats as engaging in various intelligent behaviors as anthropomorphizing. I have a background in cognitive sciences and have had a series of tightly bonded cats (one at a time) and strongly disagree. This attitude may be a turn-off for some readers, but the bigger problem is that it severely limits the book in suggesting how to approach and understand a problem behavior. And although some of the promotions of the book indicate that its approach is to help you get in the mindset of the cat, there is very little of that. The dominant approach is prescriptive advice for owner. FYI because the presentation style of the advice may influence how well you absorb it.

The book gives the very useful reminder that in the wild, cats are prey as well as predators and that considerably shapes their behavior. But then the book fails to provide more than a scattered perfunctory treatment of what that means. Similarly, the book provides statements about the importance of play that are no better than perfunctory. You will likely find as-good or better in most cat-care books.

The treatment of territoriality is a decent introduction, but less than I hoped for. It gives an interesting anecdote of a client who put tape down the middle of a hallway eliminating conflict between cats passing each other (pg 165). But there is no follow-up of similar tips, much less any intuitions on why this might have worked. The book only briefly mentions that some cats see people as key territory. My experience is that this is often a major issue.

Why my negative reaction to the first part of the book? If you have already have a cat and have read another cat-care book, I suspect that the value-added of this portion is not enough to justify the investment in this book (time and money). If this is your first cat-care book, it may not be effective making its points -- it doesn't have enough organization, discipline and efficiency. Exception: It drills home about the importance of litter boxes: number, cleaning and distribution.

What is different about the latter portion of the book: It is organized more like what you would expect from a professional consultant: lists of alternatives, example analyses, action plans, ... But this is useful only if your situation falls within the focus of the book.

My rating of the book is based on asking how helpful this book would have been to me or to various friends who were having cat problems. Unfortunately, those problems were poorly addressed in this book. That wouldn't have been a mark down for the book if its description had let me know whether it was a good fit.
----
* Elimination problems are 40-75% of problems leading to a behaviorist (pg 172).
** In a household with cats, average is 2.5 (pg 128)

---- Examples ----
My current cat is a rescue who was well socialized in the sense that he immediately bonded to me, but he came with such a severe biting problem that he was being written off as unadoptable. Although the book's suggested treatments are not that different from what I did, its different explanation of the situation might have caused me to give up on him. His biting during petting was not from being over-stimulated (the book), but rather his insistence on grooming me -- those bites were just too-rough grabs that you see when cats groom themselves or others. However, the book claims that cats don't do things to please their people. Based on the book, a reader would likely have classified the rest of his biting as "status-related aggression". However, my diagnosis was that this is a very small part, and it was not dominance (I'm the boss of you), but rather trying to communicate boundaries. Most of the biting seemed to be driven by anxiety: memory of his abandonment and reaction to pending separations. The book discourages you from thinking in these terms. My cat is also very high energy, needing lots of exercise and play, and some of the biting was him trying to provoke play. Yet the book associates play aggression only with kittens, and my cat is a 4 year-old adult and I have seen it in even "senior" cats.

The neighbor from whom I got my current cat asked me to look at another "biter" that she was fostering. He was very friendly, but would bite almost immediately upon being petted. Again, the conventional diagnosis was that he was "over-stimulated", but this time what it was was under-stimulation. I picked him up and started giving him a vigorous head rub and he relaxed into my lap with a deep purr. No problem. Even after an extended petting session. Further experimentation confirmed that when petting wasn't strong enough he was using grabbing with his teeth as a prompt. If you have watched cats grooming each other, this is one of the behaviors that you see. As a cat owner, you need to know to distinguish biting from grabbing with the teeth, but this part of cat behavior is not part of this book.

There are a range of claims in the book that are contrary to my experience. Some are harmless, for example, that cats are purely solitary hunters (pg 126). This is mostly true, but I know of multiple instances of biological brothers that routinely hunt together. Then there was the claim that cats don't become territorial until they are adults (age 2). My previous cat was adopted as a 4-month old kitten ("raised underfoot" from a neighbor's litter) and within a week it was challenging older, larger cats using aggressive threat displays that I associate with territoriality (these instances were harmless because I had the kitten under very close supervision). How the reader of the book might have diagnosed the situation? I have no guess.

The book cautions against using a laser pointer for play because it frustrates the cat by denying it a kill-bite. While I know some cats for which the kill-bite is integral to play, I know many more for which it isn't. There are some cats that focus on "counting coup" -- they charge the lure and barely touch it with their paw or mouth before darting off to set up the next attack on it. Other cats focus on simulating using their paws to stun the prey, either a hard landing or a rapid combination of swats. And many cats that do a combination of these. I would have expected the book to give a sense of the diversity of such play.

I'm of two minds for this product
By Jeannette Belliveau
Here's the negative about this book:

* Too much time establishing the author's bona fides as a purported "cat whisperer" based on hours of observation of semi-feral cats
* Disorganized editing, the flabbiness in terms of time spent at the beginning rambling around on the author's credentials continues throughout the book
* A lack of staged responses to problems, such that for example, the advice given to address the introduction of a new cat to an existing cat household is mindblowingly complex.

Here's the positive about this book:

* I think if you really are about to give up on a problem cat due to elimination issues or fighting with other cats, you will find the level of detail here (if you skip right to the middle or back of the book) to address your issues.
* The author makes clear the need for daily playtime with your cats and that you need not always respond to their meows with food -- which I have been guity of. More and more, I now brush the cats or play with them instead of feed them when they interact, even if it's in their feeding area.
* Given her emphasis on toys and play time with cats, I went out and bought some new toys for my cats and try to spend more time with them each day playing with a shoelace that they like. She says they like to plan an attack out based on watching their prey, so it's best not to dangle a lace or wand toy in front of them but move away as a real prey object would.

This is useful detail! I just wish (disclosure: I'm a real-life editor) a tough editor had gone through this book as well as a graphic designer to give it more of an information "pop" than is currently present.

Bottom line: Four stars for information presented that certainly is useful -- if you can find it. One star deducted because this is *not* a book you will want to read cover to cover to learn all the basics of cat behavior and problem solving.

This book is a great gift; for owners and cats alike!
By feemeister
I would say this book is a must have for cat lovers and owners. There is so much GREAT information in this book! There are lots of things in here that will help you in ways you didn't expect; things you will start to understand that you didn't before.

Her main goal in this book is to help owners not to have to give away or euthanize their cats. It concentrates on things the owner can do to change the cat behavior. Actually, it's pretty much behavior modification for cats, through owner actions!

Some of the cures in here are involved and time consuming. Some are impractical for me, as I live in a singlewide mobile home (and have multiple cats), and don't have room to do some of the things she talks about (and thank goodness I don't need to). But people in doublewides or houses and in many apartments, shouldn't have such a problem. Additionally, owners of one or two cats won't be so challenged.

She is very able to explain the behaviors to you, so you can see them from the cats angle. An example is cats who won't use their litter boxes, when it is not a physical reason. I had no IDEA there could be so many different causes, and so many remedies to try. And she really walks you thru everything step by step, and does not leave you hanging, or forget to finish explaining something, as I have seen some authors do. She really does a superb job on explaining the causes as well and the solutions.

There is also very involved information on cats that don't get along (a form of them being reintroduced gradually and nonthreateningly) which is extremely well set out. However, it is not a quick thing; it takes time and effort. But in the end all in the family should be very happy with each other and get along well.

She also goes into irritating behaviors (such as unwanted meowing concerts in the middle of the night, etc.). There are lots of other problems and cures in the book; I just touched on a few of them here.

I am very lucky in that my babies don't have the problems in here, but I am really grateful to have this book in case any of them develop. It has also shown me I need to play with the cats more often than I do, and feed them more often than I do, in order to keep them at their happiest; I have tried things she recommends for that, and they are working out well!

I adore all cats, and I am really glad that this lady is writing books that will help them. Also, I hope that she will write another book soon, about her stories of her kitties (and other animals) as well as cases she has had. I found those stories extremely interesting. However, in this book she was concentrating on helping out with problems; I would love to read more about her experiences. She is a very gifted storyteller as well as cat behaviorist, so I really hope she will give us more of her stories in the future. I HIGHLY recommend this book for cat lovers!

How to Taste: A Guide to Enjoying Wine, by Jancis Robinson

Hailed by Jerry Shriver in USA Today as “the woman who makes the wine world gulp when she speaks,” Jancis Robinson created in How to Taste a classic for connoisseurs of all levels and the first introduction of its kind to focus on practical tasting exercises. Now fully revised and updated, Robinson's renowned guide proves once again that learning about wine can be just as engaging as drinking it.

What better way to learn about wine than to taste it?

Written in Robinson's trademark accessible style, the new How to Taste features thoroughly updated vintages and producers as well as up-and-coming wine regions and styles. Incorporating wines that are both easily obtainable and reasonably priced, Robinson's lessons are separated into complementary portions of theory and practice to help you both learn and taste your way to wine expertise.

One of the world's best-loved authorities on wine, Robinson explains first how to get the most out of the flavor of your wine and food, and then about specific grapes and the wines themselves. By the time you finish the book, you will have learned how to recognize the most popular grape varieties from Chardonnay and Riesling to Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, and why a good sparkling wine is always better than cheap champagne. You will discover how to judge sweetness, acidity, and fruitiness as well as the difference between the length and the weight of a wine. You will also be given practical advice for dealing with wine in the real world: how to choose from a wine list, organize your own wine tastings, and pair wines with specific foods.

From the armchair to the wine shop and back to the table, How to Taste will transform anyone on any level into a confident connoisseur who can leave faltering sips behind and have fun along the way.

Whether Montessori or Merlot, kindergarten or Cabernet, the importance of a good instructor during the formative years is crucial. That's why newcomers to the world of wine could do a lot worse than having a corkscrew in one hand and a copy of Jancis Robinson's How to Taste in the other. A revision of 1983's Masterglass and published in the U.K. under the superior title Jancis Robinson's Wine-Tasting Workbook, How to Taste is a primer by a certified Master of Wine and star of the PBS series Jancis Robinson's Wine Course. From acidity to Australian Shiraz, oak to Oregon Pinot, Robinson delivers chapters of information and theory, intermingled with shaded "Practice" exercises, presented in a style as off-dry as one of the author's beloved Rieslings (the tannin in a lesser vintage Barolo is "like sucking on a matchstick"). Sometimes tuition at Jancis U. runs high: the lesson on sugar/acid balance culminates with expensive Sauterne "Practice." And even if Robinson risks, by dropping words like "charred" and "umami" early in the book, sending novices back to tear open a fresh box of Franzia, vinous virgins are encouraged to stick with it. By the time they get to the glossary at book's end, they'll be identifying wines at blind tastings with professional accuracy--which, Robinson encouragingly reveals, and she ought to know, is about 50 percent. --Tony Mason

A must read for anyone learning about wine!
By A. Alvarado
As the title suggests, this book is certainly a 101 course in how to taste so that you can increase the pleasure of your wine tasting experience. Nearly half of the book is dedicated to how we taste and although this much coverage may initially seem a bit over the top, every page offers new information. If her writing style were described as a wine, I'd say it is a crisp, clean, beautifully aged, full-bodied, well balanced wine, seasoned with a warm toastiness, and hints of dark fruit. She's direct and uses an instructional and educational format, yet injects humor at every turn, while offering the reader practice exercises to fully comprehend the information. Her wealth of knowledge on the subject is evident in her details as she covers every aspect of tasting, examples of how it relates to wine, the flavors in wine, what causes those flavors, how the flavors compare to foods, the grapes that will taste different in each terroir, and how the wine-making process will further influence the flavor of the wine.

She begins with taste, at its most basic level, describing the art and science of it. We do it every day, just as we breathe, without awareness, and yet, once we become fully aware of how our senses react to different flavors and aromas, we begin to have a deeper appreciation of the experience. Right from the beginning, she offers a practical exercise to try to demonstrate this. Have someone blindfold you and offer you different foods with the same texture to see whether or not you can tell them apart (slices of a plum and nectarine, for example). Then try it with similar bodied wines (a merlot and a cabernet sauvignon, for example) to see if you can identify the variety.

Our senses of sight, smell, and taste are so closely interconnected that when we consciously engage all three, the taste experience is heightened. In fact, I now have a deeper appreciation of these senses and for my father's unfortunate condition. He lost his sense of smell in an accident when he was young and whenever he eats, he has to wait until the food reaches the back of his throat before he can tell you if it pleases him. I never understood this until I tried the exercise Jancis suggested. Hold your nose while eating something you're familiar with. So I tried this and was surprised that I couldn't taste the flavor, even as it reached the back of my throat. So, I suppose the flavor experience is different for us all. Still, I couldn't help but feel sad for my father because he's unable to enjoy the full flavor of foods. Anyone who has ever had a cold can probably relate to how tasteless foods are when their nasal passages are blocked.

Jancis elaborates on the importance of sight, smell and taste and how each carries a different message to our brains. The first thing we notice is either how something looks (how appetizing it appears) or how it smells (when walking by a restaurant or my mom's kitchen...yum). This desire builds within us and creates an expectation of how great the food will taste, our mouths begin to water and we can almost taste it at this point. Notice what happens when we actually take a sip or a bite. "Different substances give off different vapors" (14). Think of wine versus bread, or steak on the grill versus a bowl of sugar. The strongest vapors you can taste without actually putting them into your mouth. Alongside this lesson, she illustrates the sweetness in wine, the sugar content, and what that does to our mouth. There's a practice exercise to determine where on your tongue you experience this best, so you'll notice the amount of sweetness the next time you try a wine. Throughout the book, she teaches you something about taste, (such as this lesson on sweetness), then she relates it to wine, and includes some very useful charts divided into red and white categories.

The major tastes (acidity, sweetness, salt, and bitterness) are described in depth and how balance in wine is important and signifies quality. If we stop to notice, different parts of our tongue (front, back, center, and sides) are sensitive to these different tastes. She elaborates on the wines that exhibit these flavors and points out which regions do this superbly. She compares the regional differences in wine-making and terminology. Other flavors such as tannins, astringency, weight, alcohol content, dryness, and cleanliness are covered at length. She includes bad aromas and flavors that you may encounter in wine such as oxidation, sulfur, TCA, reduction, carbon dioxide, and volatile acidity. The quality of a wine can be determined by its cleanliness, balance, and length and all senses should be engaged during this.

Jancis explains what to look for visually (deposits, range of color in reds and whites, lighter at the rim, and legs), aromatically (and that one should avoid strong perfumes, after shaves and food smells to properly taste a wine) and finally when you taste the wine, what temperature it should be served and what foods (mints, gum, vinegar) to avoid to fully enjoy it. Guidelines for storing, chilling, serving, decantering, choosing the right glasses, spitting (or not to), and keeping notes are provided.

There is an entire section on the predominant grapes, their nuances, their distinguishing flavors, their attributes, what regions/climates they grow best in, regional differences/names, if it is used for blending, whether or not it is common practice to age it, and what vessel to age it in. The last section explains how to pair wine with food and as we discussed in class, the old rules are thrown right out the window. One rule to follow is a full-bodied wine would pair well with full flavored foods, and a lighter wine with lighter foods. Some of the old standards apply where the acidity in a white wine would best pair with seafood and a full-bodied red with a steak, but since it's a matter of taste, these are just recommendations.

Jancis' charts, exercises, and tasting glossary at the end provide us with the right amount of information to make the most out of our tasting experience. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand wine and get the most pleasure out of drinking wine. I now have a deeper understanding of the subject and as a result, a deeper appreciation of our senses and of wine tasting.

Great for the wine newbie!
By Every Shining Thing
This is a really great primer on wine, and I would think it would be especially good if you have the time and inclination to try all of the "homework". (I drink very little wine, so I've not really been a great student of the book, but it's interesting to read when I'm trying something new!) The only little disappointment was that the edition of the book I bought was not the same as the edition I had checked out of my library - it's smaller, so the images and text are smaller than the book I first read on loan. However, it is a newer edition, so at least the information is up to date.

Taster's Choice
By Bevetroppo
See the Amazon review dated September 29, 2001 for an excellent treatment of this book.
Since I first became interested in blind wine tasting almost 25 years ago, I have searched for a book that provided a complete and authoritative guide to describing the taste of different wines and grapes-a reference point or sounding board, if you will, against which to calibrate my own impressions. Never mind that the essence of blind tasting and the apprehension of quality depend on forming your own innate vocabulary of scents and flavors. There have been many times when I have struggled, and have just wanted an expert to tell me what the heck a textbook Crozes-Hermitage, for example, is supposed to taste like.
Jancis Robinson's Guide To Wine Tasting is an excellent contribution to this subject for beginners. I didn't realize until around page 150 that the book had originally been published in 1983 under the somewhat unfortunate title, Masterglass, but I think we can forgive her this youthful indulgence. Because over time, she has truly become the heir apparent to mantle of most prolific British wine commentator, eclipsing my other English heroes Michael Broadbent, Hugh Johnson, and Clive Coates. With multiple books, a TV show, videos, a weekly column, a new DVD and a website ... she is, to paraphrase wine newcomer Howard Stern, the Queen of All Wine Media.
This book systematically lays out the factors that contribute to the taste of a wine, and how to appreciate them. It follows the model of a "wine course," in that each chapter combines theory and practice, the practice consisting of specific instructions of what wines to try that best illustrate the principles being taught. Like all good teachers about wine, she staunchly advocates blind tasting as the key to developing your own wine appreciation faculties. Just keep in mind that to pursue the practice, you'll need a willing accomplice to pour the disguised wines for you so you can really benefit.
Two things make this slender volume particularly noteworthy and a valuable contribution for amateurs of all stripes. First, Jancis is one of the most democratic and unintimidating wine writers on the planet. She goes out of her way to make beginners feel at ease, correctly observing that in many cases the less you know, the more accurate your initial impressions can be. She also makes it clear that even experts routinely embarrass themselves at this game, which is half the fun and often offers a better learning experience than actually guessing correctly. No one interested in learning more about wine appreciation will feel condescended to within the pages of this book.
Second, I give Jancis a lot of credit for being willing to describe specific flavors that derive from major grapes, variations in winemaking practice, and geographical differences, since that is after all why I most wanted to read the book. It is not as detailed or quite as specific as I would like, but it does an admirable job nonetheless and can refresh the core knowledge of a more experienced taster just as well as empower a newcomer.
I don't have much to criticize about the book. There's a very bad typo on page 47 where Brunello di Montalcino is described as coming from the nebbiolo grape (instead of the sangiovese clone, brunello), but this is correctly stated later on. I also think the selection of some of the second-tier grapes she characterizes is a little odd (why even bother with trebbiano if she says it's undistinguished, when she ignores other Italian white grapes that make wonderful wines). Finally, there are a few pages whose layout contains very little information (I counted one with fewer than 50 words) and since this isn't an art book, it gives the appearance of padding.
Nevertheless, this book provides all the basics of what you need to know to not just enjoy tasting wine, but to actually appreciate it.

The Runaway Princess, by Kate Coombs

"A dragon darkens our dells. A witch haunts our woods. Bandits roam our moors" . . . King Stromgard swept on. "In the tradition of so many monarchs, I offer my daughter's hand in marriage and half my kingdom to the prince who can rid us of these evils, restoring peace and prosperity to our realm."

And so the contest in the Kingdom of Greeve begins. But Princess Margaret is not your traditional princess. Meg firmly objects to her parents' giving her away, and she certainly has no intention of remaining in the tower where she is sequestered. Instead, she sets out to win the contest herself by enlisting the help of her good friend, her loyal maid, an eager guardsman, a young wizard, and a tenacious witch. Does Meg find her distinct place in the kingdom, or is she doomed to fulfill her royal duties?

Kate Coombs weaves a magical tale full of pesky princes, enchanted frogs, a beady-eyed scarf, and invisibility juice – a tale of wonder, but a story familiar to all who struggle to find their own place in the world.

The Runaway Princess is a 2007 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-7–Princess Meg, 15, has a problem. Her father, the king of Greeve, has issued a proclamation offering her hand in marriage to any prince who can defeat a dragon, a witch, and a hoard of local bandits. The princess isnt thrilled with this plan. After all, the witch is harmless, the dragon defunct, and the bandits steal from the rich and give to the poor. Unfortunately, because she objects so strongly, she is immediately sequestered to the tower until the contest is over. Fortunately, Meg knows how to get out of a difficult situation, and its up to her to warn the witch, help the bandits, and take care of a relatively innocent young dragon before some of the less-than-honorable princes wreak havoc on the kingdom. Coombss good-natured tale is as comfortable poking fun at established fairy-tale tropes as it is honoring them. Readers will have no difficulty rooting for Meg, and the story as a whole is a pleasurable read with amusing details and witty twists. Pair this rousing adventure with Gail Carson Levines Ella Enchanted (HarperCollins, 1997).–Elizabeth Bird, New York Public Library

From Booklist
In an attempt to replenish the treasury of Greve, King Stromgard offers his 15-year-old daughter Meg's hand in marriage to the prince who can rid the kingdom of a dragon, a witch, and some pesky bandits. The plan calls for Meg to be sequestered in a tower for the duration, a troublesome detail that she quickly circumvents with the help of several other palace teens. Together they rescue the dragon (a baby); warn the witch (receiving her help in return); meet a helpful young wizard; and discover that the bandits are really not as evil as everyone thinks. Coombs, who also wrote The Secret Keeper (2006), has created another strong heroine who eschews the trappings of her birth in the pursuit of truth, justice, and adventure. Reminiscent of Jean Ferris' Once upon a Marigold (2002) and M. M. Kaye's The Ordinary Princess (1984), this witty, humorous tale will be popular with fantasy buffs who enjoy takeoffs on fairy tales. Great Book!
By A Customer
Wow! What a great book. The Runaway Princess by Kate Coombs is a fun and exciting read. Meet Princess Margaret (Meg) of Greeve, the princess who didn't want to be a princess, Cam, one of her best friends, and apprentice gardener, and Dilly, Meg's other best friend, who also happens to be her maid. The story begins with Meg's father announcing that whoever rids the land of the three evils, The Dragon, The Witch, and The Bandits, shall win first place, the princess's hand and marriage, and become heir of the Kingdom of Greeve. Obviously, Meg is appalled, and tries furiously to end this long tradition. But, unfortunately her parents refuse, and lock Meg in a tower. This is definitely not the result Meg was looking for, and she wants out! With the help of several helpful persons, such as Cam and Dilly, she gets out. Thus begins the tale of the Runaway princess. Meg must travel the kingdom in hopes to win the contest herself; negotiate with a stubborn witch with a passion for amphibians (and the men they used to be), a baby dragon that comes under her care, a wizard in disguise, several nasty princes, a troop of bandits, and all the while pretend she is still in the tower! This book is similar to books by Gail Carson Levine such as Ella Enchanted, or, Fairest, though maybe for younger readers. I would recommend this book for ages 8-11, above that some of the writing may seem a bit easy to read, and less complex, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I loved this book, and would recommend it to anyone. It is a pleasurable read, one you would open on a rainy day, and not put down until you're done. The writing is enchanting, comical, and very descriptive, though at times it may seem a bit simple. But, the plot is witty and quickly changing. The end is sweet, if not a surprising, definitely not what I expected. As quoted from the end of the book, "Once upon a time, there was a princess who knew she meant for more than twirling her tresses and swooning." Enjoy!

An unadulterated fun
By Trang Nguyen
For a story that involves a handful of cliché fairytale tropes—a princess in a tower, an old witch living in the wood, a menacing dragon who breathes fire and snacks on princesses (or so the legend said), not to forget the mysterious bandits running amok doing bandit things—"The Runaway Princess" can't be further away from your stereotypical damsel-in-distress tales. It's not only a delightful and refreshing fairytale-inspired adventure but it also delivers an empowering message to young female readers about being proactive and breaking out of the mold (and also, that legends don't always have it right.)

Kate Coombs has created a colorful cast of characters who are relatable and/or convincing in a light-hearted manner. The antagonists’ antics might make you chuckle at times, but they're still despicable and rapacious in ways that rile you up inside. Meg, the princess heroine, is really likable with her unassuming disposition and penchant for adventure. She doesn’t always make wise or sensible decisions through her quest, but that is totally expectable from a young girl, and a heretofore-sheltered princess. Furthermore, the story nicely features assorted types of female characters—the wayward princess, the demure queen, the loyal maid, the resourceful farmer's daughter, just to name a few. In spite of their differences, they're all capable and more than to meet the eyes.

Another thing I love about this book is that none of the characters is extraneous; each has their own tasks and role. That Meg isn’t the sole savior of the day. The ultimate victory is a collaborated effort as every character owes up to their faults and takes to actions.

Coomb’s prose is simple yet humorous, genuine and emotive. Written with the right vocabulary for middle-school readers, the book has a witty sensibility that can win over adults who enjoy good storytelling in a wide range of literature.

There was a soft ache in my heart by the time I closed this book—the kind of ache you'd get from parting with a story you've grown fond of. Nonetheless, I was filled with contentment where the story has left me, with the way the closure whispers promises of future adventure for the heroine.

Fun, fun, fun!
By Savvy Consumer
I've been reading books to place on a summer reading list for my fifth graders. This one is by far my favorite pure fun book. I would highly recommend it to reluctant readers who have to read a longer book. While it's long in page length, the language is definitely easy to comprehend. I could easily see this as a very entertaining movie.... one to which they don't have to take a lot of artistic license like they did with Ella Enchanted. They completely lost the flavor of the book with that movie... but that's another story. The great part about being an elementary teacher is that you get to read books like this! They don't take long at all for an adult to read in this time-crunched world, and they are just as entertaining for us as they are for kids. Enjoy!
