Do Not Waste Your Time Or Money On This Book

I was expecting so much more from this book when I purchased it, I really enjoy reading books on positive thinking and self help book, and was hoping from new insight from this "classic" and well loved book. Being someone who is already very positive, I was highly disappointed in it though and the overall message of the only way to achieve a positive mental attitude is by completely putting all your faith into God, Jesus, and Christianity, read the bible and pray. There is way too much religion in this book and it real took away from what could have been a good book. it almost comes across that if you don't have religion or aren't Christian then you just can't form a positive mentality at all. There are some good points in the book, that I really wish Peale had gone into more depth on other than saying here is a bible verse or simply pray on the matter. If not for some of these good points I would have given this book one star. A lot of stories in here, that helped and hurt at the same time, again I feel Peale could have gone into more depth of the changes for people in instances without the all the religious parts. There are better books out there that don't come across as so preachy and religious, I'd recommend Napoleon Hill's Success Through A Positive Mental Attitude over this book.

I was given this book as a teenager with a sour attitude. It completely changed my life and I have retained a positive attitude for 60 plus years. Bought copies for my own kids as they approached adulthood. Recommended reading for all ages from adolescent to elderly men/women.

There's nobody in the "Tea Party", nor many elsewhere, who I can point at and show my grandaughter..."See, there's a Christian example, for you..." Where are the real, respectable statesmen, who'll live out their faith and apply biblical principles to their daily lives, at work and home and in all areas of their lives? We've never been perfect, I know...but, at least there was an effort made, to follow Christian ethics. There are few of these, in evidence, today. I might point to the books by Norman Vincent Peale, who wrote The Power of Positive Thinking which was and still is, an excellent source for anyone who needs a refresher course, in ethical Christian living, at home, work and/or play. Much in this book's, aimed at conducting oneself properly, in business dealings.

The most misunderstood book in political science

The famous median voter theorem represents three of them. The remaining 297 pages involve extensions, limitations and generalizations -- exactly the sort of thing that most critics think it lacks. In the end, the book is really about the problems of limited information rather than about a unidimensional spatial model.

I was assigned several chapters from this book to read for one of my political science classes. I can't say I've come across any other books like this that describe the nature of electoral politics and realignments when they occur.

My professor did mention that this book revolutionized just how we view the electoral process. A good read, one that I would recommend. Diagrams are useful.

Transcending celestial experience

An illuminating peek into the minds of Hawking, Einstein and other physicists on their attempts to explain the universe with mathematics and the laws of physics. Hawking wrote brilliantly to appeal to the masses like myself who only has rudimentary physics and maths as background. I love his use of pop culture like his mention of "back to the future" to make a point on time travel. While he did allocate a paragraph on the genesis of life on earth, the bulk of the book focused on out of this world theories on the universe like the Big Bang, the Big Crunch, Black holes, Even Horizons, Wormholes, Singularity, and Time travel. With dimensions of time measured by millions & millions of light years and temperatures in millions million degrees that governed the cosmic events, one could only imbibe such information with a pinch of salt and wonder. After all Hawking did admit that these are theories that can never be proven. Just as he admitted that it is impossible to fathom the mind of God. Neither could Hawking explain the complexity of human behaviour with mathematical formulae.

Heavy subjects, Well handled

Probably not to everyone's taste (though that's what he's famous for isn't it? making Physics understandable to the masses) Professor Hawking is a very interesting man who is refreshingly straightforward. I say its not for everyone because I have an engineering degree and understand the academic method, am familiar with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics so I find it fairly clearly written. But even so, Einstein's theories are not well understood even today.

Perhaps I like this book as much for how forthright he is about his life, how it has gone, and how its not necessary to be dealt the right "cards" to take advantage of what you have. The book is probably worthwhile for the one point he makes about how its been a blessing for him to be non-communicative (or rather severely communication challenged). He says straight up people leave him alone so he has time to think and prepare his hypotheses and write about them, something that he didn't have time to do when he could easily communicate. He's a very interesting human and has profound observations about the universe that do explain in greater detail than I ever previously understood. His descriptions of Black Holes are thought provoking.

You, too, can become an accidental physicist!

I read this book with my oldest son (13 almost 14 years old) and enjoyed it even more than when I first read it in the 90s. Stephen Hawking is a brilliant writer. His knowledge of his field (theoretical physics) is vast, deep, and emotional. His ability to distill complex ideas into accessable analogies rivals Richard Rhodes (who brilliantly describes Mad Cow Disease in Deadly Feasts and the atom bomb in Atomic Bomb), whom I consider to be the best in class for this ability. I had no appreciation for Dr. Hawkings' skill when I first read this book - probably because I skimmed it. :-)

This time around, my son and I read a chapter a day and discussed it, first with each other then including my husband, the resident Big Brain. Talk about rewarding! My experience with reading this book with my son has been so positive that we are looking forward to reading the Feynman Lectures together, this time with my husband, this fall. Who knows, I might become an accidental physicist. LOL

Dr. Staley has served as an editorial consultant for various peer-reviewed journals and sits on the editorial board for The Angle Orthodontist.

Neil T. Reske, M.A., also from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, teaches dental students, orthodontic residents, and pediatric dentistry residents the principles and techniques of laboratory appliance fabrication.

A touching story

This touching story explores what it means to be intersex, transgender and gender fluid. The two main characters are young and inexperienced, and at times are insecure with their identity. Cheryl hasn't made them flawless and this gives them a realistic quality.

Ari is eighteen, intersex, with elfin features, and according to Benji has "mercurial moods". Another character calls Ari a ‘Little Imp’ and he behaves as such during much of the story. Ari is energetic and over the top, blurting out whatever's on his mind, yet everyone who meets him can’t help but like him. Even Ari himself admits he is innocent and weird. Until now, he has been cocooned by his mother and grandmother. He comes across as immature and far from streetwise, and this results in Benji misunderstanding some of the things he says at first and also leads to trouble from others with upsetting consequences.

Despite all this, Benji falls for him within hours of their first meeting and is declaring his love and sharing intimate moments with Ari in the hotel bedroom during a UK Meet style conference. Ari and Benji met previously online through their writing connection, but hadn't confided many personal details with each other. Ari has been reluctant to publicly state his sex, but soon finds he is comfortable revealing his body to Benji. They focus little on their writing interests and more on their burgeoning relationship during the weekend. Little is made of their writing throughout the story and their careers are set to take a different path by the end of the story. The two guys, as that is what they identify as, help each other understand who they are and how they view themselves over the course of the story.

Cheryl’s love of writing fairy/fantasy stories comes across in the second half of the book, and in fact, the plot takes an unexpected turn and focuses less on the gender identity issue and more on family relationships and their future. Despite all the drama that takes place, Benji’s love for Ari shines through and the overriding message of the book is ‘just be yourself’.

Curious, intriguing read.

One of the more intriguing stories I have read in a long while, Ari is about an how the love bloomed between intersex author, Ari, and transgender Benji. They had been online mates and friends for quite some time and Benjie had always been curious what Ari looked like. Now that they meet for the first time in an author convention, Benjie realizes that Ari is not really the person he initially thought.

Because both men are special in their own ways, they are both insecure and thus manage to show the world a different persona. When Benjie sees how other authors rallied around Ari at a time of need, he realizes it does not matter Ari acts or looks the way he does, what matters is his sweetness and loving heart.

Ari as a read was very curious. This touches on a subject that confuse many. The way the other authors became protective mama bears shows just how tight this little community of LGBT romance writers really is. Benjie is seen as someone new so has to prove to one and all that he is a person to trust around Ari.

Although this was at times a heartbreaking read, the moments of levity more than made up for it. The antics only seen and heard in authors' conventions are finally placed on text and it is not hard to imagine just how chaotic those events can be. Chaotic in the best possible ways.

Compelling story

I first read Ari as a short story in the Stranded anthology and soon after found out Cheryl intended to expand it. Ari turned into a beautifully written novel, raising important issues in what gender and acceptance are concerned. Ari and Benji are to me the perfect couple. They make each other better, even if sometimes that means confronting difficult situations and having to revise their own opinions of themselves.
Despite the age of the characters and the fact Benji takes care of his little brother, this genuinely sounds more like a young adult than a new adult. The characters are discovering who they are, learning to love, taking on the world and the challenges it brings, and they are, for these two individuals, harsher than they are for most people their age. Especially for Ari.
I believe Cheryl has been very brave to keep writing this intersex-transgender couple. Each of them would have raised enough issues to tackle, more so in this pairing. Yet she took the challenge and wrote an amazing story on how we define gender and love. I have to say I know know a lot more on what intersex and transgender individuals have to deal with.
As always, a Cheryl Headford story comes at the cost of quite a few tears, but it’s always absolutely worth it!

Many of Higgins's thrillers have told one continuing saga, involving the efforts of Gen. Charles Ferguson (head of the British PM's "Private Army") and his staff to fend off various threats to queen and country. Here the timely challenge is Arab terrorism, but wobbly focus makes this a mediocre entry in a generally first-rate series. An attempt on the American president's life leads Ferguson—who alerted the Secret Service to the threat—and his main man, legendary hit man and former IRA enforcer Sean Dillon, to Josef Belov, an associate of Vladimir Putin (who appears in a cameo) and a Russian oil billionaire who's intent on world domination and who along the way is funneling would-be jihadists from Britain into terrorist training camps in the Middle East. Instead of concentrating on the promising terrorist angle, Higgins traces Dillon and Ferguson's pursuit of Belov and his goons, a race that leads to violent shootouts in Iraq and elsewhere. Ferguson takes a bullet, and Supt. Hannah Bernstein is seriously hurt. The story climaxes in a vengeful, bloody foray by Dillon and old sidekick Billy Salter into Belov's castle stronghold in Ireland. Higgins's action has always been clipped, but here some scenes are positively rushed, and there's much that's overly familiar. Still, the author's high-speed narration and the mesmerizing hard edges of heroes and villains alike should sustain fans' perhaps grudging interest.

Turns out the would-be assassin (who takes his own life rather than be apprehended) is part of a network of villains bent on causing as much terror and confusion as possible. Can Dillon and his American counterpart Blake Johnson bring the evildoers to justice? It's a standard Higgins plot, with standard Higgins characters, and fans of the novelist's previous thrillers will soon realize they are in familiar territory. The Higgins name will still attract an audience of devotees, but younger readers new to the genre are unlikely to see what all the fuss was about. Even veteran Higgins readers may find that too much of a once good thing has become tedious. David Pitt

I like how Higgins books end

I read book 13 and a few others by this author before receiving my Kindle as a gift. Now I order the books in the series in order. I like how Higgins books end. They do not continue. He is very adapt in bringing the reader into knowing each characters' personalities without being boring. I love Sean Dillon, Ferguson and each protagonist he introduces. I will read every book!

Fire the Ghostwriter!

All of these customer reviews are right on point. Let me say that I'm a huge Higgins fan, especially "Solo" and of course the Ferguson/Dillon volumes. I have all of his books displayed on my bookshelf back home, and whenever I'm home for the holidays i always take out Thunder Point and reread the first act - it's brilliant.

Which is why I'm so disappointed with Dark Justice! I read it in two days and have spent just as long trying to decide if the book even had a plot. Without giving anything away to those unfortunate enough waste their money on this book, there's a teaser on the jacket cover that doesn't materialize - and with the "climax" being so short and underdeveloped i'm pretty sure i didn't miss anything. the only person who "fell" was Mr. Higgins off my pedestal.

Shame on the esteemed author. He has a devoted legion of fans, myself included, and he's now mailing it in something terrible. I've seen cheesecakes with recipes that were more interesting - the First Act Dillon barfight, the revenge-motivating Second Act injury to a key character, and the Third Act convincing of Harry Salter that Billy can go on one more mission with Dillon - one can only hope that Higgins will run out of cliched castles in which to stage his "climaxes," but i'm starting to get the sense that we've seen it all before.

Needless to say, i returned the book to Borders - it has no place on my bookshelf! wildebeist@aol.com

As a Decade Fades went through nearly 30 drafts and took on many different forms in the process. While the final version is a mere 250 pages, the book was roughly 950 pages a year before publication, at its bloated zenith. It was a bleak time when I peered down at that near-1000-page stack and realized that an ending wasn't in sight. I knew that to find a meaningful ending, I would have to get rid of the excess.

Condensing the story down to its essence required me to jettison some 600+ pages, which turned out to be a gruesome, heartbreaking process. If you had 10 children, which six would you chuck overboard to spare the remaining four? (Wait, don't answer that.) But those murdered pages weren't for naught. They served as an important part of the process; they helped form the now final novel. Without the complexities of an almost 1000-page monstrosity, I wouldn't've had the stone from which I chiseled the final sculpture. I couldn't've found the beauty without the banality.

I spent many days laboring on the prose contained on these pages. The final draft was closely scrutinized by more than a dozen proofreaders and two professional editors. And at the end of the day, I can look myself in the mirror and know that I could not have written a better book than the novel I'm publishing today.

It's worth noting that As a Decade Fades is not a novel in the traditional sense. It is, more or less, a fragmented narrative of 24 short stories--some short, some long--segmented over three distinct sections. This feat was complicated to maneuver around, but I found it necessary to structure the book this way for a myriad of reasons that are hard to describe (if I could explain those reasons here, I probably would not've had to structure the book this way), but against my best judgment, I'll do my best to explain...

Although I consider myself a somewhat skilled fiction writer (I've written fiction appreciably longer than my well-known nonfiction), I do not think of myself as a natural novelist. Our post-MTV world is no longer a novelist's world. The world doesn't occur to me as a linear narrative; it's fragmented and broken, and it's up to us to put together the pieces of this flash-cut world as we see fit. Similarly, this book is not organized as a tidy linear narrative. It is fractured and parts of its plot are involuted and recursive and self-referential. Certain elements and plots are resolved in the traditional sense, while others are left without a neat little bow, and others still are left open to interpretation. The closer you read, the more questions you may have. But such is life.

Each of the book's 24 stories functions on its own. Thus, any one story can be read as a standalone piece, and a particular meaning or lesson gleaned from that single story. When combined, however, these stories work together to form a larger narrative, relating complex concepts that likely aren't apparent when the stories are read individually.

The way we read--particularly the way we read novels--is changing, and this book is my attempt to participate in that transformation. As a Decade Fades is a reasonably difficult book; it is challenging, but it also has a more significant payoff than, say, a blog or a self-help book or even narrative nonfiction. I wrote this book with this in mind: I want the reader to do some work, and in exchange for said work, there is a greater payoff.

As a Decade Fades is contains a certain amount of grammatical prestidigitation, and thus it is not meant to be read like a freshman college assignment. Much of the syntax is meant to take on the brain-voice as you get closer to the consciousness of a particular character (viz., I want to preserve an oralish, tumbling-words, out-loud feel to the work). Hence, you will often find omitted commas, long run-on sentences, extreme use of polysyndeton, passive construction, progressive tenses, unconventional compound contractions (e.g., "wouldn't've," "I'd've," and "y'all'ren't"), compound words that aren't real words (e.g., "livingroom," "coffeetable," "bumpersticker"), paragraphs beginning with compound conjunctions (e.g., "And but so"), and other intentional grammatical faux-pas in the text. These devices are used to advance the story in a more meaningful/realistic way--i.e., used for your benefit, not necessarily mine. Stated in plain English, I basically pretty much write how I talk.

Because this book is about a musician, and much of it has to do with his writing process, I wanted to structure the book a lot like an album with a bunch of individual tracks (see #2 above).

With all that said, ultimately, this book is a novel, albeit a different kind of novel, one that welcomes literary fiction readers as well as people who don't read fiction at all. It was written in a way in which anyone can read it, tweeze from it their own meanings, and relate to the emotions of its characters. It is an emotion-filled book, and it is my intent, if anything, to connect with readers via these emotions.

Depressing

The story of a discontented, misguided, troubled and unhappy man who battles with his past and his hopes for the future. I found myself sinking into despair along with the main character (Jody) as his life falls to pieces. What irked me about him was his apathy, self-pity and neediness. I finished the novel nowhere near as hopeful as Jody, unconvinced that the answers he had found would satisfy him.

Ironically overwritten

Unfortunately, I found this book to be full of problems that made it difficult to appreciate the story. Parts of it were so over-written, purple, and self-indulgent while other parts were banal at best and pedantic and condescending at worst (the two page explication on African-American Vernacular English comes to mind...)

Also, and I know this is nit-picking but author's fondness for beginning sentences with "And but..." really annoyed me and distracted from the story every time it was used. I'm all for the creative use of language but the creativity has to actually work.

It's not that Joshua Fields Millburn is untalented. I think he just needs more, and perhaps a higher caliber of feedback, on his work if he's going to get beyond some of these habits. A healthy dose of ruthless-writers'-workshopesque-criticism might help him immensely. But kudos to him for working so hard.

Good but not Great

I read this book using the Kindle for PC software. I say this because as a non tech-geek I have to wonder if the editing process is compromised on e-books. Before my complaints tho, I will start with the good news.

Promoted as a journey from one's past and getting over losses it holds true to course. But WOW, is it dark. Which in hindsight, life is. When life takes turns for the worse, its not great and not fixed the way TV and the movies fix it.

I found it refreshing to have that different outlook on life.

I also found it refreshing in having Jody described from the perspective of 3 different characters - Jody, the Boy, the Troubled Man. We all go through phases in life. Our self (i.e. Jody) is there through all of it, but we do have an alter ego (the Boy or the Troubled Man) for extended periods. Thanks for highlighting it in this unique way as it is what we do in life.

Now for the not good news. The editing of the book missed far too many potential fixes. Some outlined below. I discovered numerous contradictions and some outright errors.

Two passages describes Jody's post high school years. Both lead with 'After High School, Jody moved from Midvale to Dayton with ...". There must be more than these standard 10 words to describe this event. In one passage it describes Jody being with his brother and his best friend (p 78) in the other it describes Jody being with his two best friends (p 100). This is an inconsistency, and when did he get a brother? It is only briefly mentioned that he considered one of his best friends as his brother.

Throughout the book Jody speaks in very short sentences. Almost one word answers to deep questions. And then in one section he speaks in paragraphs during a conversation with Wes. This inconsistency is not believable given all that we know of Jody. And in this passage he starts paraphrasing everthing with 'Like', after not having done so anywhere else.

As a Canadian, it is down right poor research to describe my country as having 'thirteen providences' (p 178). In fact it has 10 provinces and 3 territories. I can overlook lumping all 13 in to one, but to call them providences????

3/4 of the way through the book, Jody appears to be on the path to a new life. He meets Amy and Asia and at that point he is not interested in drinking and possibly in not smoking anymore. Flip a few more pages and he is popping pills. Not framed as a relapse, but just something he would be doing any day of the week. This is not believable.

As my review title states, it is a good book, but not great. I might have been miffed if I had to pay the $15 for it.

Poor Guidebook but a Good Question Collection

I am not blasting this book - I am giving you a rating based on the expectation that the description of this book sets. It does not live up and you are bound to be disappointed. However, it is actually a valuable book but you need to be aware of what you are buying and probably how to use it best when you buy it:

As a pure guidebook - 1 star
As a question collection - 4 stars

What You Will Find Inside:
28 Critical reasoning questions
31 Reading comprehension questions
110 Sentence correction questions
107 Problem solving questions (only 7 of which cover combinations and probability)
37 Data Sufficiency questions
100 + questions in the online question bank

***** CONS *****
* No review of math principles or grammar rules. This book assumes that you have gone through the Kaplan's main GMAT book. If you need help with basics look into getting the Math or Verbal Workbooks before getting this one.
* Illogical structure. Instead of the typical approach of providing a rule and then questions to practice that rule on, this book just lists questions in each of the sections. All of the valuable information and tips are scattered around the explanations section. The book assumes you will read/review explanations for every question. In defense, the main point is often emphasized, so they are not too hard to find.
* Question difficulty. Fewer than 50 people per year score 800 on the GMAT, and most of the lucky guys get past 700. To appeal to a broad audience, Kaplan designed this book at a 650/700-level
* Math section is fairly easy and lacks meaningful practice in advanced subjects such as probability, combinations, or coordinate geometry, statistics. If these are your weak areas, you should look elsewhere
* No Integrated Reasoning

***** PROS *****
* The book does what it was supposed to do - provide advanced selection of questions, giving the necessary practice with relevant questions. Though Kaplan's questions are not one-for-one official GMAT questions, I found them fairly close overall. I also liked the explanations - they were very detailed
* Good verbal section with valuable RC practice; huge selection of SC's
* Good quality publishing and paper; good layout
* Price - I thought it was worth every penny :)

Bottom Line: This is not a guidebook or a book to start with - if you need to get better in a certain question type, then get it but don't expect it to be sufficient to give you the background often needed to score 700+.

I studied the 800 and Kaplan Premier book and was able to get a 730. They lay the problems out and go into great detail about the answers. Good luck on the GMAT!

GMAT prep strategy

I have been been really busy with work and neither did I have too much time to study for GMATs, nor an extra grand to spend on a prep course. I needed above a 700 and I know from SAT practice that the prep courses are geared for students aiming for the mid 600s as the goal.

At least for me, I used the Princeton Review Cracking the GMAT (2006 edition) as a starter to familiarize myself with the test.

I think the 10th edition official guide by GMAC is a a great transition. Honestly, though, the CD was much more useful since it familiarized me with the actual computer format of the exam (although the CAT part of it is questionable - and be careful about doing too many practice questions from the book or the CD sice you might see some recylce on your 2 practice exams).

However, the best preparation is the GMAT 800 from Kaplan - it's not too great on the strategies, but if you learn by example like me, it's perfect since the examples are challenging and written for somebody aiming for above 93 percentile. I can't speak too much on the quant section, but the verbal section is awesome.

It has a great section on sentence correction which I found to be incredibly useful in improving my score. I really feel that by going through all the verbal questions, I learned the fundamental grammer that GMAT requires for a good score.

I was scoring on the practice in the mid 600s, and taking two days off work to completely go through the verbal section of this book was the key to getting me a 750 on the exam
