About the Author
Perry Wilson is a Canadian author based in Vancouver, BC who has big ideas and an itch to tell stories. Having spent some time on university, a career, and life in general, she returned to writing three years ago and hasn't looked back since (well, maybe a little, but only while parallel parking).

She also writes the Quinn Larson urban fantasy novels, and the Madeline Journeys, a high fantasy series.

Woman-Trafficking in Vancouver B.C.

I didn't realise until I finished this book that it is the first in a new series, I felt as if I had just zapped into the middle of a long-running soap opera. I am not criticising, I liked that. There were no lengthy introductions or descriptions of the people or the places, just straight in at the deep end. There is a murder in the third paragraph and from then on the excitement never lets up.

Val, the teenage prostitute whose sister has disappeared (been disappeared!) is a character I shall never forget. And as for Charity Deacon, the PI who also waits table and is not afraid to take on one of the nastiest sets of woman-trafficking thugs I have ever come across in a book or in a film (or, thank God, in real life), I loved her and I am just waiting to read the second in the series, which is apparently set in France, instead of the author's and Charity's home-town of Vancouver.

Hubris by PA Wilson is a superb book. The characters are well developed. I particularly loved private investigator Charity Deacon and Val, the teenage prostitute determined to find her sister. This story of thee women/girls standing up to gangs who are engaged in human trafficking is fast paced and engaging. It would be a tremendously good TV movie. An added bonus was the book took place in one of my favourite cities. Bottom line: I highly recommend this book. I personally will be reading more by PA Wilson.

Very readable whodunit - fast paced w. likable characters

Charity Deacon is a PI with a tendency to act first and ask questions later. She's also not great at planning exit strategies. Both traits tend to get her into trouble; luckily she thinks fast on her feet! It is a stretch to think that a murder she witnesses and a plea from a young prostitute to help find her sister might be related, but Charity somehow thinks they are. Hubris is all she has to fight the bad guys/gals, and the outcome is way more than she (or the police) expect. Definitely a good read!

If you could only afford one book!

As a network architect (12yrs), I have designed many large networks for major banks and Wall St firms. When it comes to technology design of networks, this book is the bible. (I own two copies, one for work and one for home, and I own two copies of the first edition, which was hardcover. The second edition is better, but the first I still refer to, sometimes just to review what has changed in the standards between ed. 1 and ed 2.
If you need to honstly design networks and do capacity planning with real capacity calculations based on queuing theory, and you were never great with queuing theory, and don't know who Klinerock is (The father of queuing theory), this book gives you the key modling methods used for each type of network (Cell, Frame, voice (for convergence)), and shows you how to plug in the numbers to get the information you need to size a network properly.
The first edition spends a lot of time on Frame Relay, and less time on ATM. The second edition spends a little less on Frame Relay and more on ATM. The SONET section is almost unchanged, but he found a way to make some changes that make it better. SONET is also pointed out as the NA standard, and that everyone else in the world uses SDH. When you are done with the chapter you know the difference, and why it is significant. It does a great job of pointing out that SONET is not a network, only a transport method, like pavement is not a transport vehical only a road by which transport vehicals can get people to their destinations.
If you can only have one network design book on your desk, and you are tasked with the function of designing or understanding professional network designs, this is the book.
While I realize there are a lot of people that design and build networks by empirical means, and they would get real uncomfortable if you asked them if they used a M/M/1, M/G/1, or M/D/1 model to base your capacity planning for QOS/COS on... It is in this book. (Oh yea... the proofs and theory aren't there so it won't give you bad flash-backs to college (:-)) But they do show the different types of models used (4), explain the key formulas, and use an example. You can use this to determine which model fits the network you need to build (from the core to the access... thats in there too!), and then plug in the numbers to the example to define your capacities. So you know your network can do the job, or if you have a weak spot, what the parameters of that weak spot are ahead of time to assure a CUA. (Cover your A**).
I am sorry it is out of print. I lent a copy, and of course never got it back. Now I am down to one!

Excellent book on data communication technologies!

This was very comprehensive book covering how the X.25, packet switching, Frame Relay, SMDS, and ATM data technologies work. It also does a good job of explaining how the various protocols interoperate by encapsulating packets, cells, or frames of data into their own packet, cell or frame formats. Very readable. The book has lots of diagrams and is not too technical. I learned a lot from the book and would recommend it to anyone seeking an in-depth overview of data communications systems.
This book did not really teach me how to design data networks, but I feel I have a much better understanding of how data networks function since reading this book.
My only complaint with the book is the excessive use of acronyms. While the acronyms are listed in the back of the book in a table, their pervasive use in the text was annoying and made it harder to understand. A minor irritant, at worst.
My best testament to the book is that I lost my original copy and was so dismayed by the prospect of not finishing it that I spent another $65 to buy a second copy!

McGraw-Hill or Darren Spohn?

This is one of the worst books I've read! It was poorly written, (lot's of type-o's). I also did not like the authors writting style. (he jumps around topics too much). I have read a lot of IT Books this last year and a half(over 50) and this is the first book I came across that I had to write a review about. I caution you if thinking about buying this book. The book I am reading now is Data Network Design 2nd Edition (reprint by Mcgraw-Hill copyright 2000 and it says it contains select material from this book) I don't know maybe McGraw-Hill screwed it up royally because the other reviews I've read are all high marks.

Concise and practical

What really captivated me about this book is the simple explanations of some of the nuances of the Chinese language such as yao...le or kuai...le (about to...). Very important too are the examples on the various uses of 'le'. This is by no means exhaustive, but done in a non-complicated manner and besides, any help on the usage of 'le' is helpful as this is quite a hard concept to master in Chinese.
Each chapter starts off with some dialog (Chinese characters, pinyin, no English translations) and then a reading passage. Afterwards, new words and concepts are explained, where the finer points of the language are explained. Although there are no English translations alongside the initial text in the dialogs, I think this format is ok for an intermediate text as it gives the reader an opportunity to do some self evaluation. The translations are at the end of each chapter.
Here's another example of clarifying grammatical concepts. When I previously leared "ni putonghua shuo de hen hao (your Chinese is very good)" I never understood the grammatical construct of it. The author explains that it is a shortened form of "ni shuo putonghua shuode hen hao," explains the construct and explains why and how it is shortened. He cleared up in 5 minutes what I was confused about for months.
Alas, I have only read Chapter 1 and am now reading Chapter 2. I think I will enjoy this text and will also buy his "Beginner's Chinese" which is the prequel to this book.

Fantastic Reader

I started out studying Chinese using "Practical Chinese Reader I(Beijing Press)" and have even continued using the following book in the same series only to find that it is littered with either superfluous information about tea sets or buying a traditional "Mao" suit(as it is erroneously refered to by many outside China)or full of propoganda like the four great modernizations and how everything has been better since liberation. Some of the vocabulary is out of date, the grammer is written using a dictionary of the most obscure words that only a true linguist could understand, and the lessons are extremely boring or irrevlevent to modern life.

Intermediate Chinese, however, has been one of the most helpful books I have ever used, especailly with the above for mentioned series in comparisson. The grammer is well explained with numerous examples and excercises, and the vocabulary is much more up to date. But the most important aspect has to be the ease at which he uses vocabualry. The sentances in Unit 1 are fairly easy with basic structure in tact and progresses ever more towards the latter chapters. I have just finished the book and have begun to review all the chapters only to find how simple they are now that I have completed the book.The english translations of the texts have to be the most distinguishable feature of this book as it allows you to translate back to chinese and monitor your progress. This truly is a self study book, however it does require that you be familar with stroke order and pronunciation as it lacks both. (The Practical Chinese Reader Series however covers the stroke order, and the audio can be found with a simple google search.)

I would also recommend that you go to your local library and check out the Pimsleur Mandarin Chinese CD's to improve your listening and grammer. I am almost finished with the third set and have found that it has been a great asset to my learning. This language may seem hard at first but after a few months of constant study you will begin to see how easy it really can be- its just those tricky characters that make it so difficult.But even Chinese people have a hard time with them.

My favorite Chinese learning book.

I own a bunch of Chinese learning books and this is my favorite. Whenever I feel rusty and want to brush up I pull this out, read the conversations, and do some of the exercises. Working through this book substantially improved my Chinese.
