Unfocused but frequently illuminating meditations on how we see and how we don't. What the deconstructionists did for language, exposing its grave limitations and fallibilities, Elkins attempts to do for vision. As he convincingly demonstrates, ``vision is forever incomplete and uncontrollable because it is used to shape our sense of what we are.'' In Elkins's view, even the simplest, most reductive statement that can be made about seeing, ``the beholder looks at the object,'' is charged with such uncertainty and so many possible valences that it is incapable of any fixed or stable meaning. Seeing is also something that we have remarkably little control over, depending as it does on mood, thoughts, character, circumstance, etc., etc. Someone who is running late, for instance, suddenly becomes aware of a crowded world of clocks. As an art historian at Chicago's School of the Arts Institute, Elkins has a well-honed appreciation of the visual world, but he does have several substantial blind spots. He tends to cling too closely to his familiar tableaux morts, the unmoving, fixed images of paintings and photographs. Film and its shaping of vision are mentioned only in passing. Physics is similarly slighted, notably quantum mechanics and its discovery that the very act of perception can influence the results of an experiment. These omissions would not be so glaring if Elkins did not constantly try to find the telling in the trivial. Sometimes he is successful, such as in his discussions of animals' protective camouflage. But are six photographs of Chinese executions and a long discussion of the moment of death or extended disquisitions on nude models really relevant? In fairness, this is an enormous subject, and any account will be necessarily incomplete. Elkins is to be commended for shedding as much light as he does (and for elegantly abstaining from the temptations of academic jargon) in a ceaselessly thought-provoking book. Eyes aren't windows, opening indifferently upon anything at all; eyes are in the world, and they want something out of it. Elkins takes off from this familiar phenomenological point, and goes on to explore some of the ways in which vision expects the visible, a world that is not just there to be seen, but that responds to our glances, "stares back." In a sense, Elkins reminds us, our eyes aren't ours. There are things we look at in spite of ourselves -- sexual things, above all -- and things we cannot bear to see, like death. There are also innumerable things we may in fact see but commonly overlook: the earth's shadow, for instance, or the anti-sun shining at the edge of night. This is a congenial and stimulating essay on seeing, gracefully written and full of curious matter. The pictures are telling too.

Because our viewing of people, places and objects is molded by thoughts of using, possessing, keeping or cherishing what is seen, we actually perceive very little of what we look at, claims Elkins. In a remarkable tour de force, this art historian uses scores of intriguing photos and illustrations (of a mermaid, ice halos in Alaska, the surface of atoms, a eunuch, a medieval Russian icon painting, etc.) to buttress his thesis that seeing depends on context, desire and expectation. Elkins, who teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, analyzes how we read the human face and discusses pathologies of vision such as blindness and glaucoma. He pays special attention to phenomena that we view with ambivalence or dread-naked bodies, executions, death (a few of the images reproduced here are grisly). He sometimes overstates his case, as when he lamely argues that we exist in "a world full of gazes" because "each object has a certain force, a certain way of resisting or accepting my look and returning that look to me." Nevertheless, his inquiry is a rewarding adventure that draws freely on psychology, literature, art history, neuroanatomy and philosophy to illuminate modes of seeing and of being.

thinking about seeing

Elkins succeeds in making the reader rethink what it means to see, to be seen, to be blind. He argues that vision is a dynamic interaction between the observer and the observed that invariably transforms both parties--even when one is inanimate. He's an art historian, but marches confidently through animal behavior, philosophy, sociology and other subjects in persuit of the meaning of vision. The resulting meditations are provocative, and usually quite rigorous, but remain clear and personal in tone and studiously avoid learned jargon.

While I felt moved by the book, quite powerfully at places, I'm not sure that I actually went anywhere. Elkins avoids all mechanistic discussion of vision--even though there is much in the physiology of seeing and the quantum physics of observation which support his thesis. Consequently, the overall discussion lacks a certain fiber even though it's fully persuasive in parts. Still, if you care about vision and imagery, you can't go wrong by reading this eloquent, passionate book. It's guaranteed to make you think before you look.

Not what I expected but still a good and interesting read!

I agree with the other reviewers, however I do not feel that the book deserves a low review because people's expectations were not met. I expected a more scientific explanation of seeing, but this book is not about that. I was impressed by the writing of Elkins because it is very thought provoking and insightful. I would recommend this book to someone who is interested in seeing the world in a different way, because this book will encourage you to look at things a little more carefully and realize there is much we see, do not see, try not to see and try hard to see but fail to do so. Very interesting book!!!

A post-modern view of visual perception

This book offers a thoughtful and disconcerting view of visual perception that runs counter to the usual modernist view that we all perceive alike, which many of us grew up with. As a graphic designer and educator, I appreciated Elkins' point of view, his approachable writing style, and even the disturbing images he uses to make his point. I recommend this book to other designers and visual communicators.

JAMES FREEMAN is the founder and owner of Blue Bottle Coffee Company. Awesome Coffee Book!

To be honest, I had never actually had Blue Bottle coffee before pre-ordering this book. I just couldn't stop hearing about how good it is during my galavants around San Francisco and Berkeley.

This book is packed with great information and tells you how Blue Bottle makes its coffee, pastries, and other fun recipes step by step. There is also a ton of information on coffee growing and roasting, as well as coffee's history. James covers different brewing methods thoroughly, making it a truly enjoyable read for any coffee fan. You will also get information on coffee equipment, which I found particularly useful because I myself am trying to make the best coffee I can.

Oh, and I finally got around to trying Blue Bottle Coffee this past weekend in Hayes Valley. I ordered an espresso which was definitely one of the best I've ever had. The 81 year old English man next to me was in agreement.

For those inclined to know everything they could have ever possibly wanted to know about coffee, this book is a great place to start...and finish.

Formatting Disaster

I was super excited about reading this book on my Kindle.

If you buy it, you should know that the formatting is a total mess. Random pages pop up in the wrong section of the book, images that are meant to be associated with certain blocks of text are missing or on the wrong page, and other issues abound.

It's so disappointing to see such a sloppy unreadable job for what should have been a great book.

Unexpectedly terrific

I bought this for the Kindle and read the whole book shortly after receiving it (minus the recipes, I'm sure they're swell but I don't much enjoy baking). The section on roasting is very good and the section on espresso is particularly brutal and to-the-point. In so many words, the former seems like it should be difficult while the latter seems like it should be easier, but reality is the other way round. That said, you can't have good coffee from bad tasting beans, so knowing how beans ought to be roasted, rested, and ground is quite useful.

You can find these things elsewhere, of course, but the reason I plowed through the entire thing in the first day is that the Freemans can write, really well, in an engaging and concise style. This is not a huge book, but it is crammed with a great deal of very specific advice and information that I found most helpful. (For example, the advice to either go to a good cafe with a skilled barista, or be prepared to pay a lot of money for a heavy, balky Italian machine and then spend many hours learning to use it, is delivered unvarnished; the undeterred will then find very specific advice on grinding, tamping, pulling, and judging espressi, along with notes from the Blue Bottle locations regarding their strategy for blends of beans and single-origin coffees).

Considering that I was looking at another book that cost $45 until I flipped through the preview (and immediately bought the Kindle edition), it strikes me as a very good value. Look through the preview and see if you don't agree. Worst case, you lost a few minutes of your day, but if you are interested in what makes for a good cup of coffee (and what makes for an obsessive coffee purveyor!), I suspect you won't stop at that.

Ryker wasn't my favorite in the series,I suppose I was expecting more of an insta love connection with him and Frankie. He treated Frankie more like a casual hook up for 80% of the book with Frankie crying about how much she loved him and wished he loved her. Ryker did get himself together within the last five pages of the book so that's something. This books just felt rushed to me and felt like it ended abruptly.

Does Justice to the Powers Series.

This is a hard one for me to rate. I love Harper and her books and at the 40% mark I thought this was going to be my favorite Powers book yet.
I loved Frankie and I always love a good alpha male.
However, at one point there is a scene of dubious consent and those are an absolute no-go for me. I literally cursed aloud when I got to it because all I could think was nooooo.. don't ruin the book for me!
In the end, it didn't ruin the book, I still really enjoyed it, but that one scene really haunts me. I'd say I'd give this a 3.5, but since I love this series and Harper's writing, I'm rounding up to 4.
For most people who don't mind that particular type of scene, I think they'll love it. Ryker is cocky and hot and when he sets his sights on Frankie, I love the way he goes after her.
I also love when we get to see Ryker interact with Loch - so fun.

Frankie reads as a normal college girl to me. Yeah, he makes some dumb decisions, but I like how she beats herself up about them, too. It felt genuine. We all crushed on someone out of our league, or made a rash decision in a heated moment and then later thought "What was I thinking?"

And of course, there's Frankie's neighbor who is the star of the show. I could read a whole series of her matchmaking skills. Hint Hint Harper!

All in all, an enjoyable read and it does justice to the Powers series.

About the Author

Stephen Sarikas is a professor at Lasell College in Newton, Massachusetts (outside of Boston), where he teaches courses in anatomy & physiology, biology, and environmental science. Professor Sarikas is the 2008-2011 recipient of the Joan Weiler Arnow Professorship, an award given to a Lasell College faculty member with a record of excellence in teaching, professional development, and leadership. He is also a Lecturer of Occupational Therapy in the Boston School of Occupational Therapy at Tufts University. He received hisPh.D. (Anatomy) from the Boston University School of Medicine, his M.S. (Zoology) from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and his B.S. from the University of Massachusetts. His current research interest is AIDS/HIV awareness among college students. He is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). He is also an enthusiastic Red Sox fan.

I liked that it's colorful and matches word to word with the text book. Many lab guides come in black and white and it definitely helps having good quality images and diagrams. I actually kept my copy for future references because it covers a lot of material and has helpful info.

Pretty decent book.

It's a good lab book, but the class and my teacher have both found some issues with description that lacked information and some hard to understand images. But overall I think it's pretty good. I combine it with other texts to get a thorough understanding of the topics.

A Slow and Difficult Read

I bought the book because of the succinct chapter titles that seemed to encapsulize friendship. When I opened the book, I saw immediately that this was going to be challenging reading; there are large blocks of text that make it difficult to focus, at least for me. But it contains many gems of truth if one has the time and tools to dig them out.

Written in old English wording, Shakespearian-like in places, one has to think very carefully to glean what is being communicated. I had to re-read sentences several times. The content is very good, and the point is made that to truly have a friend, one must first of all have the common ground of spiritual agreement, of like values. I appreciate the fact that the book is Christian, and I appreciate how Mr. Black addresses what criteria to look for in forming friendships.

In the chapter titled "The Wreck of Friendship," I enjoyed this wording: "In one way or another the loss of friendship comes to all. The shores of life are strewn with wrecks. The convoy which left the harbor gaily in the sunshine cannot all expect to arrive together in the haven. There are the danger of storms and collisions, the separation of the night, and even at the best, if accidents never occur, the whole company cannot all keep up with the speed of the swiftest."

This short book written in 1898 is chock full of timeless wisdom on friendship (and life in general). It covers every aspect and form of friendship including the ultimate friendship - with God. I have read it several times and given away several copies to friends. It's a must-have in my library to refer to often, especially when I need a reminder about what really matters in life. It's my all-time favorite book.
