Things that go bump! in the night

Braudy is a well-respected culture critic and the author of several well-received books, including "The Frenzy of Renown" and "From Chivalry to Terrorism." The subtitle of "Haunted" defines the perceived mission of the book--an analytical taxonomy of horror as a theme in culture and in literature: "on ghosts, witches, vampires, zombies, and other monsters of the natural and supernatural worlds." One's initial impression is that Braudy has read everything (and seen every horror movie ever made), and the footnotes fill 11 pages in quite small type. In the usual manner of public intellectuals, he engages in a lot of "because I say so" judgments of the deeper meanings of this or that; for those with the patience to follow the trail of footnotes, his conclusions seem well-defended if not always convincing. Of course, no one knows or has read everything. There is an odd chapter on detectives in fiction that seems out of place insofar as detectives are not monsters (the squeamish might demur on Mike Hammer) and the genre does not normally partake of the occult or of any but moral monstrosity. Here I think Braudy missed a really important connection between the detective and supernatural-horror genres. Writing under the names "H. and E. Heron," a mother-son team, Hesketh Hesketh-Pritchard and Kate O'Brien (Ryall) Pritchard, in 1898-99 published a wonderful series of stories recounting the adventures of Flaxman Low, the psychic detective. Low somewhat resembles Sherlock Holmes in being a free-lancer utterly dedicated to ratiocination. He is called in to investigate cases of ghosts, hauntings, and other supernatural manifestations and approaches each case with a determination to discover the natural/material basis for the phenomena. Like Holmes, he often does this by direct personal intervention entailing substantial risk. He is not always successful; some cases absolutely defy rational explanation. Here is the perfect bridge between genres, but perhaps Braudy didn't know about it--pity.
He also misses the "Ingoldsby Legends," a wonderful collection of mostly humorous tales of the supernatural (many in verse), published in "Bentley's Miscellany" in 1837 by Richard Harris Barham, under the pseudonym Thomas Ingoldsby and purporting to be local folklore of the author's neighborhood. (Braudy talks about the device of presenting supernatural tales as rediscovered old manuscripts, and the like.) A few items, such as "The Spectre of Tappington," "Jerry Jarvis' Wig," "The Jackdaw of Rheims," and "A Singular Passage in the Life of the Late Henry Harris, D.D." are still read today because they have been anthologized; few but Victorian literature specialists read the whole collection. But it is worth reading, and merits comment as not only a very early example of combining humor with horror, but perhaps the only such example until Oscar Wilde's delightful "the Canterville Ghost," several decades later.-- Anyway, even for readers steeped in such stuff, like yours truly, there are plenty of novel insights and points to ponder in Braudy's book.

About the Author

Sue Hendler (1960-2009) was associate professor in the School of Urban and Regional Planning, Queen’s University. Her work focused on environmental philosophy and policy, social issues, and planning ethics. Her writings appeared in numerous journals, including Planning Theory and Practice, Ethics and Professional Planners, and Planning Canada.

Martin Wachs is a senior principal researcher at RAND Corporation. He formerly served as director of the Transportation, Space, and Technology Program. Previously, he was professor of civil and environmental engineering and professor of city and regional planning at the University of California, Berkeley. His books include Transportation for the Elderly, Transportation Planning on Trial, and Pricing Urban Transportation.

This was a required book for my Master's course in Low-Income Housing, published by the Urban Land Institute. This is really a Handbook, and well presented, each chapter - Market Analysis, Site Selection, Financial Feasibility, etc. - are well composed, present practical examples, and resources that can be retrieved on the internet and hardcover books. (Good publishing and good delivery service!)

Amanat Chaudhry is President and Engineering Manager with Advanced Twpsom Petroleum Systems, Inc. in Houston, Texas. He founded Twpsom in 1995. The company is involved in the development of PC-based well simulation and management software support models and programs in reservoir and production engineering. He has more than 20 years of international and domestic experience in reservoir engineering reservoir simulation development and applications, well testing, water flooding, EOR techniques, reservoir studies and operations. Mr. Chaudhry formally worked as a Senior Reservoir Engineering Advisor an Senior Staff Reservoir Engineer of Pertamina, the state Owned Oil Company of Indonesia. He also worked as Senior Reservoir Engineer with Core Lab Inc. - now Western Atlas in Reservoir Simulation Application Group in Dallas. He has started his career in the oil industry with Reservoir PVT & EOR Lab Inc. (subsidiaries of Core Lab Inc.) in Houston, Texas, as a Research Associate. Her holds MS degrees in Petroleum Engineering and Chemical Engineering both from the University of Pittsburgh, PA.

Best book for Reservoir Engineers

This book is very well written and would be a very useful on the shelf of Reservoir engineers who want to have quick look at the methods to do well tests on the available well pressure data. I found the explanations for the tests to be short, but then they are precise! You can use them to understand the subject pretty easily if you have a basic understanding.

I'd not recommend this for a novice. You should have knowledge of reservoir engineering subject and maths (differential equations) if you want to purchase this book and use it. It is on the expensive side too.

As for myself, i'd use this book as an when required as its difficult to remember all the tests and how they should be used (i'd not use the calculations myself - but its good to have).

A nice purchase personally.

Many believe that those found to be "healthy" will be sent to the City's upper levels, a place inaccessible to the majority but where those selected enjoy a better life free from want and hardship. Similarly, those infected with "Evil" are sent to the lower levels. Druuna and her lover Shastar exist in this environment. After a series of adventures, Druuna discover that the City is actually a giant spaceship which left Earth after an unspecified cataclysm and has drifted through space for centuries. At some point, Lewis, the ship's captain, delegated control to the computer Delta, which is responsible for creating the current state of affairs. (The Priests are actually androids operated by Delta.) Delta transformed Lewis into an immortal being, using organic parts from the healthy people who had been admitted to the upper levels of the City.

Holy crap Erica this book was soo good! Many things happened that were mind blowing, especially the part when…..I can’t even talk about it.
First off, Quinn is totally bad a**. When someone from her past comes back to cause mayhem in the town that she calls home, Quinn handles it like a boss. We learn some new things about her power that are shocking. I won’t say what it is, but this trick came in handy at the right time.
Julian, Julian, Julian, my little tortured soul. He fought to be a better man for Quinn, but when old demons start to take over, Julian is forced to battle them once again.
Friends lost and allies gained, this book will have you on the edge of your seat. There was a crazy scene towards the end of the story that was jaw dropping and I may have yelled “no” somewhere in there. Great as always Erica and I cannot wait until the final installment!

This was the PERFECT second book!!! I can not wait to find out what Julian's plan is as mentioned at the end of the book. Where as the first book was good, this book was so much better and explores Julian and Quinn's relationship more! I was also excited that they brought back in Solar aka Cassie and Devon.

The chronologically arranged chapters cover major events in the men's lives, such as Growing up in Gujarat (Gandhi) and Acts of Defiance (Mandela). Numerous interesting photos and illustrations are included. Unfortunately, both books contain errors, such as incomplete Web site addresses in the Works Cited sections and incorrect quotes. Pretoria, where Gandhi lived for a year, is omitted from the map of South Africa, and the reason given for Mandela's separation from his first wife is not the same as that given in his autobiography. For books on Gandhi, stick with John B. Severance's Gandhi: Great Soul (Clarion, 1997). Most titles on Mandela for this audience aren't any better than this one.–Ann W. About the Author
Connie (Corcoran) Wilson (MS + 30) graduated from the University of Iowa and Western Illinois University, with additional study at Northern Illinois, the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Chicago. She taught writing at six Iowa/Illinois colleges and has written for five newspapers and seven blogs, including Associated Content (now owned by Yahoo) which named her its 2008 Content Producer of the Year .

She is an active, voting member of HWA (Horror Writers Association) and also a member of ITW (International Thriller Writers) which awarded her its Silver Feather Award in 2012 and again in 2014, MWA (Midwest Writers Association), AWP (American Writing Program) and MWC (Midwest Writing Center), which named her its Writer of the Year in 2010. She has won numerous E-Lit awards, a NABE Pinnacle award, an ALMA (American Literary Merit Award),and an IWPA Silver Feather

Eerie and captivating

Cedar Falls, Iowa seems like and idyllic place to live and raise your children. Unknown to a casual visitor is the dark history that it hides, that of rampaging murderers and evil incarnate. It does have a chance at normalcy in the form of high school senior Tad McGreevy. Since he was young, Tad has seen colours attached to each person. Most people show colours that are indicate benign behaviour, though a few exhibit khaki, which is a sign that a person is truly evil.

Tad still has no clues how to control his paranormal power, but he hopes it will help him to find his friend Stevie Scranton who has been missing for the past nine months. Up till now, no one has a clue as to where Stevie is and who might have taken him.

Unknown to Tad, Michael Clay, aka Pogo the Clown, has escaped jail and is looking for revenge against him. Michael exhibits the colour khaki. Also on Tad's trail is Daniel Malone, but I can't tell you why as I don't want to spoil any of the plot.

This is the second book in the adult series The Color of Evil. While you could read Red is for Rage as a stand alone, I highly recommend that you read The Colour of Evil first as you will want to know all about the earlier events that happened in Cedar Falls.

I liked that this second book paid more attention to the characters of Tad, Stevie, Jenny and Janice. We get to learn more about what drives each of them and how they they interact with each other and the adults around them. It also made me care about them. I was particularly drawn to Stevie and Janice.

Red is for Rage is a work of fiction, but Ms. Wilson has included a number of references and statistics that are true. Be sure to read her end notes for those details.

There are a number of stories lines that are left hanging, and are begging for completion. The loathsome Principal Peter Puck,; realtor Andra SanGiovanni, Jenny's mom; and what about Jenny herself. She has some unresolved issues.

I didn't find this book as scary/creepy as I did The Color of Evil, it was more eerie. I knew that something was going to happen, I just didn't know what or when. Ms. Wilson introduced a number of side stories that each could have been the 'big one'. Again, I found myself wanting to continue reading to find out which of these stories would develop furthest. I wasn't able to complete the reading in one sitting, but I was back up early in the morning to finish.

Great continuation!

Red is for Rage is the second book in the series "The Color Of Evil". The author continued the story where it left off in the first book. If your looking for a book full of adventure and action then this is the one for you. I would definitely say this is NOT for the younger YA. This story deals with some very tragic real life issues, child abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse for starters. Then we have the graphic violence added to the story, and while necessary to the tale it may be a bit much for the younger readers, so for that reason I think I'd say ages 16 and older.

I liked that Connie Wilson wasn't afraid to touch on such subjects in this series. She did it with so much empathy, and heart felt dialogue that I could picture some of these things happening. The part that is so sad is that they actually do occur in today's world.

I can say that Ms. Wilson did a wonderful job with Tad, and his unique abilities which we learn more about in this novel. I also think that she knows her characters quite well. She left me craving the next book, which says something. Especially since I tend to avoid these types of tales where there is so much darkness, but I could see that little glimmer of hope, the little bits of light through the darkness and it left me wanting more. We also get to see a bit more of Stevie in this book which was nice since he had gone missing early in book 1. And Michael Clay, aka Pogo the Clown, just reinforced my hatred of clowns! He doesn't have as big a role in this book, but still plays a part in continuing the story line. He is a great character that we all love to hate!

I give this book 4.5 stars and recommend it to ages 16 and older. While it deals with some sticky situations it does it in such a classy manner that it will suck you into the world she has created.

Full of mystery, thrills and horror! What more do you want?!

This is Connie's second book in The Color of Evil series. While I haven't read the first book the second book didn't confuse me at all and basically caught me up about what was going on and what went on in the first book. I have to say that it was a doozy but in a good way. Connie has a way that sweeps you up and inside the book and carries you from one page to the other as though time has stood still. I read though this book and couldn't believe what was going on and she left me hanging on every word and detail. I swear if there is not a third book and I am going to be super disappointed because I want to know what happens next. The details that Connie expresses in this book is exceptional and that is what grabs the reader and what puts them smack dab into the middle of the story. This book is full of suspense, mystery, and loads of thrills. I do have to say that there is some graphic violence so I would say this would be an 18+ read but they will love it just as much as the older adults as it keeps you on your toes and completely enthralled in the story.

In Red is for Rage, we get to learn more about Tad and his powers as he explores and learns more about them and just what they can do. When it comes to the emotional rollercoaster that we are put through it is pretty rough because Connie talks about some very tragic and emotional issues that I've not encountered with a novel before. I'm still reeling over everything that I have encountered with this novel and honestly I am craving more and craving more answers. I totally recommend this book.

Cho ha dedicado más de 44 años a destacar la importancia del ministerio de grupos celulares. Él ha sido el fundador y presidente de numerosas organizaciones entre las que figuran el Centro de Beneficencia Social Elim (Elim Welfare Town), cuya misión es la ayudar a jóvenes, ancianos, desempleados e indigentes.
