Shackled, by Tom Leveen

From author Tom Leveen comes a taut, suspenseful novel about a girl’s abduction that leaves her best friend emotionally paralyzed, until a chance encounter points her toward the truth…and a terrifying new danger.

Sixteen-year-old Pelly has a master plan. After years of therapy, medication, and even a stint in a mental hospital, she’s finally ready to re-enter the world of the living. Pelly has been suffering from severe panic attacks ever since her best friend, Tara, disappeared from a mall six years ago.

And her plan seems to be working, until an unkempt girl accompanied by an older man walks into the coffee shop where she works. Pelly thinks she’s seen a ghost, until the girl mouths “help me” on the way out, and Pelly knows she’s just seen Tara.

Too shocked to do anything, Pelly helplessly watches Tara slip away again as she steels herself against a renewed spiral of crippling anxiety. But rather than being overcome by anxiety, Pelly feels more energized than she has in years. Determined to track down enough evidence to force the police to reopen Tara’s file, Pelly’s master plan takes a turn for the dangerous.

Pelly decides she cannot be shackled by her past—and the anxiety, fear, and grief that comes with it—any longer if she wants to save Tara. But in seeking answers through whatever means necessary, she’ll come face-to-face with true evil. And not all the shackles are in her head…

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—This psychological thriller follows Pelly, a 16-year-old girl whose world was shattered when her best friend was kidnapped years earlier, presumed long dead. The trauma has left her stunted, unable to move on, and marked by panic attacks and a habit of cutting herself to relieve the pressure. While Pelly is working at a coffee shop, an older man walks in with a girl in tow—a girl who resembles her best friend Tara, who was kidnapped years earlier, who mouths the words "help me." After police and loved ones tell her she cannot have seen her friend, Pelly questions her own sanity and her paranoia deteriorates her mental state. She cannot let it go and obtains clues about the man's identity, which lead her into a claustrophobic, unexpectedly charged third act. The prose is tight and the dialogue lends emotion to the character's mental state, properly complementing this plot-driven setup. Leveen effectively balances the line between gritty crime story and psychological thriller, while not drifting into areas too lascivious or gory for a YA audience. VERDICT A chilling tale of suspense that will capture readers of every stripe.—Brian Hoff, Elmwood Park High School, IL

Review
"The story is short and fast-moving, and suspense builds quickly as Pelly puts herself in increasingly dangerous situations with only half-baked plans for getting out of them. Pelly's anxiety and strategies for managing her mental health--cutting herself, snapping a rubber band, smoking--are well-integrated into her character; this is a book about a person not an issue. ... Simple but suspenseful. " -- Kirkus Reviews, 1 May 2015

Maci and Zoe's Review
By Maci and Zoe Read Books
When I read the back of this book, I got chills, thinking about the potential of this book. I really hoped that it would be pulled off because it had such potential. When I first started to read it, I was finding that maybe it would not be able to pull it off and that I was wrong about it, but the further in I got, the better it became. It was not as great as I wanted it to be, but ultimately it was able to uphold to my high expectations. This book is about Pelly, she has panic attacks and finds it hard to be outside of her house. But she wants to get back to a regular life where she would be able to get out with friends and go back to high school instead of online school. Pelly decides the first step to achieving a normal life again is to get out of her house, to do that she gets a job at a little hole in the wall coffee shop. This is a safe place for her to start to re-enter the world, that is until she thinks she sees her friend that was kidnapped six years ago. Seeing this girl throws Pelly back into the cycle of survivors guilt and what she could have done to help her friend. Pelly decides that this time, she will do something, so, with the help of a new friend she sets out to right the wrong she believes that she did six years ago. I think that this book does a really good job illustrating what it is like to have panic attacks and mental issues and how the person does not control or chose to have them, but that it is something that needs to be worked through and can be helped with. As I said before, I feel the book did not reach its full potential but it did a really great job at trying for it. One part that is really great about this book is the ending, it was conclusive and satisfying even though every problem was not solved. It is refreshing to not just have a typical fairy tale ending where everything goes back to normal. I think that this book also caters to people who are looking for a little bit of adventure even though they do not have super powers or know how to use magic. But the idea that a normal person can also go on an adventure, like Pelly was able too. I give this book four stars because the story and ending were really good, but it is a little hard to get into.

Recommended - Definitely worth 5 stars

I was sent Shackled by horrornovelreviews.com in exchange for an honest review:

Pelly is broken. She knows she is. She just doesn’t know how to fix it.

Six years ago, when she was just 10, her best friend, Tara, disappeared from a mall. They had been playing hide and seek until her friend never came out of hiding. They were just two 10-year-old girls who played a game with Tara’s mother’s permission. Doesn’t take us long to figure out that Pelly blames herself for what happened.

She doesn’t go to school, wants to never leave her room – her safe place. With the help of her therapist, she is able to leave the house and get a job as a barista. Not big money, but at least she can think of something besides her worthlessness. However, Pelly stops going to her therapist and taking her pills. She overheard her parents say that the insurance won’t cover her therapy sessions anymore. She adds guilt to the mix of negative emotions as she knows that each parent works way too many hours to cover the bills. Pelly copes by smoking, snapping a rubber band on her wrist and cutting herself.

Her only sort-of-friend is David, another barista whose shifts sometimes overlap hers. Pelly wants to be normal, to go to school and to have friends, but she is so caught up in her own misery that she fails to see the signs of friendship that David shows her.

One day, while serving at the counter, an older man comes in with a teenage girl. Even through her lethargy, Pelly is sure that the girl is Tara. Pelly contacts the police. The original detective in charge of the case is still at work and she isn’t sure if this is a good or a bad thing. The detective doesn’t seem very excited. Pelly feels that he will check out her story as a matter of routine and not because he’s hopeful.

She decides to take action - she’ll do her own investigating. She reaches out to David for help. This is her first major step out of the pit she has dug for herself.

The author does a fine job in getting into the mind of an angst ridden teenage girl. This is not a story of slashing monsters. It is a story about the unthinkable happening and its devastating effects on everyone it touches.

Everything is told from Pelly’s viewpoint. What she’s going through, how she suffers and how she reacts to the others in her life is really interesting, but hold on, the action is coming and when it does, it is as exciting as anything I’ve ever read.

Tom Leveen has an absorbing way of writing that makes us want to keep reading the story to find out what happens next. Highly recommended.

psychological thriller and insightful message
By Tom Lewandowski
An agonizing buildup to a satisfying ending … Tom Leveen definitely delivers in this YA psychological thriller! What I truly appreciate about this novel is Leveen's approach to living with anxiety and the varying degrees in which it affects people living with it and those who care about them. The main character, Pelly, has moments when she feels mostly functional; however, her mental state can change in an instant, and Leveen's description of the psychological AND physiological affects are absolutely accurate. Pelly's coping mechanisms are smoking and cutting, both of which she is trying to control. One thing did concern me though, and that is Pelly's decision to stop taking her medication. All too often, people do this: they start to feel like they no longer need their medication/therapy, so they stop taking it/going to therapy, and then they get worse (I know this from personal experience). The author does address this somewhat, but more about the therapy than the medication.

Other than that, I have little to find fault with this novel. It is a realistic and empathetic portrayal of a very relatable girl trying to deal with her anxiety, while also trying to discover if her friend who was kidnapped six years ago is the same girl who walked into the coffee shop where Pelly now works. I think this novel also carries a very important message about trusting your gut instincts when it comes to people and whether or not to take action. I definitely want my daughter and my students to read this novel!

Review
"I LOVED this book! I seriously think it could (should) be the next hugely popular young adult fantasy!"--Molly, Woven Magic Books Blog

"This story is exactly why I love reading so much."--Anke, Goodreads Reviewer

From the Inside Flap
"Drifter." His voice is deep and rich beneath the scorn. "I should have known."

I won't rise to that bait. Everyone knows Earthmakers hate my kind. I demand, "What are you doing here?"

He stares his refusal at me.

Now that I'm so close, I notice that his eyes are the strangest I've ever seen. Their color shifts: blue to green, then streaked with brown, then edged with gold. They shift to green again. I frown. "What's wrong with your eyes?"

His jaw clenches, and his eyes turn blue, as an Earthmaker's should be. He stills as though he's under control now, but the pulse beating hard under my knife and the tension of his lean, muscled body tells me his control is thin.

He says steadily, "What do you want with Martel?"

I press the blade harder and feel a wash of satisfaction when he winces. "I'm asking the questions."

I LOVED this book! I seriously think it could (should) be the next hugely popular young adult fantasy!
By Molly Mortensen @ Woven Magic Books
The magic was awesome! And so unique! There are two kinds of magical people; Earthmakers and Drifters. Earthmakers have control over the elements and can travel over a distance within the life force of trees. Drifters can form weapons and energy, traveling through the drift, a web created by living creatures.

"I draw my thoughts into myself and ease along my mooring, the glowing thread of energy that connects my physical body to the energy world of the Drift. Though every living thing has a mooring, and every living thing is part of the Drift, only Drifters can travel along their mooring to actually enter the Drift. Or to draw power from it."

The world building was excellent and expertly done. It starts with a medieval kingdom, but the entire world is fleshed out with different peoples and cultures. I particularly liked the floating islands of the Earthmakers.

From the first page I could tell how well written this book was and I thought Astarti had a great voice. She’s been abused, but she was still tough and proud. She’s never had anyone be truly nice to her before, but that doesn’t stop her from being a good person.

"One thing Belos has taught me is that you collect information where you can and you don’t let anyone know that you know it."

Logan was also an awesome character. He had enough personality and spunk to go along with his mysterious tortured past. He’s rash and emotional and unlike most Earthmakers, but that’s what I liked about him. All of the minor characters were well done too too especially Belos and the Drifter King. (He has a long name starting with H and I can’t remember it.)

Griever’s mark has nice action scenes, from swords and spears to the magical battles. (and even a siege) I could picture the fighting perfectly and I didn’t have the desire to skim over anything.

The pacing was intense towards the end, though it’s all pretty fast paced, but I even forgot to eat I was so engrossed in the story. (and that’s saying something. Molly eats like a hobbit.)

The romance was well done, and I’m totally rooting for these two. I like them both and I really felt it. Their relationship went at just the right speed to be believable! This book made me have feelings! I swear I almost teared up!

The Bad:

It ends to be continued! Why?! I need more NOW! The next book comes out in the spring of 2015. (Which I know isn’t too long in the book world, but I can’t wait!)

My Summary:

Astarti was abandoned by her mother, and left with the Griever’s Mark, which is placed on those about to die or unwanted children. She was taken in by Belos, who is known by many names, the deal maker, the deceiver, the liar. He makes deals with people offering them power in exchange for them accepting his Leach, which in turn feeds his magic. When Astarti was young he Leached her and now she has no choice but to do as he says. Through the Leach he can always find her and even take over her mind and control her.

Belos and his seven are Earthmakers, another people with great powers, but after being banished by his people he’s learned the magic of humans as well, Drifting. Drifters and Earthmakers hate one another and they all fear Belos.

Astarti is sent to convince someone to make a deal with Belos when she meets a young warden Earthmaker. She knows she should kill him, but she can’t bring herself to. She hates belonging to Belos, but thinks escape is impossible. Is this young warden her enemy or could he help her somehow?

Point of View: First Present (Astarti & Logan)

Predictability: 3 out of 5 (Where 1 is George RR Martin (If the characters make a plan or think about the future I know it isn’t going to go that way.) And 5 is Cinder (where I guessed what was going to happen long before it did, but it was still a great book.)

A Great New Fantasy
By Jill
4.5/5 stars.

I'm really, really impressed with this book. Fantasy is undoubtedly my favorite genre to read (though I admittedly don't read nearly enough of it), so I was really excited to get a place on the blog tour for this title. I was not disappointed. Plus, look at the cover. It's absolutely gorgeous.

The world building here is great, talking about a society in which humans live in plain sight of other types of being such as Drifters and Earthmakers, who can use energy and magic of sorts. There's a plot of kings and assassins and forbidden romance and slavery tethers that all add up to a story that never gets boring. For the most part, I found that everything was explained really well without having the dreaded "info dump" of background information. That being said, because there was such an onslaught of new ideas and words there were a few times where I got a bit confused. This never lasted for more than a paragraph or two, and it didn't really hinder my enjoyment of the novel. I also feel like the concept of the Drift- that is, this sort of "other world" that those who are Drifters can dip into- could have been explained or flushed out a little bit. I think I get it, but I was left a little bit uncertain as to how exactly to visualize this.

I really liked the characters of this book as well. The main character, Astarti, is both a Drifter and a slave, but she is far from a weak submissive. She's a bad ass who is skilled in fighting and dark dealings, and fights against the hand that holds her Leash. I also liked the way her master was portrayed; he is given some sympathetic traits, if just for a moment, and because Astarti has always been a silent observer, she notices his moments of foolishness or weakness while still recognizing his greatness. I appreciate that she didn't constantly cower in fear, nor did he have an impossible, perfect bad guy image that cannot be infiltrated or brought down. And then there's Logan. Gorgeous, mysterious, mystical Logan. He was probably my favorite character because of all of the questions Astarti has during their first meets. He is a sworn enemy to the Drifters, an Earthmaker, and yet he seems to be so much more. I liked watching their mysteries get solved and their romance grow.

I loved this book up until the end, which has a cliffhanger. While it has ensured that I will continue onward with the second book of series, I really dislike not having a definitive end to a book.

I'd recommend this book to YA fans who enjoy magic, romance, and fantasy. If you enjoyed Spark of Light, than I think you'll like this one.

I received a copy in exchange for my honest review.

More Than Worth the Price - Spectacular Romance
By Amazon Customer
For $4 you can't afford not to read this series. Everything about it was well done from the world building to the interesting new take on elemental magic. But what really stood out to me was the multidimensional characters. Their trials affect them in realistic ways. It acknowledges the fact that you cant go through something horrible and bounce back immediately. There is deep physiological damage that will only heal with time and effort.
With the perfect sprinkling of fantasy and romance, this series will keep you entranced to the last page.

I've Got To Quit Giving Them Away...
By Dave Mather
As a consultant, I've suggested that if agencies learned to communicate effectively, manage their emotions, and not jump to conclusions - I'd be out of work. Anna has captured this idea in an easy to read book that is part "of course!" and part "so that's what happened." I've purchased four copies of this book and have given them to leaders to read, never to get them back. This should be a must read for every leader working in a dynamic or competitive culture where conflict has become the language of choice. Anna's solutions are easy to understand and it's easy to navigate a path to a healthier, happier workplace. After reading her book, I got certified on her techniques this year.

Conflict becomes a Paper-Tiger
By David Innes
I have read several books on Conflict Resolution and Anna Maravelas' How to Reduce Workplace Conflict and Stress is among the best and is definitely my personal favorite.

By carefully and simply explaining the PSYCHOLOGICAL underpinnings of conflict, in the context of SYSTEM THINKING, she "demystifies" workplace conflict, making it far less threatening, and far more manageable. Seen clearly, it becomes a PAPER-TIGER, inflated far beyond it's true nature, by the very fear and uncertainty that it typically engenders.

Uniquely, Maravelas' book left me feeling GOOD. Other conflict resolution books left me -- ?? knowledgeable / armored / armed ?? -- but her's left me feeling SAFE.

****************
****************

PSYCHOLOGY: (Long-Story Short)

Most common workplace conflict is anchored in simple frustration.

We can react to it, from the mid-brain (limbic system, emotional stuff) - flood with adrenaline, and blame and attack someone, who then goes defensive, boundaries guarded and not open to change.

OR

We can reflect on it, from the fore-brain (prefrontal lobes, neo-cortex; rational thinking), and ask ourselves, "What might cause an intelligent capable person to act like that?" The other party is far more likely to listen and be open to change if they feel SAFE.

What else may be happening, what is in the context, that we aren't seeing? Marevelas uses the iconic image of the "BIBS -- Baby In the Back Seat" (see the book for why - its a good story) to refer to this.

The Mid-Brain reaction -- anger, aimed at others, or fear, which is anger turned inwards against ourselves -- ANGER MAKES US STUPID. As for the Fore-Brain reflection -- CURIOSITY MAKES US SMART.

****************
****************

SYSTEM THINKING: (I'll let the book speak for itself)

"Most workplace processes were never consciously designed, they just evolved." (p 169)

"Situations have a huge effect on human behavior. Competitive systems with harsh economic norms result in aggressive, and sometimes unethical behavior. In contrast, systems that are seen as accessible, fair, rewarding, and cooperative bring out the best in people. In the book No Contest, Alfie Kohn documents this finding in detail." (p 164)

"Dr. Deming, one of the most effective change agents of all times, believed that 85 to 93 percent of workplace waste originates in systems, not people. He became famous for witty harangues of managers who hounded employees to improve productivity when, in reality, most employees had zero authority to change systems and processes of their workflow." (p 169)

"In his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, [Nelson] Mandela tells how he was deeply influenced by the writings of Gandhi during the years he was incarcerated. He realized that blame and contempt, although 'justified,' would not move him closer to his goal of creating a healthy, viable government and society. Mandela focused on changing the system, not individuals" (p 198)

"When I'm doing team building or conflict resolution, I often create a simple process map with clients. .... We create the process as it should be, and then how it really works. Lightbulbs flash when people see how much of their conflict is related to dysfunctional processes, not people." (p 168)

"Whenever I enter a high-conflict situation, I always start with the assumption that the conflict's root causes are in the system, and act accordingly. The odds are in my favor. In resolving more than 120 conflicts, only twice have I found the root cause of the problem was a key person who lacked the capacity to do his or her job." (p 170)

I note, even here, there is no suggestion of malice on the part of those people. Most likely, they lacked the proper knowledge or skills, and probably had positive intent.

****************
****************

PAPER-TIGER: (Various other quotes from the book)

"Behavior that appears aggressive and unreasonable is often the attempt of an unskilled and desperate person who is struggling to stay within the workplace community, to be heard, and therefore included." (p 16)

"I always enter conflict situations with the assumption that I'm dealing with negative reciprocity, rumors, system problems, and misperceptions. Until proven otherwise I give people the benefit of the doubt, and its seldom that they didn't deserve it." (p 82)

"Those skilled in conflict resolution don't just resolve negative situations and walk away. They replace negativity with positive attitudes, behavior, and energy that bond and sustain people." (p 120)

****************
****************

So, having described how we typically deal with conflict - poorly, thru lack of understanding and experience, Maravelas then gives us the knowledge, the insight, and the skills, to deal with conflict WELL; to confront conflict with intelligence and compassion, dealing with the problem, without blaming and attacking the person.

We can be self-righteous or effective. Pick one.

Self Abidance, 2nd Abridged Edition, by Srimati Margaret Coble, Sad Chid Anandam Brahman

I am honored and privileged to express my sincere appreciation for the sublime contents of: Self-Abidance written by an Enlightened Soul Srimati Margaret Coble. The sublime ideas embodied in this book have been made possible thanks to her present selfless deeds in the field of Yoga; besides her previous spiritual karmas are manifesting themselves to lead men, woman and children towards inner greatness. Many people have seen the Inner Light through her teachings. This book deals with Self-Analysis, the power, the deep meditation, the Divine Light, the Universal Love, the Bliss that pervades the souls of human beings, the height of inner perfection and the flood-gate of spirituality in practical action. Intellect fades away before the power of Spirit through which the possibility of Super-Consciousness is perfectly revealed. From the spiritual point of view all the Chapters of this book converge towards one focal point - the highest acme of Self-realization through Meditation and Self-inquiry. In Self-Abidance it is marvelously elucidated that contemplation upon the Flawless Infinite is the quickest and surest way of attaining Bliss and perennial happiness. One should not seek the shadows, oblivious of the Reality. I wholeheartedly endorse and recommend Self-Abidance to everybody inasmuch as it will render Divine service to the present generation as also to posterity. - Dr. Meernaidoo T. Somanah, Ph.D.

Positive Inspiration and the Wisdom of Self Realization!
By Patricia Miller
Self Abidance is a book about Self-Realization.

It is amazing how much wisdom and positive inspiration is contained in such a small book!

These are some of my favorite quotes from Self Abidance:

Truth is non-dual. It is the awareness of awareness, seeing the seer and knowing the knower, without the medium of the sense organs. It is the intuitive and direct perception of the Consciousness which is timeless existence and everlasting eternal joy.

Focus on the inner light - direct awareness - I Am. The door to Self-realization is wide open to you. Through the constant practice of abiding in the Self you become established in the Ultimate.

Meditate and drop all objects from this witnessing consciousness, focusing on consciousness directly.

Discover It to be Pure Peace and objectless Happiness, your own Self. Abide in That. You are That.

Ever continuing one's practice in this way, one begins to abide in what was here from the very beginning: unlimited awareness, non-dual consciousness, changeless Presence.

Remember again and again your true nature: Oneness, peace, happiness. Take note of a changeless Presence. At other times, mentally affirm I am Consciousness. Meditate. All this brings the energy-flow of the mind inward, homeward. It matters where your energy goes!

The quest of Who Am I is the beginning of real understanding.

The persistent win through. All are the I AM. The only obstructions are self-created mechanisms of the mind. What man has done, he can undo.

Continue divine practice to the end which is natural constant experience of the real nature in the Perfection of Being.

With great love and devotion concentrate on the feeling of I; how this I within you feels, exists and shines. You may find yourself laughing and laughing when you realize I have been trying to feel everything else, except I, the Real.

When you drop all this movement of the mind, retracting all into your own Self, then you shine as Consciousness Pure.

This is the process of enlightenment: to emphasize more and more the consciousness aspect rather than the objective appearance aspect.

Rejoice in the direct realization of consciousness as I AM.

It has begun. The great Awakening. You are in it. I am in it. It is in us. In it we live and move and have our Being. There is no place to go except on and on with Consciousness in Consciousness as Consciousness, Peace and Bliss.

As long as consciousness experiences itself as limited with a particular body and mind, it needs some method of interiorization, such as Yoga, to extricate itself from the world of appearances in order to realize the true nature of its own Self. Yoga practice prepares for the awakening to take place from the inner Self.

Only by this awakening or rebirth is the deeper realm of Being realized. Thus the consciousness drops all false associations and realizes its own innate nature which is Peace and Bliss. It now discerns directly the changeful realms of mind and matter as not-self, as mere variable objects lit up by Itself as the subject. Through continued discerning practice - Self-Analysis - consciousness becomes fully established in the Truth of its own Being and that is Self-Realization.

This means that no object or mental wave has any more power to mislead consciousness away from its true nature which is pure awareness, peace and innate happiness.

Real Life begins with Self-realization.

Even the love we are radiating out has its Source in the un-manifest. Search that!

This un-manifest part of you must no longer remain unknown and unrealized! For, that is our great imbalance; too much energy always going into too much diversification without our knowing the one Source, the Eternal Peace, the Infinite Blessedness as our own changeless Self-nature. Our real Self is eternally changeless and until we realize our changelessness in peace and bliss, suffering will continue!

You need meditation. Aim daily at the depth of the Unmanifest.

Recognize your hunger for the Unmanifest. By meditation, experience the Unmanifest directly.

Refuse to let energy run away from you, aligning itself against your Self-realization!

The energy which flows habitually away from the center must be made to come back into the Center which is Consciousness. Then Inner Presence is lit up by that same energy and you stand Self-revealed, at Peace.

I Am Pure Consciousness, Peace and Bliss.

Before the Absolute Self - which we all are - can be realized properly, there must be an introduction to that Self. It must be made clear in a most lucid and open way that there is but One Self - what that Self is and what it is not - and what are the methods for directly realizing its natural ever-presence.

If we bring our energy in 100% there is a total change of polarity. Whereas matter previously had the power to imprison our consciousness, now Consciousness pure and sublime has the absolute power to reveal its true nature of Infinite Peace and Bliss, Oneness and Perfection.

This is open to all. The ever-enlightened Self is here now! If any human being can envision Enlightenment as a possibility, that being is qualified for its experience.

Whatever thought comes, whatever sensation arises, I am already beyond it. I stand eternally beyond anything and everything that comes and goes.

Know that all divisions are the imagination of the mind; resolve not to be subjected to the mind. Insist that you must know and realize the Self permanently.

Pure Consciousness, the infinite ocean of Existence, Peace and Bliss is here now as your real Self and true Nature.

Now there is really nothing but this ocean of Love, and you are one with it. No dualism, no separation, no otherness - just this unconditioned love, peace and bliss. Do not settle for anything less. Resolve to be vigilant, to catch yourself again and again whenever you are out of this experience. This is your Home, your Reality. Let not the mind deceive you away from it. Let nothing interfere with it. If you find yourself in some other level of experience, return yourself to where you belong, namely, into Love, Oneness, Blessedness, changeless Identity.

The constant, continuous, flawless, perfect flow of Oneness, Wholeness, and Perfection. You and I belong into this.

Learning to identify with the pure Light of Consciousness, the Real `I' behind every movement of the mind, you step back from limitation and exclusiveness.

A sense of flowingness and spaciousness arises, for that life within is not bound by gravity or limited by form.

Now let Being shine.

Let there be total renunciation of anything other than That which is subjective Self-luminous Light, Existence and Knowingness. You are this!

Never absent current of pure awareness, serenity, and blessedness. This current is to be discovered.

By moving the focus of attention progressively inward to the very subtlest where there is no division whatever, no individual body, no individual mind and no separation - the Self is realized.

Talking about, and truly experiencing, are two different things.

It is in the very nature of that flow to bring wholeness and perfection to all who are open to it - making room for it by relaxation and giving time for it by meditation.

Only by first-hand experience can we let our light shine from the innermost Self, because only there prevails eternal unity and peace.

Pay attention to the silence; it is of consciousness, your own being-ness.

A shifting of the focus of attention from the object to the subject, from the gross to the subtle, from the outer to the inner, from matter to Spirit, from multiplicity to Oneness.

Go daily into deep meditation. Dive deep beneath the waves of the mind into the ocean of Being where Oneness, Peace, and perfect Harmony prevails. Gradually learn to abide there.

There must be a rest from all acting, talking, and thinking, so that That which is beyond, behind, and within all as the Foundation may be realized.

Investigate who is the witness of all these vibrations. Discover that this witness is consciousness, pure awareness unmixed with sensations, thoughts, feelings, concepts, or imaginations. It is even unmixed with the diversified flow of its own energy, being just pure awareness.

Recollect your focus into That and know: I AM. It is through the I-am that we enter in. I am is the door. By this I-am we enter into THAT I AM, the eternal ocean of beingness, knowingness, peace, and bliss.

Pure Consciousness, the I AM THAT I AM should be more real to us than all the realms of multiplicity.

Let us understand clearly that the Supreme Self is the only changeless Reality which is Eternal Existence, Consciousness, Peace and Bliss. It is an infinite ocean, Self-existent, Self-luminous, Self-satisfied. Wholeness and Perfection is Its own Nature. The constant and flawless flow of this pure awareness, peace and happiness is continuously going on right within.

The Self is One without a second, transcendental, infinite and eternal - and we must not leave it out of our experience!

Do Self-analysis: the practice of awareness of consciousness.

We are not to stop short of total At-One-Ment, Self-realization, the Ultimate Truth.

Amazing little book!
By Michael Hansen
Self Abidance is one of the best books that I have ever read on the topic, and I have read a lot. This is another great addition to the small, but powerful collection of works by the same publisher, all of which are worth buying and incorporating into your life. This book is particularly direct, and a large part of its strength lies in its brevity. If you're like me, and you've read it all, and you were still left wondering what it's all about -- what the core teachings are -- then buy this book. If this is your first book on the topic, then this book would be a great start to your search, and it very well could be the end of it as well! It was like having all of the works of Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadatta Maharaj condensed into a very powerful 86 pages, containing everything that needed to be there, and nothing that didn't. It's a book that begs to be read slowly, pored over, reflected and meditated on, and allowed to penetrate to the depths of your Being.

Succinct Perfection Spiced With Love
By Amazon Customer
This book is truly extraordinary, especially in today's glutted marketplace of spiritual books.

Because of progress on the path in recent years, having retired from a thirty year psychotherapy career after a catastrophic initial awakening in 2006, and thanks in great part to Michael Langford' work, I had stopped reading spiritual books in lieu of practice itself. However, this book is my one exception as you will likely see if you give it to yourself. It only takes a short time to read it, yet its depth, intelligence, superb English, and genuine love are not only inspiring but actually show one how and why in plain language

This book is my marooned on a desert island for life book along with the two other gems from Michael Langford's Freedom Religion Press (The Most Direct Means To Eternal Bliss, and, The Seven Steps To Awakening) which brings the world's most potent spiritual awakening writings and methods to the modern reader. Langford is the real deal and so is Sri Margaret Coble and this book.

It is both practical and encouraging and the text is beautiful to the heart and the mind.

If you have ever wanted to easily grasp the essential non-dual teaching and the core practice of direct self inquiry from Advaita India, without the cultural baggage and intellectualizing, then you will love this jewel by Sri Margaret Coble.

Here is an email I recently received from a 75 year old friend whom I sent it to. This says it all.

Dear Thomas:

Self Abidance is an amazing book - just at the right time. I usually high light those very special words. No underlining on this one - every word, every phrase, every sentence is IT.

All IS love,

Joanie

A classic, a must read!
By Carlos T. Mock
The City and the Pillar by Gore Vidal

The book opens in the present - sometime in the late 1940's in a bar where men looked for men - and the protagonist, Jim Willard, has a flashback of his life.

Jim Willard, a junior in high school in the late 1930's in a small town in Virginia, is the oldest of three children in a marriage that could best be described as cold. He's a very good tennis player but is not popular with the girls - not because he's ugly - he's a beautiful blond and muscular man - but rather because he's secretly in love with Bob Ford. Just as Bob is going to graduate from high school, Jim and Bob go camping to a secluded cabin in the woods and they have sex. Jim is infatuated with Bob for life.

Bob decides he wants to sail: he joins the Merchant Marine and even though he writes to Jim for a short while, Bob practically disappears from Jim's life. Trying to find Bob, Jim goes to New York City with $75 in his pocket. Out of money and unable to find Bob, Jim becomes a cabin boy on a cruise ship. Jim sails all over the world until he's exposed by a fellow cabin boy, Collins, who calls him queer after Jim is unable to have sex with a woman.

After this episode, Jim settles in L. A. where he becomes a tennis instructor at the Garden Hotel in Beverly Hills. He is introduced to the famous actor Ronald Shaw by Leaper, one of the bellhops at the hotel, and starts an affair with Mr. Shaw.

Jim can't bring himself to love Mr. Shaw - he's still in love with Bob. Their affair is ended when Jim meets the writer Paul Sullivan who is in his late twenties. Jim is drawn to Paul because he seems so different from the other, more stereotypical homosexuals he meets at Hollywood parties. Bob had married once - although he never consummated the marriage.

Again, Jim can't love Paul because he's still in love with Bob. Jim considers Paul adequate for the time being. Paul however, needing some pain in his relationships for artistic inspiration, introduces Jim to Maria Verlaine, who seems to specialize in seducing homosexuals, hoping his relationship will end in a suitably tragic way. Together, the three go to Yucatán, where Maria has to settle an inheritance. Jim actually falls in love with Maria, but he is unable to perform sexually. They remain good friends: lovers in every way but the physical part.

This affair is broken up by WWII. Both Paul and Jim enlist. Jim gets transferred to a Colorado Air Force base, where he must deal with his sexuality. Bob ends up as a war correspondent. Due to the cold Colorado weather, Jim contracts a severe case of Strep throat which almost kills him. This leads to rheumatoid arthritis and a honorable discharge with disability benefits.

Jim goes back to New York, where he meets Maria and Ronald again. Ronald has been forced to marry a lesbian, Calla Petra, by studio executives to uphold his public image and tries unsuccessfully to become a stage actor. He also introduces Jim to his local friends like the effeminate millionaire, Nicholas J. Rolloson (Rolly) . Rolly has frequent parties where he celebrates his two passions: modern art and the military.

Jim begins frequenting gay bars to find sexual relief. Later, he meets Paul at a party and the two start an open relationship, not because of passion, but out of loneliness.

In the meantime, Jim's father dies and Bob marries his childhood sweetheart, Sally Mergendall. When Jim finally goes home for Christmas, Jim meets with Bob. Jim is very excited and determined to win Bob back. Jim realizes that Sally wants Bob to settle down and leave the Merchant Marine, but Bob doesn't want to settle down. Jim arranges an appointment with Bob on his next stop in New York, hoping their affair can resume.

The resolution of their relationship comes in New York, where they end up on the bed in Bob's hotel room after an all night out drinking. When Jim finally thinks he has attained what he wants, he moves closer. Grabbing Bob's "sex", he panics. Bob is outraged to be thought of as gay, and punches Jim in the face. The two struggle and Jim wins because he is stronger. Jim is infuriated enough to murder Bob but settles on raping Bob and then leaves the room. He then resumes a loveless life...

a coping mechanism to occupy space and time on this romantic quest of idealized love. Will Jim find it
By Amazon Customer
Considering Gore Vidal wrote the novel in 1948 and it chronicles this nomadic journey of a young gay man, Jim Willard, is, in itself, quite remarkable. The book became an International bestseller, catapulted Vidal into the literary mainstream and gave him carte blanche into the pithy arena of politics and swanky social observation. A romantic crush on a high-school sweetheart, a stolen, sexual encounter in a hidden oasis sets the novel off and Jim Willard searches the world to regain that precious remembered moment. Time, faces, men and women all seem insignificant, a coping mechanism to occupy space and time on this romantic quest of idealized love. Will Jim find it? Will Jim’s journey ultimately end happily ever after? Can he rekindle the fantasy that has kept him hostage? No, but what Vidal does reveal in quiet gusto is our innate ability of a species to use. The characters Jim wades through to get to his means become a sad, blank, cardboard cast. Love becomes usury – a painful itch to scratch – in the meantime. The faces and bodies and personalities are either stereotypically charming, offensive, movie-star good-looking, or just plain putrid…and beauty, at any level, will always win out. With a price. There are no free lunches in The City and the Pillar. On a grander scope: the deprivation of a connected spiritual inner journey versus the immediate and compulsive urges of the flesh. It is obvious which side wins out.

Both historically, and at face value,
By Julie Vognar
I found this to be a fine book. The prose is spare, lean, direct--much like Jim, its protagonist. It does not have the eloquence or depth of Vidal's later work, but it doesn't TRY to--it stays within itself. The official amazon.com reviwer has said not to read it for the sex, and this is of course true. The only sex scene actually described is described metaphorically, but so beautifully as to inspire Thomas Mann to call it (in the word of one translator) "glorious." Vidal himself uses a more modest word in translating Mann's diary entry, though he's very proud that Mann credited this book with inspiring him to take up "Felix Krull" again.

The book is NOTHING like "Brokeback Miountain," either the movie or the short story. Although Jim resists for a time thinking of himself as gay, and spends the years between 17 and 22 on a quest for the lost love with whom he spent most of a weekend having sex near an abandoned slave cabin close to their homes in a small Virginia town, this quest is interrupted by fairly long-term relatioships with other men, whom he meets after 'going to sea," following in the foosteps of that lost love. The Hollywood actor and the sweet but not very successful writer, in Hollywood, New Orleans and further south--and then again in New York City, where he meets both again, provide an interesting and very realistic sounding mileau for a young gay man on the loose in 1946 and shortly thereafter. He never has sex with a woman, and quits trying after one attempt with a woman he's very fond of.

The end of his quest--and I read the revised, less "black" version--made me scream "Oh no!" But after thinking about it a while, I shouldn't have been surprised.
