Soon Morgan is dragged into a mystery surrounding a lost amulet, trolls, and a mysterious witch hell-bent on revenge who doesn't care if she hurts Morgan or any of her friends. As if that weren't bad enough, the man she has no memories of is completely charming but seems incapable of telling the truth about anything.

The Magician's Mistake is part of an urban fantasy series. Fans of The Dresden Files and The Lily Harper Series should enjoy this series.

Ok but won't purchase the next one.

I really liked the concepts for the character and this world, but the book was very very short. I checked and the next book in the series is a similar short length, so I won't be purchasing. These are really more novella length than novels. The writer has good ideas, but it would be better if she created a full book.

The chapter of a book was good I really enjoyed it

The chapter of a book was good I really enjoyed it! It was a good thing it was free for me as there would be no way I would continue to pay for each chapter of what should be 1 book. This author in my opinion is looking to scam her reading & line her pockets by putting out 1 chapter at a time and charging you for what a regular book would cost. if you have to pay for this series save your money.

A great first draft - a novel, not so much.

Interesting concept, lacking in execution - Unfortunately the writing is shallow and very by the numbers. The characters lack a distinctive voice and rarely sound like real people. The plot twists are a little worn out, if not tired and most readers of urban fantasy and fantasy in general will see them coming a mile away. The pacing is break-neck but sacrifices depth and character development and some twists and turns of the plot come out of the left field because they weren't properly established before, leaving the reader scratching his head. The MacGuffin is never treated as more than a plot device to drive on the story and character motivations appear to be little else than means to push forth the plot. All in all, a commendable first effort, which could have benefited greatly from an Editor and more revisions. It's a great first draft though and with a bit of tweaking and refining could be a fine addition to the urban fantasy genre. However, the reading excerpt of the second book has peaked my interest. I will check it out to see if the author has gotten rid of the kinks of the first book.

bought it because it was on my list of required reading. Was really glad to see it available for Kindle. Realized only later that it was a reference book. While I find it very interesting and roughly accurate. I can't say I agree with the definitions (which aren't always "definitions"). There is a fair amount of subjectivity to these terms and their use, but the author provide a pretty politicalized stance wherever possible.

a philosophical dictionary

Communication, Cultural and Media Studies does not address me. I wondered not finding the key concept as its subtitle says. After reading I understood it as a philosophical dictionary. It contains a lot of links to other philosophical articles and books. It can be taken as a library of links. If you want to understand what an image is, first you should concern with Annette Kuhns feminist article "The Power of the Image" and then John Hartley teaches you Platos arguments. At the end, an image is understood as "the objectification of self-knowledge for communicative purposes". In my opinion an image is an image - a non text object fixed on a material like paper or in a file and not the imagination. The most popular example of an image is a photograph. And everybody knows, photos play an important role in communication processes. Even amateur photos. In seconds they go round the world and tell us stories....

In some items I do not agree with the author:

1. Effects are described as results of manipulated reception. I'm coming now from a conference about "Digital Content Creation" - a failed description, too. 2007 the producers and the audience understand effects as special effects. By technical means, hard- and software images are produced which can not be photographed but have the look of a photograph.

2. Describing MP3 John Hartley seems not to use a MP3 player. He forgot that there are also other compression codecs, but MP3 is the best with respect to the relation of quality to file size. It was a great discovery of the German "Fraunhofer Institut für Integrierte Schaltungen" and not the discovery of Hacker, publishing "MP3: The Definitive Guide" in 2000.

3. Even the item on violence I would renew completely. If a human is killed - this is violence - and not a point of view depending on culture. Celebrating the new Bond film "Casino Royal" we have seen nearly 100 shots including violence. But we like it. Maybe we do not like it, but it gives excitement to the story. We relate to the hero and wish that he solves his problems directly. We give him the licence to kill. And then we wonder that our kids like to play games murdering virtual humans every minute. Confused sometimes about games and life. Becoming addictive for such games.

This book is described as a Tunisian crochet reference guide with, according to the back cover, over 400 stitches.

What I like:
There aren't many English language stitch guides available for Tunisian crochet, so it's mere existence is something I enjoy.

The stitches are organized into 16 sections (Basic Foundations; Double & Treble Stitches; Front Crossed Stitches; Back Crossed Stitches; Open Work & Lace; Shells, Fans, & Stars; Three Dimensional [Relief] Stitches; Cables, Ropes, & Braids; `Honeycomb' Combos; 2 Stitch Honeycomb Combos; Basket Weave Patterns; True Checkerboard Patterns; Vertical Stripe Patterns; Horizontal Stripe Patterns; Diagonal Stripe Patterns; Zig Zag Stripe Patterns; and High-Low Honeycomb Combos), making it easier to find stitches.

The book is spiral bound, so you can read and crochet at the same time.

There are many tips that would help a beginner to Tunisian crochet.

Stitch multiples are included so that you can easily adapt the stitches for a project of a different width.

What I don't like (or what's missing):
Most of the photos are grayscale and it is difficult to see stitch detail.

While there are photos of over 400 stitches, most of them are more like "recipes" than patterns (e.g., there will be pictures of 10 vertical stripes variations, and then on another page you will be given instructions about how to make a vertical stripe).

There is no discussion of finishing the final row of a Tunisian crochet project (sometimes called "binding off").

While the stitch pattern section is well organized, it can be difficult to find information in the rest of the book and some sections appear unedited.

There is no pattern difficulty rating.

There are no stitch symbols, only pattern abbreviations.

If you are a Tunisian crochet fanatic as I am, this is a guide you may want in your collection. Overall, the pictures are hard to see and there are no illustrations. Because the content isn't clearly organized, I don't think it is a suitable book for a beginner.

Don't bother

There are literally dozens of photos of supposedly different stitches in this book but they pretty much all look alike. Very poor black and white photos and confusing instructions. There are a few examples of finished work in color photos but nothing most of us would be interested in making. The single star I gave this book is for the cat in the color photos.

I have many books that either include instructions for, or that are devoted only to Tunisian Crochet. TC isn't difficult and there are many variations on the basic stitch. Sadly, this book did not teach me anything of significance and it would probably discourage a novice from delving any deeper in to the rich history and versatility of Tunisian Crochet.

Far far better than I could have written in a lifetime!

This book really hits the nail on the head. I've been struggling with custom controls for weeks searching every article on the web and all over Microsoft and MSDN. No place has demonstrated the depth of understanding anywhere near as well as Matthew MacDonald has done. Not only are there clear and to the point examples without getting bogged-down in some lengthy, arcane and mythical tasks, but the accompanying text describes the underlying 'why' that is almost more useful than the code. Every page has some exceedingly useful information. My project has been in C# but the translation from VB from the book to C# is a no-brainer (assuming you've written in both over the last few years).
I pride myself as a descriptive writer but this book is far better than I could have written myself. It is to the point and thorough. If were any better it would wake you gently in the morning and make your coffee.

Well worth the time to read it.

If you really need the information to make your applications just that next step better, this is a great book. It is not a quick and easy read, but it is well worth the time that it takes to thoroughly read through it. I'm an intermediate level programmer (at best) and this book has helped take my work to the next level of professionalism.
After you've read through it, and know what it contains, the excellent index will help you easily go back and find that little tidbit of information that you need.
I will be buying his book on WPF also. Nice job Mr. MacDonald.

Excellent Resource!

This book is full of simple tidbits for binding controls to data objects and custom objects. The examples are short and easy to follow so you don't get lost in the code. Matthew does not spend a lot of time explaining background code (specifically, using ADO) because this is not the forum for those topics. What you get is 1000+ pages of explanations and examples focused on the task at hand: binding data. He does spend a few chapters introducing you to the various objects, covering many not-so-common functions. I found myself thinking "Wow!! That's cool!" several times. I highly recommend this book!!
